Alright, ladies and gents, let’s see what we can turn up today. In no particular order:
POLICE STATION DOG STILL WAITING: What is the matter with people? Is the city awash with residents who are fans of drama in which a life is at stake? Remember this dog? Taz or 7 or Lopy-- so much of a dog that she had three names. The dog was rescued from living outdoors at the South Central Police Station in Dallas. Officers took care of her and when she developed an upper respiratory and eye infection they sought help from Dallas Animal Services and now the dog sits absolutely unwanted on the clock at the city shelter. How is that possible? Email [email protected] to ask about helping this dog live a long life. Ask about A774876 -- when you’re in the slammer, you’re a number not a name. ...
TEXAS HUMANE LEGISLATION NETWORK has issued an appeal for more help in blocking some laws that would hurt the legal tools to protect animals Go to thln.org to see the “action alert.” ...
YOU MAY REMEMBER we recently ran a story about the Society For Companion Animals taking in a dog named Belle who was in the Dallas Animal Services Shelter and Adoption Center with a badly injured leg. Tawana reports, “We tried to save it even had a specialist look but had to have her leg removed. She is doing great and will grow up to be a great dog. She is flying this week to New York where she will get adopted.” (See that ad to the left about the fundraiser for SFCA? Belle is one of the dogs helped by donations to SFCA.) Tawana is always looking for volunteers to help these animals fly out of Dallas to safe places to live. You want to help her with the effort, email [email protected] . ...
THIS DOG’S PHOTO cracks me up. His name is “Os” and I wonder, of course, why not “Oz” but he apparently is “The Great and Powerful Os.” He’s an 8-year-old charmer in the care of Lucy’s Lost Loved Ones -- the people whose motto is “We’re Saving Chihuahuas, One at a Time”. to ask about this dog or any of the Shih Tzu types they also have managed to rescue, call 817-714-0990 or email [email protected]. [LARRY ASIDE: I cannot explain how an obviously distinct dog like this one winds up totally unwanted. I cannot devote any more time to trying to figure it out so I’ll just announce that the evidence is clear that jackasses roam the earth. Pardon my entirely accurate French.] ...
KODIAK PLEA FROM OUT AT THE LAKE: Krista Mc Anally, who runs the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake Shelter at Tool, about an hour southeast of Dallas, is trying to find some help for this cat, Kodiak.
Here’s the story from Krista: “Kodiak and Sophia were sent out from HSCCL for neuter/spay on March 18 only to be found to have an Upper Respiratory Infection, and surgery postponed while we treated them for URI. Despite being immediately started on antibiotics, they quickly developed pneumonia and have been very ill. After first vet visit, changing antibiotics and starting subcutaneous fluid injections every 4-6 hours Sophia began to improve and continues a slow recovery.
Unfortunately Kodiak has not. He has been plagued with severe drooling, gagging
and coughing. In addition to antibiotics and sub-q fluids, he has been on nonsteroidal injections to decrease swelling in his throat to help swallowing with little improvement. On return to the vet this morning Kodiak was given an injection of Covina [14 day antibiotic], atropine to decrease drooling and started on a medication to improve his appetite. Visual inspection by vet at both visits had yielded no reason orally for the profuse drooling and he is too ill to be sedated to look further down his throat on the off chance that he has an obstruction. We continue to support him with fluid injections, give atropine injections as needed, and provide soft food, A/D, and tuna water to entice him to eat. Finally, this afternoon, with drooling decreased after Atropine he is sipping water enhanced with electrolytes!! Your help with veterinary bills for Kodiak and Sophia would be much appreciated. I have attached pictures of Kodiak taken when healthy, and now while ill.”
To offer to help, [email protected] or call 903-432-3422.
[LARRY ASIDE: Yes, this is just one cat out of many in the world who need help. But you never know. Saving this one cat may be affect more than the cat -- a human heart may be permanently warmed, a new rescuer may be born, a new bit of energy may arrive in the rescue movement. One cat, many possibilities.] ...
EVERMAN SISTER TRIO: Heather Harrison sent out a note about the animals in the Everman Animal Shelter, a facility that is becoming more and more crowded, she says.
Among the animals are this 4-month-old Heeler/Lab mix, the
ultra-cuddly Tiny Tim. Healthy, up to date on shots and completely without a home.
The three girls we’ve posted before, but they still aren’t drawing any attention.
They are Asia, Ally and Avery -- 4-month-old Lab sisters.
Heather says, “They are very undersocialized.” And they’re malnourished, of course.
To ask about helping these animals or any animals in the Everman shelter, email [email protected] or call 309-299-5665.
CONTEMPLATION: We still haven’t been able to acquire information about the plans and projects following the apparently difficult merger of the Metroplex Animal
Coalition, Dallas Animal Advocates (that's the DAA cool logo) and the Dallas Companion Animal Project. It was, apparently, one of those things that took a lot of “backroom” discussions among three non-profits (DCAP, originally a city-appointed no-kill task force, became a non-profit umbrella organization -- don’t know if the City of Dallas had to legally un-appoint the task force to allow the taxpayer-created panel to become a non-profit. If that happened, it happened quietly.) And, we don’t have the announcement of the next big thing for DCAP. (All 3 websites and Facebook sites appear dormant and key individuals have been non-responsive to repeatedly emailed questions.) But some of those folks have been busy lately with an animal convention in Austin and the Lee Park festivities this weekend -- that’s
Easter-in-the-Park and Pooch Parade (on Facebook HERE). So, I am such a nice ol’ newshound -- actual working journalist, you know; who, what, where, when,
why and all that keen stuff -- that Readlarrypowell.com is cutting everyone a break at this busy time of the puppy and kitten season. No pressure from us, even though we’re asking questions on behalf of the general public whose support the new organization will need. Of course, sometimes people think the general public isn’t sophisticated enough to understand what’s good for ‘em. Our hope is to explain all of this change in a story so that the many, many people who have supported these individual efforts with time, heart and money for years can see how the united group plans to improve the fates of dogs and cats and other critters in Dallas. Got to be something percolating that the public can know. (That photo? Needed some art to brighten all this contemplatin’. Got it off Dallas Animal Services Facebook page which, according to one of the items, is close to reaching 9,000 “likes” -- 8,929 around 6 a.m. It’s a picture of a guy with a DAS chicken. You just don’t see people in Dallas posing with friendly chickens all that frequently. As I recall from my early years as a reporter in East Texas, barnyard fowl can be notoriously standoffish.)
