Anybody else think this is funny? The mailing address for the TV show "Cheaters" is on Lovers Lane.
IDLE OSCAR THOUGHTS: Glad I didn't bet on my Oscar picks. ... Glad I don't have to wear some of those dresses I saw on the broadcast. Geez, how in the world can cloth withstand that much stress? NASA making dresses? ... Chris Rock -- oops, he has become one of those people he makes fun of in his act. ... Sean Penn -- for crying out loud, get a sense of humor and stop sucking on lemons. That haircut, Sean --Y ou up for a part in a prison movie? ... Will Hillary Swank ever win an Oscar for portraying a traditional woman? Well, heck, what is a traditional woman? Glad I'm not assigned to write that script. ... Is Morgan Freeman cool or what? If there was a TV channel "Morgan Freeman Reads Recipes" I'd tune it in just to try to learn how to make the language work so beautifully. ... This is a great country where stars can gather and be honored without, as far as I know, any arrests. ... Saw the Tommy Lee Jones movie "Man of the House." It has a cameo by Texas Gov. Rick Perry. There's Oscar buzz -- yeah, and the Texas school crisis is going to be solved by magic beans and a chant.
GOOD READING: Get a copy of the magazine Urban Animal and read about the Metroplex Animal Coalition's "Have-a-Heart" campaign to fund free spaying/neutering. (Check out MAC's work at www.metroplexanimalcoalition.com.) Urban Animal also has a story about the inspiration for Dog and Kitty City's April 21 KPMG Fore the Fur Golf Classic and the focus of "Part of Our Family" is Becky Stewart who, approaching 89, looks back on a lifetime of wonderful pets. (Urban Animal subscription info is in the column to the right on this website.)
And, I'd be very remiss if I didn't suggest that you get a copy of the Feb. 17 edition of the Oak Cliff Tribune and read the wonderful (personal prejudice here) story Jo Ann Holt wrote about our efforts to help animals through www.readlarrypowell.com and Urban Animal. Jo Ann's halo has a pretty swell glow these days. And the point is, if it were not for animal lovers in the trenches around here, none of this would be possible. You people work so hard and you hearts ache so much at what you see, that it surely is deserving of recognition. The work of rescuers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area is exemplary -- probably the best in the nation because of the odds and the attitudes rescuers face.
HUNTER: Jennifer Bayer has sent photos of Hunter, her Dalmatian. As noted in earlier entries, she is trying to place this fellow in a very good home because she must be out of town tending to her ailing dad and she doesn't want Hunter to feel abandoned. To adopt Hunter or help Jennifer place him, e-mail: [email protected].
BULLDOG NEWS: DFW Bulldog Rescue's Kelly Andrus says that February has been "our busiest month in rescue to date." That, of course, means the rescue group's vet bill is gigantic. To raise money quickly, the group has scheduled a "huge garage sale" Saturday at 13525 Janwood in Farmers Branch. You can read about the medical plight of some of the rescued bulldogs at www.dfwbulldogrescue.org. If you have items to donate to the sale e-mail [email protected] or [email protected].
Last year, the rescue group placed 50 bulldogs. So far this year it has rescued 10 bulldogs -- some of which had some expensive but fixable medical problems.
None of us won the lotto over the weekend, so the garage sale will have to do the trick until those "lucky numbers" are actually lucky.
A PARKING PLACE: Linda Shearin reports that Paw Pals of Grand Prairie has scheduled a March 10 meeting to plan the group's "Spring Fling" but also to discuss introduction of the "dog park" concept into the city. Grand Prairie needs an off-leash park -- all cities do. But Paw Pals is making the effort to work with the city and establish a bona fide dog park a la Dallas' White Rock Dog Park. The meeting is at 7 p.m. March 10 at the Prairie Paws Adoption Center, 2222 W. Warrior Trail in Grand Prairie. E mail [email protected] to offer support, advice or other help in this good cause.

CAT NOTE: Coming up on March 12, a Cat Fanciers Association show at Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. And put this one on your local calendar, April 16 the North Texas Cat Club Show is at the Food & Fiber Building in Fair Park. And May 7-8, the National Maine Coon Cat Club Show is at the Resistol Rodeo Exhibition Hall in Mesquite. Our tipster on these items is Karen Crooke who has Terrificats Maine Coon Cats -- and Karen is devoted to her cats.
We have cats at our house. The put on a show daily. But a cat show is different. It's worth a visit not just to see the cats, but to see how the cats are treated -- if you want to come back as a pampered animal in your next life, pick "show cat."
REMINDER: OK, gang, time's flying. We're compiling April animal-related activities for Urban Animal so get those events/dates to me at [email protected]. Also, if you know people who, with their pets, would be perfect to profile in the "Part Of Our Family" feature in Urban Animal, please e-mail me. Thanks. Remember, listing your activity is free and pinpointing a "Part of Our Family" pet and person is a good deed for which I shall be eternally grateful. Have the pet get in touch with me -- sometimes they're more reliable than people and they often have more free time to consider serious issues of the day.
