Ah, it's good to see you in the springtime! I expect you all to blossom and profit from the season, which, I believe, is what Buck Showalter is saying to his Texas Rangers these days. Poor guy.
Please read on and know that you're appreciated not just by this website, but by the folks who advertise on it....Check out their ads on the left.
(Just fyi: Our two "first local" advertisers, Boardwalk Realty and pawgallery.com are genuine cat and dog people. When my IT Department -- my technospouse Martha -- figured out how to put ads on our site, I thought one of the first would be for a company that repairs fences so dogs won't get out....Still waiting on that one. But it's a good idea for a business, don't you think?)
Now, on with today's items:
A WACO WOLFDOG: The big flap in Waco animal circles is the fate of a wolf hybrid currently held in the Waco Humane Society Animal Shelter. Joelle Sambola, an animal fan, has been working to save the wolfdog from being killed. Joelle says the shelter manager has said the hybrid could be released only to someone with a license or a permit for raising and keeping such animals.
Frankly, if they start euthanizing mammals because of their family tree, some of us will be in dire straits, won't we?
Naturally, there's some jockeying of personalities and positions that occurs when these crises arise.
Joelle is calling the animal "Wind," but the shelter has merely given her a number. She is very loveable, Joelle says. "She was someone's pet who decided they were tired of going to get her when she escaped. She needs hands-on with humans."
Animal Angels of Jacksboro has offered to take the wolfdog, according to Angels President Carole Sanders. (Go to www.anmlangls.org.)

So, the ball is kind of in Waco Humane Society's court. Be nice if they played it properly in a noble and most advantageous manner, public relations-wise.
The Waco Humane Society address is 2032 Circle Road, Waco, 76706. Phone 254-754-1469. Fax 254-754-1469. E-mail [email protected].
Look, I don't know if this is a real wolf hybrid or just a dog that looks like a wolf. We're too short of funds at my house to do any volunteer DNA testing, but, from my perch in Dallas, it seems like it's probably just too precious an animal to be killed. Of course, I feel that way about all of them no matter the breed or species. The rule is "Be kind to animals," not "Be kind to animals with the following exceptions...."
HELPING THE ANTI-CRUELTY LAW: Looks like attempts to put more muscle in the Texas Loco Law against animal cruelty are facing a stall-out in committee. For updates and for ways to help go to the Texas Humane Legislation Network website at www.thln.com. Time is getting as short as a dachshund's legs Texas needs to toughen its cruelty laws -- if you don't think so, hang out with a rescue group or animal services officer for a while. It's ugly out there.
SHEPHERD NEEDS A HOME: Animal rescuer Christie Hansen reports that a friend has asked "if I could help her find a home for her sister-in-law's 6-year-old male, neutered German Shepherd. They have two 2-year-old girls and the dog is 'too rambunctious.' They want to get rid of him quick. He stays locked in a kennel all day because they don't want to leave him in the yard while they are not home."
This dog is up-to-date on all shots and health checks. (To help Christie find a good home for a good dog, e-mail [email protected].)
As Christie says about a dog being rambunctious after spending the day in a kennel, "Don't even get me started." We all know there's a right way and a wrong way to be a friend to a dog. It is up to responsible animal fans to get this dog to safe harbor. Christie is taking steps. Anybody who can help her, step up, please.
