EDITION OF THURSDAY, MARCH 2, 2017 (PetPowellPress) Assorted calendars point out that March 2 is National Banana Cream Pie Day and National Read Across America, or Dr. Seuss Day. So, two national days we can endorse. Sample some pie and think of, Oh, The Places You’ll Go for a good serving of banana cream pie. Now, let’s talk animals. Oh, and we’ll get to that SPCA photo of the dog being rescued in a moment. You’ll see how our first item about Texas law ties into the second item about animal rescue.
LAWYERS, CIVILIANS STUDYING LAW
FOR THE BENEFIT OF TEXAS ANIMALS
The great animal issues attorney Randy Turner of Fort Worth sent us a note about the 2017 Animal Law Institute on April 7 in Austin. He says it’s organized by the Animal Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and “is open to animal rescuers, veterinarians, animal control officers, lawyers and anyone else who is interested in laws pertaining to animals.
The many, many topics will interest rescuers and observers of the human and animal condition.
Among the sessions is the opener: “The Link Between Animal Cruelty and Domestic Violence."
Randy will teach a session titled, “Service, Assistance and Emotional Support Animals.” [LARRY ASIDE: Lord, aren’t they all in one of those categories!]
One of the other locally-interesting topics is this: “The Evolution of Animal Cruelty Prosecution in Houston and Dallas.”
To see the agenda and how to register to attend, to go the ANIMAL LAW SECTION SITE.
FYI, the mission of the Animal Law Section is this: “Promoting the study and understanding of laws, regulations and court decisions dealing with legal issues involving animals.Promoting the study and understanding of laws, regulations and court decisions dealing with legal issues involving animals.”
ANIMALS INVOLVED WITH THE LAW
They haven’t done anything wrong, but, goodness, gracious, look at the record in this case.
On Wednesday at Caddo Mills in Hunt County, the SPCA of Texas, working with Hunt County Pct 1 Constable Terry Jones, seized nine cats, five dogs, three kittens and one pig. They’re all at the SPCA Perry Facility in McKinney being properly tended to for the first time in forever, maybe.
Here’s that record, according to the SPCA news release: “This is the third time animals have been seized from this person, the first time having been September 26, 2012, when the SPCA of Texas seized 48 animals--25 dogs, 14 rabbits, six cats and three pigs--all living in one house at the time. The SPCA of Texas was subsequently granted custody of those animals by a judge. After that case, the animal owner was charged with a Class A Misdemeanor for animal cruelty and found guilty, serving several months in jail. The second time animals were seized from this person, on June 21, 2013, the SPCA of Texas removed seven animals-- five dogs and two kittens. The SPCA of Texas was granted custody of these animals as well. Charges are pending in the most recent case.”
The latest custody hearing is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, in the Precinct 1, Place 1, Justice of the Peace Court at 2801 Stuart St. in Greenville.
See more SPCA photos from the scene HERE.
The animals were all living inside the feces-filled, urine soaked house on the property, including the pig, which weighs under 50 pounds.
The SPCA of Texas received an anonymous complaint of suspected animal cruelty going on at the property and subsequently visited the property on February 27. The SPCA of Texas' Animal Cruelty Investigations Unit and the Hunt County Constable's Office visited the property, and concurred that it was in the animals' best interest to be removed due to their living conditions.
A custody hearing will be held on Wednesday, March 8 at 10 a.m. at the Justice of the Peace Pct. 1, Pl. 1 court located at 2801 Stuart St., Greenville, TX 75401, the Honorable Judge Wayne Money presiding.
THREE & MORE AT DAS
That first dog is Baby Girl (A0982457) and, according to the note we got from DAS momma/pups monitor Kimberly Jones, here’s the story: OWNER SURRENDER!!! No space at DAS. THIS GIRL HAS BEEN BRED AND BRED AND NOW THROWN AWAY. STILL SO
YOUNG!!! Very urgent.”
She’s a 2-year-old Pittie girl, at the shelter since the 23rd.
THEN THERE’S A0982390 who we’ve written about before. This girl is about 7 and has been at the shelter since the 23rd.
AND THEN THERE’S A0972779, a 3-year-old female chocolate Pittie who had pups at the shelter.
Why do they need to be out of the Dallas Animal Shelter? Because the needle is always read. Got to dallasanimalservices.org to see how to save the lives of these dogs and any other critter at the shelter. It’s at I-30 and Westmoreland and open to the public.

CONTEMPLATIONS OF THE WOOOHOOO VARIETY
This edition of Contemplations is a bit of a happy ending, which all animals deserve.
Amy Poskey, who monitors Denton’s McNatt Animal Shelter, first tipped us to this lively dog Lake. That’s the photo we used to promote her as adoptable last week.
Amy sent this note Wednesday -- you’ll notice her trademark expression!
She wrote:
‘“Oh my gosh, I am beyond happy to report that Lake has been adopted and she has finally found her ‘happily ever after’!!! Bless her heart, she was originally an owner surrender and was adopted twice and returned both times because of her separation anxiety. Well, that has all changed. Lake just needed a furry companion and a loving, understanding family who believes in her!”.
Then Amy typingly exclaimed, “WOOOOOOHHHOOOOOOOO!!!”
The people who have Lake wrote, “We adopted Lake on Monday. She is so sweet! She loves my kids and Ranger. She no longer has separation anxiety! She is doing great! She and Ranger just play and play! It was love at first sight with these two!! She likes to sleep in the bed between me and my husband ... She is perfect for our family!! And if you don't pet her when she wants it she will lick you till you do haha!! I just LOVE this dog!! And Ranger gets so jealous haha he will lay on top of her to get petted also lol. It was a perfect fit for our family!! I'm glad we chose her!”
How about a WOOOOHOOO smile for Lake.
