Hello, and welcome to today's petpourri. Let's dive in. We've got a TV special on dog dealers and, on the other end of the spectrum, photographers at HealeyGrisham working on the Dallas Animal Services Spay and Neuter Campaign.
But first, here's is a note about a missing dog:
WHERE'S THIS DOG? "The dog is named Oz or Ozzie," says Katherine Veno, who sent out word that he's missing or stolen to folks all over including the Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake. And that's appropriate because the dog is missing from a home in the Arnold Hills are of Seven Point, Texas, on Cedar Creek Lake.
If you've seen this dog, call Katherine at 903-887-1510. She's handling communications on behalf of the friend to whom Oz belongs.
Oz is a 5-year-old Australian shepherd. "I sure wish I could find him," says Katherine. "He is very well trained and is a working cow/horse dog who is used to working every day -- and does not wander, which leads me to believe he may have been stolen, but I don't really know."
HOW ABOUT THIS MUG? If I correctly understand all the e-mails I was forwarded, Kim Tharpe was working on getting a Mastiff mix out of Bedford Animal Control when Carter the Cat crossed the Rescue Radar.
Kim's email read, "His name is Carter, but he looks to me like a Groucho Marx impersonator. Look at those eyebrows! the only thing he's missing is the moustache!"
Indeed, if not the legendary Groucho, just having the eyebrows makes him look more like current screen star Eugene Levy.
So, if you want to adopt domestic shorthair male No. 60137 from Bedford Animal Control, he's available during regular hours, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Contacted Bedford Animal Control & Shelter at 1809 Reliance Parkway, Bedford 76021. (Call 817-952-2191. Click here. )
It always amazes me how many beautiful and distinct animals -- dogs, cats and otherwise -- wind up in animal shelters with the clock ticking on their lives. Humans have failed them every step of the way.
By the time they get to a city shelter, well, geez, what tremendous odds....reminds me of a quote -- and it may be from Groucho (I just can't recall and my search engine can't find it) but it goes something like, "If man is dog's best friend, the dog is in trouble."
A GREAT POSTER: HealeyGrisham, the photography pholks, er, folks, and Dallas Animals Services have teamed up to promote the city's spay/neuter campaign in 2006, reports a news release from the commercial photo studio.
This is one of the posters that will be on display in GIANT SIZE on the side of the 100-year-old Bluitt Building, where HealeyGrisham offices. The building is at Commerce and Pearl. (Read about it and the photo studio by clicking here.) And, inside the building on the first floor you can see a gallery of animal photos.
As regular visitors to readlarrypowell.com know, we endorse animals, pictures of animals and spay/neuter campaigns, particularly in the extremely fertile City of Dallas. We all know the sad numbers of fatalities down at the city shelter. So, any help in a positive direction is an excellent move.
Here's the official quote from Janet Healey, a partner in HealeyGrisham: "We're animal lovers, and it just breaks my heart that there are so many unwanted animals in our city. Joe and I simply want to do something to help, something to make a difference. Donating some of our pet images, and production costs to promote the campaign on the side of our building, was a perfect opportunity for us to support this awesome spay and neuter campaign. We get lots of commuters that pass by on a daily basis, so we hope to reach a broad demographical audience, one that will potentially view the message on an almost daily basis to or from work."
Next, we ought to figure out how to rent the Goodyear or Fuji blimp, wrap it in these posters, and fly it over the more "active" areas of the city. Maybe we ought to talk DART into wrapping some buses with these posters.
TV NOTE: Several readers are also Cable TV viewers and they've reminded us that the HBO documentary "Dealing Dogs" will debut at 9 tonight on HBO . The film focuses on a notorious Class B dog dealer in Arkansas who was selling dogs to research labs.
The word "creep" doesn't quite fit the guy, but it's about the best I can use on this family-oriented web site.
EVENTS? EVENTS? Remember, award-winning Urban Animal magazine is collecting notices of events for the months of April and May for listing in the next edition. Please send your information with a contact name/number/e-mail to [email protected]. It’s a free listing. Don’t hesitate.
Outside of this free listing, about the only other free things an animal rescuer runs into are free cats and dogs. And if you’re a rescuer, there’s a load of free humor in that last sentence.
