Because I'm on vacation, I've made special arrangements for posting things that would normally appear on Larry Powell's Pet Blog at www.dallasnews.com. Yes, I've set up a private pet blog. Oh, OK, my computerspouse Martha set it up, but it works just the same. Just pretend it's the regular pet blog, because that's what it is. Now, read on:
A REMINDER: After seeing the note about the missing dog Brodie, veteran rescuer Beverly Fyfe reminded me that people who have found or who are missing a pet can call Joe Crandford at the free Find-a-Pet service at 214-857-7066.
STRAYDOG ANGEL: This note comes from regular pet blogger Mary of Oak Cliff. She writes, "I met an angel at Straydog's adoption this past Sat. She adopted Rover who has been at Straydog since '94 or '95. I was sitting with Rover when she came up & started visiting. I was thinking that Rover was awfully tense & distant & that he probably wasn't going to get adopted. This lady was able to get past his barriers & took him home. Check out his pictures on the Sun. Straydog page (www.straydog.org)This is a totally different happy & relaxed dog that has just found his forever home."
HELPING AN OVERSEAS PUPPY: Amy Jones of Dallas writes, "I'm sure that you get a lot of emails asking for your help. I hope that this one is a little different. My brother, Tim, is an Army reservist who was called up for duty and has been in Iraq since January. Last
week, during his duty as a guard at the front of Camp Victory, he found a puppy while searching one of the trucks entering Camp Victory. The driver, when asked what he wanted to do with the puppy, said to leave him there and when he dumped the gravel that was in the back, it would just kill the puppy. Well, as you can imagine, my brother couldn't let that happen so he now has this puppy in his room.
The help that I need from you is in the form of ideas. I know that a woman in California rescued some puppies from Iraq and we want to do the same for this puppy. Do you have any contacts or ideas on how to go about this? Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated."
If you know of a way to help this puppy, either e-mail this pet blog or e-mail Amy at [email protected].
SAVED FROM THE STREET: Here's a note from Leslie Lovell about an all-too-typical Dallas situation with a dog. Leslie writes, "I know you aren't Lost and Found, BUT I thought it might not hurt to contact you. I was driving down Coit Road today [Monday], just north of Spring Valley, and saw a big black dog crossing six lanes of traffic. I pulled over was able to catch him, and I'm hoping now to catch up with his owner. He's a German Shepherd/Doberman mix, I'm guessing -- about a year old, with a red nylon collar (no tags) -- black with tan points (shiny coat) -- very friendly, quite clingy actually, and knows how to sit, shake hands, lie down, and speak! I'll watch for ads, and may place one -- I'm thinking that someone is missing their "little" friend very much!" (Contact Leslie about this dog at [email protected].)
SENIOR DOGS NEEDING HOMES: This note comes from the folks at A Different Breed. (Call 214-336-8847 or e-mail [email protected])
A woman has fallen ill and, because she is losing her home, her nine dogs -- all well-cared for, well-behaved and congenial -- need places to live. Someone who visited these dogs reports that they are all "absolutely beautiful" and that "there is absolutely no reason why any of these babies should face death!"
SPECIAL CATS: Those folks at Feral Friends are busy. Here's a note from FF's Sharon Boncek:
"Lazarus -- SPECIAL CASE! This guy was found by two elderly ladies in Carrollton. He was buried ALIVE in a cardboard box. He managed to get one paw out and that is what they saw sticking out of the ground. They took him to Noah's Ark where he was treated. He also had an abscess that has since healed. He is a tabby with white (white is stained from blood). They have him listed as 3 years old. REALLY SWEET!
"Feral Friends plans on having him for adoption the weekend of September 10, 11 and 12 for thethe Petsmart Fall Adopt-A-Thon. It is also our 'Checkerboard' weekend where we are highlighting our Black, White and Black & White cats and kittens. Our adoptions are at the Petsmart on Coit just North of Campbell in Far North Dallas. Special adoption hours for this weekend only are Friday (9/10) 4-9 p.m., Saturday (9/11) 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sunday (9/12) 9 a.m. -7 p.m."
