Sometimes life with dogs just cracks me up.
And this is one of those times, thus we have designated these splendid dogs for spotlighting in our weekly feature, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap.
They were nominated by our tipster/rescuer Timi Hazle who knows them because they are the treasured friends of her sister, Elise Flanders.
Elise and hubby Cody live in Simonton, west of Houston, near Katy. And they have a houseful of dogs.
You’ll notice that the big dog’s accessories are tiny dogs. Or maybe the tiny dogs’ accessory is a big dog.
That poodle on the back of the couch is Ziva (“like the Massad agent on NCIS.”)
The little dog who thinks a big dog is a great mattress is Pebbles, who weighs in at about 4 pounds and the big dog is Reno, a puppy at 115 pounds.
Reno is a Boerboel Mastiff –not that you could tell from these photos, but some refer to the South African Boerboel as “King of the Guard Dogs.”
And, Elise says, “Reno has grown up with toy poodles so he is very gentle with the little ones.”
One of those little ones is – get ready to snicker – Thor. Timi can explain that. She writes, “I think that Elise and her husband thought that a little bitty boy poodle needed a big strong name, thus Thor. Reno was named after the sculptor, Jim Reno, who was a great friend to Elise and her husband ... They now have 4 Boerboels and 3 toy poodles. Pebbles has become a mascot at her own mother's grooming shop in Fulshear, Texas.”
It looks like Pebbles has an idea of how to properly use a Boerboel as a sleeping aid. She sort of starts in a crisp top-of-the-back balance, then melts down into the comfort of Reno’s big ol’ soft shoulder. And Reno’s face – isn’t that a great ol’ mug on the boy?
And, as you can see, they all have a handle on the rules of unagitated sleep: Find a comfy place and sack out. Could be the back of a couch, could be the couch, could be the back of a dog on the couch.
Big dog, little dog, they all have to get their Zzzzzzz.
(To nominate a sleeper, napper, snoozer or dozer for spotlighting in Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap, send photos and info to dallrp@aol.com. We’re proud to publish these amusing pictures and, as insomniacs, we are envious of the ability to sleep. We would dream of sleeping if only we could sleep and dream.)
A NOTE ABOUT MARS: Big weekend for MARS – it’s “Home For The Holidays” time.
MARS is Grapevine-based Mobile Animal Rescue Service and it’s a group that works to find homes for animals such as this pup, Annie. MARS Rescue will be in Keller on Sunday for “our first adoption event that we are coordinating,” says MARS Rescue Director Nancy Snyder.
The event – from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with more than 20 rescue and welfare groups, demonstrations, food, a raffle and a bounce house (sorry, big fella, it’s for the kids) -- will be at Creekside Pet Care, 8820 Davis Boulevard, in Keller (though websites show that it is in both Keller and North Richland Hills – perhaps a gerrymandered pet facility).
