This is a tough weekend for some people.
They are twisted up in knots over their taxes – due Monday, you know.
This weekend we present what we are interpreting as a promise that there will be opportunities for relaxation ahead.
The spotlight of Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap falls on the sleeping form of a fellow named Lac.
And, look, let’s be honest about the world. If these Pits knew what they were up against, I’m not so sure they’d be able to sleep. They’d be twisted up like taxpayers, fretting that one misinterpretation could lead to severe punishment. But this guy can sleep and, of course, some people forget that Pits, in spite of the breed’s reputation, are dogs and, as such, they naturally know how to sleep. It is the Way of the Dog.
Lac was nominated for the spotlight by someone whose mind he changed and whose heart he captured, Tomi Jasso, one of our reliable rescuers and tipsters.
She wrote, “I just wanted to share this picture with you.”
Now, after many years of getting photos and e-mails from folks I know that the way that sentence should be interpreted is “I just wanted to brag on my beloved friend.”
And why is this dog named Lac? Tomi says credit goes to her husband, Frank Ortiz. “When we came across Lac, my husband owned a Silver Cadillac and that’s how he got his name.” (Aside from Larry: You wouldn’t want to name a dog “Cad,” would you?)
And that photo of the two dogs? That’s Lac with, as Tomi writes, “Angel – don’t let the name fool you.”
Here’s the story of Lac from Tomi:
“He is a full-blooded red nose pit who surely would’ve died if he had not come into our lives.
“To tell you the truth, before I was blessed with him, I had been terrified of pit bulls! I had heard so many bad things from the media that I would make sure to steer clear of all pit bulls.
“But now my opinion has been changed forever! He is the sweetest and most loving dog in the world!
“When he came into our lives he was 2 weeks old and a man was giving him away because the momma had tried to kill her puppies. I couldn’t turn my back on him so I took him home despite my fear of pits. It was the best decision I could’ve made!
“He was so sick at first (worms, mange, allergies) but after all the vet visits, as you can see in the picture, he has become a big healthy boy. Now, if only my other dog Angel, a small Pomeranian would just let him sleep longer -- life would be perfect for him.”
(To nominate your slumbering Pit, snoozing Ocicat, dozing Dalmatian or snoring Yak (isn’t that a thought!), send the photo and info to [email protected]. And for you people who say, “Yeah, Pits are nice when they’re asleep,” the same thing can be said of some Dachshunds, Cockers, Chihuahuas, Congressmen and Preachers. And insomniacal writers, the snarling sleepless jackals of the keyboard jungle.)
