This triumphantly entertaining entry in our weekend feature Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap manages to show some genuine canine "Pairs Sleeping," as they say in the Olympics, and some sincere feline team snoozing.
These dogs and cats are the devoted sleepers and nappers in Sandi and Scott Burnside's family.
The white Great Dane is Dharma and the black Great Dane is Logan who, Sandi says, has a "good 25 pounds on Dharma but they snuggle together all the time."
Even in the back seat of a motor vehicle, apparently.
Sandi tells about the Burnside Bunch:
"Dharma will be three in March (we gave her St Patty's Day as a birthday). She's about 98 pounds and deaf and was adopted from Great Dane Rescue of North Texas in November 2005. Logan is about 2 1/2 - his birthday is around August (?). He's about 125 pounds and was adopted through Great Dane Angel Network in February 2006.
"He was supposed to be a foster -- but I fell for him when he sat in my lap and he never left!
"They're inseparable now - constantly wrestling around the house. We often find our couch in the dining room or turned over from the tugging matches (wood floors!), or find them snuggling on the bed. They are a joy to have and we can't imagine life without them!"
The family recently left Fort Worth to move to Florida to the Tampa area. They'd arrived in Fort Worth "via West Virginia and Maryland," Sandi says.
"I owned a dog daycare for two years -- one of my first clients was a Great Dane puppy. I instantly fell in love with the breed -- the characteristics, their mannerisms, their size. What's not to love, right?
"As you can imagine, I took care of just about every breed imaginable, and not one of them touched my heart the way the Danes did. We saw Dharma at Barktoberfest [at Fort Worth's Fort Woof dog park] in October 2005 and my heart was stolen. I filled out the adoption papers as soon as we got home (ironically, she also sat in my lap - right in the middle of Fort Woof)."
Sandi sent several photos and explained, "I think I have the most photogenic and beautiful pups in the world, but didn't want to overwhelm you with too many!"
While searching for photos of the dogs napping, she says, "I also found a cute pic of my kitties napping" and she sent it "in case you're short on kitty pictures."
"Cleo is the white one. She'll be 9 in September. Charlie is the gray; he'll be 7 in April. Daisy, the orange, will be 7 in July. They're all rescue/shelter babies from West Virginia (We got them when we were in college at WVU).
"We've had Cleo since she was 1 1/2, and Charlie and Daisy since they were 5 and 6 weeks old.
"The funny thing about the picture is, we had just gotten Charlie and Daisy -- Cleo wasn't too sure that she liked having these silly kittens around, but was already napping when they came up and curled up with her to nap, so she just let them stay. To this day, this is still my screensaver!
"Yes, the cats all get along with the dogs. Charlie in particular thinks he IS a dog - he naps with them, winds in and out of their legs, etc."
