OK, just as I was thinking about taking a nap, I looked in on my in-box and found several things that need an extra bit of publicity before we work on this weekend's Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap. Here goes:
FROM COMPANION ANIMAL NETWORK: Oh, good grief, the stories never end.
See this little border collie pup?
Gail Whelan of Companion Animal Network says the people who have her have made one of those traditional threats: "Take this dog or we're taking it to the shelter." So, she's making every effort to find a place for this 10-week-old dog.
He was found trotting alongside a highway. But the people who found him already have 4 other dogs and can't make room.
Ten weeks old and already threatened. Life shouldn't be that way.
Then, you may notice the photo of the box of puppies. Gail also tipped us to the folks trying to help this family of dogs -- and their mother.
Here's the story from rescuer Carol Ware's Feb. 16 report (it's being circulated to rescue folks): "I picked up (from the side of a country road) a beautiful but starved pit bull today. Need to find a forever home or foster home asap. She's had pups recently and she's huge under there. I suspect she might have been a breeder and was dumped after her usefulness was done -- she has a really long scar along her mid-section. Very sweet and gets along with my dogs
> and even my cats. She is terribly under-nourished, ribs and backbone showing. I call her Honey, for her beautiful color, eyes, and sweet personality.
"She's been thru enough. Need to find this girl a loving home (no cages!)."
Then, there was this report yesterday: "We took Honey back to where we found her and she led us right to her pups. All 10 of them! They were hungry but healthy under an abandoned house.
"I have them in a back bathroom and they are eating puppy chow and rice. Sweetest pups ever! Now the question, where can we take them? Which shelters will take them? I have read so much about them being automatically killed in shelters, I'm scared to take them anywhere."
And there you have it folks, the big question: Who will help these dogs?
If you can help the border collie, call Gail of Companion Animal Network at 214-808-3238 or 214-969-4831 ASAP.

MEANWHILE IN THE COLONY: These two rascals are Riff and Raff, we hear from Patricia Barrington, the manager of The Colony's Animal Control Division.
The 8- to 10-week old pups are "funny, fuzzy, fabullous," she says. "They look like they are long-ahired Chihuahua, possibly Sheltie mixes. Riff and Raff were running amok in a neighborhood, begging food from folks and living on their own for about three weeks until somone rounded them up and brought them to us before the cold snap.
"Both of these sweet boys are just as cuddly as can be. They will likely be less than 20 pouns when they are grown, so they will make excellent apartment companions."
To ask about Riff and Raff, e-mail [email protected] or call 972-370-9250.
ONE MORE NOTE: These aren't all the animals in crises in shelters or awaiting homes in the care of rescue groups or wandering the streets. Keep your eyes open. Keep your hearts open, too.
