DATELINE: DALLAS Where Winter Can Come Early and Summer Can Stay Late, Texas (Nov. 17, PetPowellPress) -- No Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday afternoon, what did you do? Sit around and shiver while watching Green Bay? Oh, my, if this is autumn, what will winter in North Texas be like? Maybe this is the year they open up that ice rink under the big PVC Archway Bridge over the Trinity and take some photos to boost the winter tourism trade. Ski Dallas! Now, as a matter of fact, we’re opening with a weather-related note.
THE TETHERED DOG
We told the story last week of Tomi Ortiz’ efforts to get better housing for a dog in Lancaster. Help came in time to avoid exposing the dog to the miserably wintry-in- autumn weather around here during the weekend. (That's the "before" photo from our Nov. 11 edition.)
And the successful handoff came due to a longtime friend of Readlarrypowell.com, the veteran rescuer and dogfan Melissa Boesch.
Tomi wrote, “Just wanted to let you know the mission is accomplished! I went with my husband and delivered the dog house thanks to Melissa! The adults weren't home but the teenage daughter and younger boys were. She let us set up the dog house and blankets. I also found out the dog’s name is Tiger in Spanish. But the girl just couldn't understand why people were upset. She said he has food and water and has been like this for years. I tried to explain as nicely as possible but I still don't think she got it. So I left her my info just incase they ever need anything else for the dog.”
[LARRY ASIDE: It is individual hearts that team up to take care of these issues as far as can be done without hiring a lawyer or going to jail! Bless everybody who helped this dog and everybody who kept Tiger in their hearts.]
OUT BY COB TUESDAY?
Danielle Fry, the Animal Transfer Coordinator at Dallas Animal Services sent out a late-evening appeal Sundya on behalf of A862838, also known as Chi Chi. She's about 9 months old, has "lots of energy and lots of love," Danielle wrote. She came to us ans has an injured leg." The vet staff isn't sure if it's the knee or hip, but it does appear to be an older injury that doens't slower the girl down. The deadline to get her out of DAS is close of business Tuesday. Email [email protected].
MEANWHILE IN WEATHERFORD
The report making the rounds of inboxes is that the Weatherford Shelter spent the weekend loaded with animals, some endangered by the needle. According to a note from Lee Ann Adams, toward the end of the week the shelter had taken in 17 dogs, euthanized three and had just one dog -- a Chihuahua -- adopted. As an example of a dog needing some quick help, here is #48570, known as Carla. She’s between 2 and 3 years old and has developed possible kennel cough. To help any animal at the Weatherford shelter, you can stop by 403 Hickory Lane or call 817-598-4111.
RESCUES NEED CRATES, CONDOS?
Word reaches Readlarrypowell.com that the famous no-kill shelter organization Operation Kindness has some surplus crates (all sizes and some folding wire crates) and some extra cat condos for 501c3s who need the equipment. It’s first come, first serve and they want to give them away by Tuesday evening. Go to Operation Kindness at 3201 Earhart Drive in Carrollton. (Call 972-418-7297.)
Naturally because Readlarrypowell.com has received much help from OK through the years and placed a few dogs through the system, we want to always be able to show you some of the more adoptable critters at Operation Kindness. That wonderful dog is Sweetie (#21849110), a lovable 63-pound, nearly 5-year-old Pitty-Shepherd mix who came into OK from another shelter with her puppies. They were adopted and she is in foster care but ready to rock. [LARRY ASIDE: This photo is from the cover of her latest album “Watching For Santa With The Kids,” featuring the great hit, “That Ain’t No Burglar, Get Out the Egg Nog!” I could be kidding.]
That cat is Cali, which explains why she’s in a shelter -- her humans moved to California and couldn’t take the cat with them. She’s about 6 and blessed with a remarkable medium-length coat. [LARRY ASIDE: She is prepared to spend Thanksgiving with a new happy human. And, if needed, she will portray a Pilgrim in your neighborhood reenactment of the Mayflower cats teaching the Pilgrims how to leap from the vessel to to the dry rock and not get their buckled shoes soggy. That’s what I heard.]

CONTEMPLATIONS: Crossposters are the networkers of the animal rescue world. They copy and send and save lives. Some have massive address lists. But there’s apparently a dustup with the “new Yahoo,” according to a note from Gail Canny via Dian Wright and sent to the following peopl --wait, you know what, you may already have it. This is, after all, from a crossposter. The problem is outlined and a petition to be sent to Yahoo can be seen HERE. ... Already sick of Target’s Marshmallow World Christmas commercial, but the Rob Lowe TV arm curtain spot kind of amuses. All these Christmas commercials make me miss decked-out malls, but, of course, they used to make me miss the era when downtowns were fabulous and inspired such songs as Silver Bells with city sidewalks dressed in holiday styles. Heck, hush my mouth, it’s not even Thanksgiving yet! ... Enjoy your week and tell people to Readlarrypowell.com. Every reader means more eyes on available animals.
