DATELINE, DALLAS Where An Autumn Day Is a Thing of Beauty (NOV. 7, PetPowellPress) -- Ah, a Friday and an opportunity to ignore the pressures of a work week in favor of the joys of an upcoming weekend. Let’s move on:
SOPHIE -- SHE’S AVAILABLE
We got the tip on this from Sydney Busch of the Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake which operates the world’s most successful spay/neuter clinic in Gun Barrel City, Texas. Here’s a youngster who needs a home and Friends volunteer Janet Erwin is trying to help her.
Sophie is 13 weeks old, crate-trained, congenial, a “terrier blend” and “passing potty training with flying colors.” She is a “terrier blend” and we don’t know which all is in the blend but based on this photo and those splayed forelegs it may involve some sort of circus act or Olympics gymnastic competition.
Sophie’s adoption fee -- $75 -- includes her first two rounds of puppy shots and worming. To ask about auditioning to adopt Sophie, email [email protected].
Janet says, “Sophie should not be a large dog as both of her parents are small. Sophie was rescued from an animal shelter where she was soon to be put down due to shelter overcrowding.”
A FAREWELL TO CLYDE
Visit our Prayers & Passages Page to see a tribute to this good dog Clyde, a fellow who went from fearful to adoring and adorable. Take some tissue with you when you click to this Prayers & Passages site. The closing of Ginny Rodriguez’ tribute will touch the tender heart. (Click on our Prayers & Passages button in the upper right corner of this page.).
THE DOGS IN WHERE?
Flint, Texas. That’s in Smith County (where Tyler is). East Texas is notorious for shabby treatment of animals. These were abandoned and left to wander. Get the contact information on the artwork. Click it to make it as big as a breadbox.
SPEAKING OF EAST TEXAS
The custody hearing for that SPCA confiscation near Gilmer in Upshur County has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in Judge Lyle Potter’s courtroom, 405 n. Titus St. Thirty-seven cruelly-treated animals -- 30 dogs, 7 puppies -- puppy mill, suspect. You rescuers know the routine.
A HOUSTON DOG
Is this not a great face? [LARRY ASIDE: I am, frankly, envious of Zac's mug!] We got this from our Houston tipster Alexandra Kelsey who forwarded the note from Celestine Khuong of Angels Four Paws Rescue. “This beautiful boy was hit by a car and lost part of his back right leg – BUT THAT DOESN’T SLOW HIM DOWN ONE BIT! Three-legged dogs can do everything a four-legged dog can do, only faster because they don’t have that pesky fourth leg! This precious angel has been in boarding (no fosters available) and now the boarding facility says he has to go because of the holidays. But even if they didn’t – he deserves a loving home - as I’m sure we all agree! This boy has been through enough and would love to find a ‘home for the holidays’ at the very least. ... He has touched the hearts of everyone who has met him, he’s a total lovebug.” Email [email protected].
MEANWHILE IN IRVING
These are the current urgents at the Irving Animal Shelter, reports veteran shelterwalker and photographer of adoptable animals Russell Posch.
They carry the usual descriptions: Some are stray, some are owner surrenders because they’re ALLEGEDLY aggressive to humans or other animals, or because they’re “too expensive” or they’re “escape artists” or they take up too much time. [LARRY ASIDE: I swear, someday I’m going to see an owner surrender because “family moving to Mars” or maybe “animal refuses to stop talking during the news.” People, sheesh.]
The rescue hotline is 972-721-3597. Email the shelter staff at [email protected] and [email protected] . Call the shelter at 972-721-2256 or 57. See available dogs HERE and see available cats HERE.
TWO FUNDRAISING NOTES FOR NOVEMBER 22
First, the Van Zandt Humane Society is hosting a bake sale and Photos With Santa starting at 10 a.m. on November 22 at Ace Hardware on Highway 243 in Canton. It’ll go until “about 3 or whenever we run out of goodies,” according to the official note. They’re looking for donations of baked goods --show off your work! Proceeds will help balance the Humane Society’s budget.
ALSO ON NOV. 22, the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake has scheduled Brew For the Paws from noon to 9 p.m at Cedar Creek Brewery. Read about the Society at www.hsccl.org.
[LARRY ASIDE: My suggestion is that you go to the Van Zandt County Humane society Event first, then go to the brewery. You may not need a designated driver for the bake sale. Just kidding the CCL folks! Anything to raise money for critters! And, besides, not that I'd know, but a good cold brew in autumn is a nice treat. That's what they say. Buy a cake in Canton, a beer in Seven Points. Get some antacids in Gun Barrel City. It all works out.]
ALVARADO ANIMALS
A note from Louisa Bennett reports that the Alvarado animal shelter is “overfull.” It has small and adoptable dogs including this baby. If anyone’s looking for Chihuahua-types, Alvarado has a nice selection! Check out the shelter in person. (Alvarado is that town that surrounds the intersection of I-35W south from Fort Worth and U.S. 67 south from Dallas. Call or text 817-239-4401 or 214-616-6128.
[LARRY ASIDE: Based on its location between Northern and Southern Texas and Eastern and Western Texas, and right on the big highways, Alvarado may be the most accessible city in Texas. No reason to have a full shelter with all that potential traffic.]
CONTEMPLATIONS: Ever work so many days in a row and have so many obligations on your off days that you feel as if you haven’t had a break in years? Yes, I need to win the lottery and take a day or two off. ... Autumn is my favorite season next to baseball. I don’t count Christmas as a season -- I count it as a lifestyle. ... See these two photos? The foggy one was shot Wednesday morning, the sunny one on Thursday morning from the same vantage point over downtown Dallas. Doesn’t matter whether it’s rainy or sunny, Dallas drivers are still lousy in rush hour.
