We introduce this weekend's column with a front porch napper.
This cat is known as Cowtown. We’ll get to that in a moment.
Currently he shares our front porch with our longtime feral Smidge, also a black cat. We trap, neuter, return these rascals - still, now and then, a kitten or two wanders up.
Cowtown showed up last year -- fully grown, kind of willing to be petted, but not quite. Every time neighbors move out, we seem to get an influx of cats. Could be worse -- they could lock ‘em up in the house and drive away. Cowtown is resolutely independent save for a pet on the noggin when he's eating. Doesn't hiss, just moves away.
One recent chilly night I caught Cowtown napping in a camping chair we keep on the porch for animals that drop by. So he is perfect for the spotlight of Let Sleeping Dogs Sleep and Napping Cats Nap, our long-running weekend feature. A split second after the click of the shutter, Cowtown's eyes were wide open.
(We’ve published a lot of slumbering critters in more than a decade...now and then we’ll feature one that has wandered onto our ranch, er, household lot in Oak Cliff. Send your photos of your sleeping dogs, cats and other critters to [email protected]. We’re proud to publish them -- they give my fellow insomniacs hope that sleep is attainable for them, too. Please don’t show up on our front porch and try to sleep -- unless you want to be neutered or spayed.)
And why is Cowtown called “Cowtown”? Because my musicalspouse Martha saw him walking away from us when we first discovered him and on display was quite a formidable set of boybits. Martha says, “Let’s name him after that Bob Will’s song, Big Balls in Cowtown.” The name stuck. Click HERE and hear George Strait's version from '96.
[Remember, nominate your slumbering critters for Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap, by sending photo and info to [email protected].]
A FEW WEEKEND ANIMAL NOTES:
Our Burns Flat, Okla., tipster, the relentless rescuer Terry Lynn Fisher, is in a pinch. She writes, “Dear God.... Please help me save these innocent lives. My heart is so full of sorrow and pain right now. I do the best I can by myself. Somehow, we have kept it NO KILL since July 2006. Now, that's all about to change, times 4! My city manager contacted me and said the ACO has told him several have been there a long time. He said these four MUST LEAVE BY NEXT WEEK OR THEY WILL HAVE TO PUT DOWN... My heart and soul can't handle loosing them! It will destroy everything I am.”
Among the four is this dog Ginger. Terry Lynn says, ““This tan girl loves to run. You can see her ears flapping in the picture.. Sweet and precious, she was arrested on the Fourth of July, terrified by the fireworks going off all around her.”
Get in touch with Terry Lynn at [email protected]. She can tell you about the others on “The Burns Flat List.”
LUCKY TO BE ALIVE, says Heather Harrison, who sent the note about this dog in Fort Worth. She wrote, “This adorable lil girl is in need of rescue now! She was removed from a terrible teenage domestic violence situation, so she is lucky to be alive! She is now in the custody of a case worker whom has paid for her vetting. She is guessed to be about 5 months. Very sweet! Loves to cuddle right next to a human. Good with other dogs. She is a little timid of loud noises, but that is to be expected. (UTD on shots, dewormed, HW neg.)... She is in a very temp situation, so she needs moved ASAP.” Email [email protected].
