EDITION OF THURSDAY, FEB. 16, 2017 (PetPowell Press) -- Quick! Name your favorite poem! OK, that’s enough of that. No time for romance. Here’s our critter report with Contemplations and a grouch note. Grouch? Yes.
OK, no Cocker won. No Boxer won. But the showbiz ultra-coiffed Poodle and the mop-like Peke made it into the finals. Wouldn’t you like to see that Peke wearing a summer-in-Texas haircut? Probably a great rompin’ dog without that grooming. So, yes, Rumor the female German Shepherd won the big trophy. We decided to check with Dallas Animal Services to see if there might be a Rumor look-alike available in the cages.
The closest one on the DAS website is Lennox (A0979453), a German Shepherd Mix.
We then spotted, on the website, a cliche. Look at this Chihuahua (A0979785). Name? Spot. Honest. See Spot run -- well, not in that photo of course, but if you adopt him, he’ll probably run with you.
The DAS phone number is 214-671-0249. And the shelter is at I-30 and Westmoreland and you can email email@example.com.
Just as we marvel at seeing an Earhound named “Spot,” we marvel at this cat (A0893711). He is known as Jersey. Not kidding. Jersey the Cat. Don’t know if that’s where he came from or where he’s going. Hope he goes to a good home wherever it is.
CUE THE SOUNDBITE FROM AMY POSKEY:
There you go. Yep, our reliable tipster who monitors Denton’s McNatt Animal Shelter is celebrating. WOOOHOOOOOOO!!! I get enough “O’s” in there?
Remember yesterday’s report from Amy about the terrier mom and her pups?
Here’s what happened. Amy wrote, “Molly Peterson with Legacy Humane Society is on the way to the shelter to pull this little family! WOOOOHOOOOOOO!!! THANK YOU, MOLLY!!! If anyone would like to make a donation for their care, please click on the link . That’s Mom in the photo. Scroll down to Tuesday’s edition to see the Bookmark of Puppies.
GETTING READY FOR THE FUNDRAISER
This Flying Pets Fundraiser has been presented for so long that I think it’s safe to call it a genuine, bona fide tradition of the Society for Companion Animals. That’s the organization Tawana Couch founded to get unwanted dogs out of Dallas and North Texas to rescue groups in a less threatening environment. Right now Tawana and the organizers are looking for auction items. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a donation.
CONTEMPLATION: We’re starting this contemplation with Karen Lee, the noted animal advocate from Barkleyworld.com. She’s been helping a college student in East Texas arrange help for a little dog with an awful eye. You don’t want to see the photo. The dog’s in the care of Carthage Veterinary Hospital at 903-693-2877. You can also donate through Karen’s barkleyworld.com, she writes and “then I will donate directly to the vet and send you a tax receipt and a big thank you.” The vet asked for a $500 down payment on the surgery. Karen's note reads, “We are very close to having that amount, so I told her to book it! Let’s get this done.” That’s the attitude all the great animal advocates have: “LET’S GET THIS DONE.” ... There was a note on the DAS Facebook page Wednesday noting, “We are pleased to release our January monthly statistics, showing continued improvement in several areas. These improvements are a result of the hard work of DAS staff and the collaboration of volunteers, rescues and the animal community in Dallas. #TransparentDAS .” The full DAS stat report is HERE. You’ll note that here are two opportunities to adopt Dallas animals -- one cheap and the other free. It was only a handful of years ago that the city’s management didn’t allow “special adoption fees.” If memory services, the interim shelter manager, now Deputy Dallas Police Chief Scott Walton, pulled that off. Lord knows how many animals he has saved with that one smart move. ... Please,
don’t put a face with this note. According to Holiday Insights, February 17 is “Do a Grouch a Favor Day.” The website says, “Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this day.” Probably some old grouch. So, here’s a song that, if you’re grouch, will help you get over it.
