Here we go with our Friday collection on a day when understanding the world is just so much of a challenge that we might as well go ahead and start the weekend.
SUNSHINE IN A SITUATION: Well, here’s an interesting tale. This dog is Sunshine and she’s in the Dallas Animal Services shelter – and she’s pregnant.
DAS has been trying to find someone to take her and her expectancy but so far no dice.
In fact, last night we got a note from Paws In the City’s Becky Haisma who is desperately trying to help Sunshine. Becky explains that while Sunshine will be placed into the adoption cycle after her pups are born, most likely “they cannot keep her babies at DAS so they will have to euthanize them. “ Paws has, this week, taken in a couple of injured DAS dogs and is way full – needs foster volunteers, in fact.
A note from DAS’s Mark Cooper reads, “I have posted this momma to almost every contact I can think of with no luck.
As you can see, Sunshine is a lady with a couple of looks – ears up and ears down. And in that “down” photo you can see she’s packed on some mommy pounds around the middle.
To ask about helping this dog and her litter, e-mail [email protected] or call 214-670-8298.
IS SPAY AND NEUTER A FICTION? Well, goodness, all of these extra puppies and kittens must come from somewhere and I think the origin is idiots who don’t comprehend the concept of the birds and bees.
Well, all that aside, we got a note from Carolyn Perkins, director of the LuvaPet adoption center at the PetsMart at Forest and Inwood for the Humane Society of Dallas – that’s the Dog ‘n’ Kitty City folks.
She says that “the shelter currently has 100 kittens at various locations.” They’ve been rescued during this “kitten season.” She says the LuvaPet facility has 17 kittens “in all shapes and sizes” that are ready for adoptions. And she suggests people could stop by “either to adopt or just to be entertained by watching the antic – it truly is ‘Kittens Gone Wild.’ “
And, Carolyn writes, “Please continue to remind and encourage people to spay and neuter their animals – we are getting kittens left at the shelter, rescued from being drowned and other sat situations.”
You can see the kittens by going to the Dog ‘n’ Kitty site HERE. Among them is this little sprite, Joey, who, no doubt, will grow up to be an affectionate but zany cat.
MOVIE TICKETS: The SPCA of Texas Pet Flix Film Festival tickets are on sale now -- $15 for an evening of animal-related videos. (Click HERE.) The Festival is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 6 at Studio Movie Grill, Royal Lane at Central Expressway. There’ll be short films, longer films, documentaries, music videos, etc. Emcee for the evening is Rick O'Bryan of Radio Sponsor Mix 102.9.
The official name of the event is “The VCA Animal Hospital Companies’ Pet Flix Film Festival 2010 presented by Hill’s Science Diet benefitting the SPCA of Texas.” And, of course, there will be a film of a budgie that’s been taught to announce the title. I’m kidding – I think the budgie just tap dances.
The Best Overall Picture wins $1,500, Best Short Tail and Best Long Tail winners get $250.
It’s a fun evening at the theater and my moviefunspouse Martha and I will be among the judges. Trust me, there’s pressure – the films are often touching, funny and, sometimes, even adventurous. It may not be Cannes, but, then, you don’t have to worry about flying home through volcanic ash.
THE COLONY BASSET BOO: Earlier in the week we told you about this dog, Boo, a shy Basset who was beginning to warm up to folks at The Colony Animal Control shelter.
This morning we got a note from reliable Collin County tipster DeDe Whitcomb who usually is busy rescuing animals from the Collin County Animal Services Shelter and working on behalf of the Collin County Humane Society. She says that “those pictures of dogs so scared they face the wall get me every time. So, on my day off I went to go get Boo.
“She is scared no more and holding down the couch at my house! She also sleeps with me every night. The Chihuahuas said it was OK.”
So, Boo is safe and has a home and even a Facebook album that you can see HERE.
Patricia Barrington, The Colony’s Animal Control Division Manager, tells us this morning that Lola, the Basset mix who came in with Boo, still needs a home – and so do a bunch of adult cats currently cages at The Colony. No cage is ever empty for long.
To ask about Lola, e-mail [email protected] or call 972-370-9250. Same thing for the cats. And you can see them by clicking HERE.
FOR PRAYERS AND PASSAGES: We got a note this morning from Bonnie Lovell, our longtime friend and former colleague at the big paper in Dallas. She reports that her beloved vet in Denton, Dr. Nub Neighbors, has passed away. We’ve got the tribute on today’s Prayers & Passages page – click on the “button” in the upper right side of this page.
BULLET-DODGING BOOMERANG NEEDS A PLACE: Sharon Coker sent us a note about finding a home for this guy Boomerang who goes by the shorter moniker “Boomer” most of the time. He’s a “wander up.”
He’s been to the vet and been checked out, treated for minor parasite problems, had all his shots and, of course, been neutered.
Sharon reports that shortly after Boomer was fixed he decided to go on an unauthorized jaunt through the neighborhood and it almost ended in tragedy because one of the lovely neighbors took a shot at him. That scared him and he bolted and a week later he was back in the safety of his own crate.
To ask about Boomer, call 903-872-2556 or 902 654 2472.
THE PRESSURE ON LELA: The Companion Animal Network took in a couple of dogs that had been together – Romeo, a Schnauzer who has kidney stones and is now in a foster home awaiting medial work, and Lel, a Schnauzer-Bichon mix. Lela is 2 years old and healthy and will be spayed before she’s adopted. But for now she needs a foster home – the challenge is, CAN’s Gail Whelan says, “losing the only home she ever knew has been very hard for her.”
To offer to foster (or to adopt) this dog Lela, e-mail [email protected] or call 214-969-4831 or 24-200-6236.
CATS, CATS, CATS: When last week spoke to Steffenie Vela, the Euless Trinity High School GAP Club sponsor, she was wishing there was some way to promote cat adoptions at the Euless Animal Shelter, which the GAPsters have adopted.
We’ll give it a shot: There are a bunch of cats currently available at the Euless shelter (this note comes from fellow GAP sponsor Stephanie Cronk) and among them is Sheeba (#012125), described as a “female Egyptian Mau blend.” She’s blessed with “the most amazing spots and stripes and her fur is just like silk.”
And as you can see in this photo, Sheeba has an exploratory nature. She’s said to be “an entertainer.”
To ask about adopting Sheeba or any animal in the Euless shelter, call 817-685-1594 or drop by the shelter at 1517 Westpark Way. You can see more Euless animals HERE. http://www.AdoptaPet.com/shelter76069-pets.html
Remember, if you adopt an animal that sponsored by the GAP students, you get a price break on the adoption.
DUNCAN IS DUE IN TOWN: We’ve gotten a tip that Duncan, the Irish Wolfhound in the care of Straydog Inc., will be at Canine Commissary in Dallas from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. You can see Duncan’s photos by gong to www.straydog.org. And, you may recall that Duncan was our official Straydog Sweetheart a couple of Valentine’s ago and helped raise a bunch of money for the Straydog sanctuary near Gun Barrel City.
A CALENDAR CAMPAIGN: Holy smoke, is it already time for 2011? Yep. The DFW Cocker Spaniel Rescue folks are putting the “final three month pages of the 2011 DFWCSR Calendar up for bid starting Monday.” You can bid on October, November and October in an attempt to secure a spot for your beloved Cocker on the rescue group’s fundraising calendar. And, if you just want to support the calendar, you can buy an ad or a special message for 50 bucks. You can see how to buy the ad at the rescue’s site HERE.
POOCHES ON THE PARKWAY: We got a reminder from Jaime Hopkins of the Village on the Parkway shopping center (Dallas North Tollway at Beltline) that the Pooches on the Parkway adoption event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on the northern parking lot. The Village’s “Yappy Hour” is scheduled for Wednesday the 26th.
WAGS & WAVES SCHEDULED: The Metroplex Animal Coalition’s Second Annual Wags & Waves Festival is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 18 – this far enough in advance to pencil in on your calendars? Hawaiian Falls, near Firewheel, in Garland will host. To see the Facebook link click HERE.
CONTEMPLATIONS: About people who work with animal rescue, I don’t know how so many people can keep working for the same thing without a huge profit motive. Saving animals from human folly just doesn’t pay like being a hired killer or a usurious mortgage banker or an executive at British Petroleum. If these attempts to make life better for animals were any other endeavor – supporting a football team, backing a political candidate, buying the latest computer/telephone/TV gadget –- society would regard it as a “major movement of social change.” ... Scientist announce that they’ve created artificial life. I guess this is after having given up the search for intelligent life. ... Has there ever been a handier gadget than a back-scratcher? No known connection to the preceding item.
