I would have welcomed you to the first day of spring yesterday but I was busy looking for my winter coat.
OK, let’s move along:
MORE PHOTOS OF THE POLICE DOG: We told the story yesterday of “7” or “Taz” or “Lopy” as this dog is known. He’s the one who has been living under the watchful eyes of the officers at the South Central Dallas Police Station.
At Dallas Animal Services he’s known formally as A774876 in DLF 33.
These photos were snapped by Animal Control Officer Mindy Sewell.
The report from the shelter is that 7 is “fearful in the kennels and will need some
work with socializing.”
Efforts are being made to do that. And his upper respiratory infection is being treated.
But he still needs a home or a rescue group. Email [email protected] to offer to help this dog. He has fans.
And, you know, this is probably the longest time this dog has been under a roof in his entire life. He spent most of it lounging on police grounds and avoiding apprehension.
ASSORTED NOTES: That elusive Lab girl with the white patch on her chest may not be catchable, but she has drawn $400 in pledges to the rescue that will take her in once she’s off the streets. She’s wandering in the area of Central Expressway and Ross Avenue and more elusive than a rhyme for “orange.” [email protected] ...And in the category of a picture being worth a thousand words, we got this forwarded from Cheryl Lang via noted animal advocate Liz Marshall.
Cheryl is president of No Paws Left Behind in Houston.
And when the house in Rusk was foreclosed upon, the good souls who had the house left the dog in a cage -- without food or water, Cheryl’s note says. “This poor guy was left to die in a cage without any access to food or water. We are now providing on a daily basis.” The dog needs a safe place to go and No Paws Left Behind can use some help with feeding, food, etc. Email [email protected] or call 281-994-4546.
TRAILER PARK PUPPIES: Back on March 5 we told Jo Holland’s story of the
momma German Shepherd mix and her black dog pup and a litter of puppies living at a trailer park near 175 and Masters in southeastern Dallas. Jo had been trying to help them for quite some time.
Last night we got this note from Jo. “For the past 4 years I've been trying to help the mother dog and then this past year her adult black pup from last year's litter. The only rescue group that came to my aid was DuckTeam 6. And tonight they caught all the dogs!
“Just had to share the good news! I couldn't stop crying when I found out.
“The link below tells the story and shows photos of the Mom, Blackie and 9 pups. The pups look like the first litter she had. She had 8 that time and I was able to get them all adopted.
"I'm so happy they will now have homes!!! I hope some of you might consider donating to Duck Team 6. They will need a lot of funds to fix and vaccinate all
these doggies.
“One lady that received my forwarded e mail has promised to pay for the mother and Blackie's spay and shots. She is an angel. Seeing stray animals get help and homes makes my day!”

In an overnight note, Duck Team 6’s Rekka Melby told us, “When we checked on them over the weekend, we finally saw them for the first time and thought there were only four. Turns out our recon was off by a bit...there are 11 puppies!”
White Rock Dog will take some of the puppies but more help is needed. Email [email protected] to offer to help. The Duck Team 6 donation link is HERE.
THIS DOG HAS A HOME: Yes, this little dog Knight has a home. The reason I’m running his photo is because it gives me a chance to run one of the greatest
passages I’ve ever seen about an animal and his humans. This little guy was an owner return at the Collin County Animal Services shelter and our trusty contact, the volunteer shelter walker Allison Roberts, explained what happened: “He is a little bit skittish and was adopted and returned because their 3-year-old was torturing him and he snapped at her. I met the toddler in person and she really was awful -- she was chasing
him around and mom saw no problem with that. “ If you want to see more Collin County adoptables, go to the volunteer-maintained Facebook page HERE or the county site HERE. Oh, and in case you have a kid who wants to meanly chase a dog, this girl Rose looks like she wouldn’t put up with it -- but, of course, she’s a sweetheart at CCAS and totally available for adoption. And she is so obviously an Earhound.
CONTEMPLATIONS: One of the great joys of my life is typing along then turning to pet whatever dog has walked up to say hello. Maybe they’re saying, “Hello, doofus. Get up and let me out now.” Whatever they’re saying, it’s a great feeling to look into the eyes and see someone who puts up with you. ... Hold onto that thought. Yeah, I can’t remember what it was, either. ... Readlarrypowell.com kind of likes Dallas City Council member Dwaine Caraway’s idea to get rid of plastic trash bags. Plastic bags roost in our trees and flutter like ghostly chickens and roll through our yards like science-experiment tumbleweeds. Some grocery stores hand out plastic bags so thin you can breath through them. They’re so weak they won’t hold anything with a corner. Of course, if you make grocery stores drop plastic bags, what about all those fast food joints that sling food into a plastic bag? I don't do fast food these days. May all that fastfood trash blowing around is paper. Gee, I wonder if consumers have any responsibility.
