DATELINE: DALLAS, Where We Hope For The Best, Texas (Nov. 10, PetPowellPress) -- This is National Vanilla Cupcake Day. Please, put your cravings aside and read on.
TWO DALLAS DOGS
This came off the Dallas Animal Services Facebook page and it shows a number of things, from the range in sizes of available dogs to the way some clothes don’t fit the dog.
Here’s the caption: “Bambi (L) A863553 and Tanner (R) A840235 love hanging out together, but what they really want are families to call their own. Bambi is a 6-month-old German Shepherd Dog, and Tanner is a 5-month-old Chihuahua. FYI, Tanner is in the process of wiggling out of his Thundershirt in this photo.”
You can meet these two dogs in person by going to the Dallas Animal Services and asking for an introduction. It’s that big building at I-30 and Westmoreland. Open to the public. Dogs, cats available upon request.
MEANWHILE IN IRVING
Well, of course, the Irving Animal Services Shelter is closed on Mondays, but you can plan ahead for a visit. You might want to check out Pixie (that’s the Earhound, “American Folded Flap Variety”) and Dos, who, as you can tell is just “too active.”
These dogs are among several on the “Urgent -- We’re Up For The Needle Next” list at Irving Animal Services. We got their photos from photo-snappin’ shelter walkin’ Russell Posch. Click HERE to see the urgent dogs. The rescue hotline is 972-721-3597 (follow up with an email to [email protected] and or [email protected]. Call the shelter at 972-721-2256 or 57.
Pixie is 5 months old, weighs 28 pounds, is spayed, healthy (#24211366) and the friendly Pit mix wound up in the shelter because, her surrendering owner said, “Cannot afford.” [LARRY ASIDE: One look at her and you know he means she runs up a phone bill -- obviously the reason that ear flops like it does. CCES -- Compressed Calling Ear Syndrome. ]
Dos, 40 pounds, a year old AND a neutered Retriever/Pit fellow (23407321) is a friendly dog who was an adoption return because -- get this -- he was “too active.” [LARRY ASIDE: If you want something that just lays around the house, get a rug.]
A BURNS FLAT NOTE
Terry Lynn Fisher is under extra pressure in Burns Flat, Okla., because the city manager has told her it’s time to move some of the long-term dogs out of the shelter. By “move them out,” the meaning is either find a rescue or an adoptor, or someone with a needle full of euthanasia solution. See if you can help her by emailing [email protected]. Terry Lynn has the animals ready to go, they just need a safe destination.
A SUNDAY EVENING NOTE FROM HOUSTON
This note about an unfortunate situation at the city shelter BARC in Houston -- Bureau of Animal Rescue & Control -- was written by someone who might just have a grip on things. Here’s how it reads: “Apparently an undesirable citizen decided to breed Bassets (not sure with what) and ending up surrendering approximately 17 dogs on Thursday to BARC.
There is a nursing mother with 6 babies, 5 adult males and females (ages 2-3), 1 4-month old, and 4 15-week old. ... We took out the 5 adults and the 4 month old yesterday afternoon. They are all incredibly shy, but not a mean bone in any of them. In fact, a volunteer had to pick up each one and carry them outside, and they gave us no trouble whatsoever doing it.
“Once they were all together, you should have seen them light up. They became very comfortable, even jawing with a dog in the next run who was barking up a storm at them. When it came time to get them in last night, they huddled together to form one giant Basset. But we reached in, grabbed each one and carried them in, again, no problems.”
That’s one of the moms, we think. To ask about helping these dogs, email [email protected] or call 832-623-3871 -- if no immediate response, call the front desk at 713-229-7351.
LITTER NOTES: Not that our theme is litter, but here goes: A Christmas Bazaar will benefit the Humane Society of Henderson County Shelter in Athens -- it’s open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday at The Litterbox Thrift Shop at 303 N. Prairieville St. just off the downtown square in Athens. And it’ll be open from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Monday the 17th. Yes, The Litterbox. Clever name for a thrift shop. ... In the meantime, the current needs at A Different Breed Animal Rescue include big Milkbone dog business, crates to replace the worn out inventory, handy people for help building shelters at the ADB sanctuary and “old kitty litter buckets -- we need them for storing food, so just send them our way,” writes ADB. One more thing -- they need “newspapers.” Why is that? Because those things are great for cage and crate lining. Fewer and fewer people read them, but they do come in handy in a shelter. ... And one more kitty litter note: According to the DAS Facebook page, Dallas Animal Services needs donations of litter for both the big shelter and the Every Day Adoption Center in far north Dallas.
CONTEMPLATIONS: As this edition comes to a close and we’ve got nothing really bad to say about the Dallas Cowboys, except that they’re lucky that was Jacksonville and not a real team, let’s just wish everyone a happy Monday and an extraordinary workweek. ... If space aliens came to earth and saw the highway construction work in Dallas, would they leave and vow to come back when we’d finished building the city? ... Quick: Worst place to vacation when a polar vortex is on the way?
