DATELINE: DALLAS You Gotta Love It, Well, Maybe Not, Texas (Nov. 13, PetPowellPress) -- According to impulsive research, Thursday is the Ides of November. It is also World Kindness Day and in that spirit I will remind you, also, that it is Sadie Hawkins Day. Perhaps you are too young to have heard of Sadie Hawkins. Perhaps, out of kindness, I will explain it in today’s Contemplations. But first, some reports about situations in which you can, perhaps, demonstrate some life-saving, life-enhancing kindness. And an explanation of that mugshot.
THE UPSHUR COUNTY RULING
This dog Rojo, a 5-year-old, 65-pound Australian Shepherd mix has NOTHING to do with the Upshur County confiscation except that he, too, is in the custody of the SPCA of Texas. Rojo, a 5-year-old, 65-pound stray was found and surrendered to the SPCA on November 9. This photograph made me laugh, so I thought someone out there in Readerland either needs him or knows someone who needs him -- that's Rojo on the bottom left, too, relaxing. Go to spca.org.
Money you give to adopt dogs and cats from the SPCA helps take care of animals picked up in that raid in Upshur County, near Gilmer, where 37 dogs were found, 18 of them living in filth inside a single-wide mobile home that was home-base for a puppy mill.
On Monday Upshur County Judge Lyle Potter OK’d an agreement in which the two men in custody in the case agreed to give ownership of the dogs to the SPCA -- that brought to a premature halt a court proceeding that wasn’t going quite like the “defendants” had hoped. The animals will be evaluated before being put up for adoption, the SPCA says.
Donations will help feed and vet these animals until they’re placed -- that’s the way it works.
[LARRY ASIDE: Because it is World Kindness Day I’m not going to post the photos of the two guys who have been charged with cruelty in this case (no need to burden you with their images), but I will give you two links. Click this ONE to see the Longview News-Journal’s report on day one of proceedings and click this SECOND ONE to read about the ruling. I would rather run a photo of a dog needing a home than pictures of two people needing jail time. FYI, lots of animal advocates showed up to support the cause, the paper reported.]
HERE ARE THE IRVING URGENTS
You may recognize some of them, such as the Earhound Pixie and the dog with the great face, Andrea, and that dog, Dos, bottom right, returned after being adopted because he was “too active.” Sheesh. Read about them HERE.The rescue hotline is 972-721-3597 and you should email [email protected] and [email protected]. The shelter’s business numbers are 972-721-2256 or 57. See the adoptable cats HERE.
INJURED DOGS AT DAS
Danielle Fry, the Dallas Animal Services Animal Transfer Coordinator, sent out a note Wednesday afternoon about several dogs that are injured and awaiting either rescue or the needle at the big shelter. This particular dog with one brown eye and one blue eye is an Earhound named Trouble, a Dachshund. You can see how much being partially paralyzed slows him down by clicking HERE. There are several other dogs in need. Email [email protected] to see if you or your rescue group can help.
Danielle’s note explained, “These dogs are injured and need more vetting than we can provide.” The rescuing angels are outside the shelter -- where the dogs ought to be.
THE COLONY’S ADORABLE ADOPTABLES
The note from The Colony’s Animal Control Division Manger Patricia Barrington declares “The Colony’s Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams with cuteness this week. Stop in and check out some of these lovable lumps of fur.”
Where you stop is the animal shelter at 4720 E. Lake Highlands in The Colony. Call 972-370-9250. Email [email protected].
[LARRY ASIDE: My favorite face is that of Lola, picked up on the 9th and available on the 14th. She’s said to have wonderful manners and, according to her on-line bio, “a heart that you can see smiling from quite the distance.” She’s listed as a “French Mastiff” and I believe that is the Americanized term for the dog that starred in the Tom Hanks film Turner and Hooch, a Dogue Du Bordeaux. ]
AT CARROLLTON, THE CLOCK IS TICKING
The clock ticks even for specially designed dogs like this one, Duke, a Schnauzer who looks as if he might have been the model for a Disney cartoon at some point. You can see more Carrollton animals -- all of them on a swiftly moving clock -- by clicking HERE.
[LARRY ASIDE: Among the animals are a cat to whom a kid was allergic and animals whose people didn’t have enough time. What’s the deal with animals being killed because of human conditions? How is that morally right?]
CONTEMPLATIONS: Our New Jersey News Bureau Chief Andy Fisher, married to Ann and owned by Bella the Dog and Peaches the Cat, spotted this story about a kind millionaire on the New York Post’s famous Page Six. High Paws to Ryan Kavanaugh. [And if I’m ever a millionaire, I’ll try to follow the examples set by both Mr. Fisher the Animal Fan and Mr. Kavanaugh the Animal Rescuer. Haven’t checked Wednesday night’s Lotto Texas numbers. Oh, and FYI, Andy pointed out that it was warmer in his northern town of Denville, N.J., Wednesday than it was in Dallas.] ... Remember that lousy photo of the Main Street Garden Christmas tree I published yesterday. Here’s a better photo. It’s kind of an art shot. Not only do you have a better look at the framework of the tree, but you have an excellent mood-setting ingredient in the lower right corner -- my 1999 Ford pickup’s rearview mirror which is symbolic of going back to the time when I could afford to make a car payment. Maybe if I don’t win the Lotto, I’ll get a car for Christmas. I do like those Land Rover LR-4s, he hinted without hope. ... As I type this, my fingers are so cold that I am inspired to rummage through the house and find the Typing Gloves I invented last year. I may have put them away with my Back-of-the-Neck Warming Sleeve. Yeah, maybe I like Hot Dallas better than Iceberg Dallas. And, of course, Sadie Hawkins Day is from the Li'l Abner cartoon strip created by Al Capp. Activate your Google and read up on the past.
