Enjoying the roller coaster. are you?
We go from (1) being amused at the royal wedding hats to (2) being stunned by the wintry weather on May 1 in Texas (hot enough to burn last week, soaking in the 30s and 40s this week), then (3) being astonished at the Sunday night news regarding the fate of Osama Bin Laden -- the world is different today.
You need time to process all that. We should all take the day off and think. In the meantime, thunderstorms are all over the area and they’re disrupting the schedules of carefully regulated dogs.
That photo? That is our staff impersonator Inky The Cocker Laureate of Texas – I’m kidding. That is Sarah Ferguson’s daughter Beatrice in the oddest hat we’ve since the one Donald Trump wears.
DENTON CATS: You may have awakened to loud thunderstorms dropping a deluge of water in your neighborhood, but, we got a note from an animal fan that reads, “It is literally raining kitteies at the [Denton Animal] shelter and all are so urgent.”
I was almost sure that was “figuratively raining” kittens until I started looking at all the photos from the Denton shelter, including this one with a momma and some kittens.
Monday is euthanasia day for some of the cats in the Denton shelter, Maybe there’s nothing that can be done. In case there is and you have a safe haven to offer adult and baby cats, email [email protected] or text or call 940-391-7760.
IN COLLIN COUNTY: This is the note that came from DeDe Whitcombe, the shelter walker and volunteer at Collin County Animal Shelter in McKinney which, she says, “is full.
“I was given a list of 28 dogs to get out of the shelter this Saturday and have only moved one of them. I have been posting and posting, now I am on my knees ---please help us! There will be euths [Monday], as there are no kennels open.”
There are purebreds, mixes, Earhounds (such as the one in this photo) and “shelter favorites” such as the dog on the right. That dog is heartworm negative, healthy and blind in one eye. And at peril.
To contact the shetler, call 972-547-7298 or e-mail [email protected].
IN CARROLLTON: The folks with the Carrollton Animal Shelter report that there were some adoptions over the weekend and one dog from alst week’s list of “death row animals” is still looking for a rescue. Twiggy, one of the cats on last week’s list remains available for adoption but Princess, this black and white cat, was “involved in an incident” with a staffer and her behavior got her moved to the “rescue only” list.”
The story on Sam is that he’s a Pit Bull and he was an owner surrender, but it’s not quite that simple. According to the shelter, “This poor fellow was released to another local city shelter by his first people, adopted to a new family then after we picked him running as a stray the second family decided they no longer wanted him. He is a great dog, very friendly, house-trained, will sit on command and loves to play fetch. Sam is well behaved on a leash and so far has yet to meet a person he doesn’t like. He is neutered already and has a current rabies vaccination, too. In September when he was neutered, he tested positive for heartworms, and there is no record of him being treated, so he will need to be tested again and treated if necessary.”
To ask about any of the Carrollton animals, call 972-466-3420, or email us at [email protected].
A FOUND HUSKY: Wandering dogs aren’t all that unusual in bad weather, but it is still startling to find a really great-looking purebred roaming. Our pal Della Wallace reports that this Husky was “found in the Little Elm/Oak Point area of Denton County.”
He’s not neutered and didn’t have a collar or chip. Della checked the Denton shelter for a missing dog report and he’s not listed.
If you know this dog or know where he belongs, e-mail [email protected] or call 972-294-7415. And, Della says she’d take him but the Wallace home is already full of critters.
MONEY FOR PAWS IN THE CITY: Here’s an easy way to help support Paws In The City’s rescue efforts, thanks to the folks with the Katydid Collection.
Click on the Katydid Facebook page HERE and for each person who “likes” it, Katydid will donate a dollar to Paws In The City.
Paws In The City President Becky Haisma says that a similar campaign by Katydid’s owner/designer Katy Messersmith last year raised $3,500 for the rescue group.
SAM’S WAITING: Our longtime Corsicana tipster Julie Maupin sent us a note over the weekend about this girl Sam. During the weekend’s Derrick Days celebration in Corsicana, the shelter staff managed to adopt out 35 animals on Saturday. Nope, not Sam.
Julie sent a personal message of endorsement for this dog. “Liz Kadin had Sam on a leash all day [Saturday]. Kids encircled her all day. Activity was frenetic; there was lots of noise - and nothing bothered her. She is such a good girl. We think her coat may have scared folks off - but Liz worked on all the loose hair, Marcia used a Furminator brush on her and she looks so pretty. This dog is so gentle and sweet and has such fine qualities.
“She is definitely smart! Kristen told me... the reason she and Liz kept Sam on a leash all day is because Sam figured out in a hurry how to lift the latch on the cyclone fence gate on her pen!
“Her cage card says that Sam was returned because she was digging out of the yard but we all know that an owner's loving attention and some good exercise would probably cure that problem. Sam is ready to go! She is already spayed.”
Now, there is a HUGE adoption fee for Sam. Staggeringly huge. TWENTY-FIVE LOUSY DOLLARS. That’s right, just $25.
Call the shelter at 903-654-4928 or visit it at 617 S 12th St Corsicana, TX 75110.
CONTEMPLATIONS: About those Royal Wedding hats – amazing, isn’t it, how people of breeding still take bad advice. ... True or false: Donald Trump has no sense of humor. ... Be nice if, to celebrate the triumph over terrorism, gas stations would drop the price of a gallon a dime. That’ll happen the day everybody believes the Presidential Birth Certificate is real.
