Readlarrypowell.com has always explained that the purpose of the weekend feature, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap, is to give hope to insomniacs.
We have two additional purposes, of course. One is to show how animals can simply relax without a care in the world in the right environment. The other purpose is to show that it is the human element that gives an animal a long and happy life.
Yes, the human element. So, for this edition of Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap, we turn to the human element, our pal and fellow Texas High School alumnus from Texarkana, Texas, the rescuin’ critter fan Dianne Cole. Her husband Mike also plays a role in these canine lives -- they've got him wrapped around their little or big paws. And looking at Cisco and Abby napping on that couch, what else can you say but “those dogs are home.”
Perhaps, a couple of years ago, you remember reading here about Dianne’s efforts to save a bunch of little dumped dogs in the area around Mountain View College in Southwest Dallas. She pulled it off. One of the dogs took a little bit of time to rescue. Read on.
These photos are from a recent weekend -- and that may mean a recent weekend without a Dallas Cowboys game on TV because that season ended later than usual but earlier than fans hoped.
Here are Dianne’s explanations of the photos.
“The first is Cisco (red collar) and Abby (pink collar) napping on the couch. It was a lazy Sunday and we were all napping. I have to keep a cover on the sofa at all times. Abby usually claims the sofa for herself...stretching out her full length right in the middle so nobody, or no other dogs, can get on it. LOL! We call it ‘Abby's Couch,’ but occasionally one of the other dogs will sneak up there with her. The all have a ‘dog’ chair that is their chair only and you never know which dog you will catch napping there.
“The middle picture is our precious Lady. For whatever reason, she always sleeps on the dog bed with her head hanging off onto the floor. Cisco does the same thing. Abby very seldom sleeps on a dog bed, except in the bedroom at night. I think she deems herself too good to sleep on a dog bed when she has the couch. LOL!
“Lady at 13 and is getting old and frail...not quite as steady on her feet as she used to be...often has trouble getting up and getting around on our tile floors can be tricky.
“She was beginning to lose her hearing, but after suffering with a bout of vestibular disease (also known as ‘old dog’ disease) a couple of months ago she is now totally deaf. She doesn't let that slow her down, but occasionally I can see the confusion in her sweet eyes, like she's thinking, ‘Mom, I can see you, but I can't hear you.’ It just breaks my heart.
“She often lays out in the backyard in the sun and barks for no other reason other than she can...we know she didn't hear anything. Her bark isn't the same either since she lost her hearing, but we love her with all our hearts. She is the matriarch of the pack and still rules the roost.
“The last picture is my sweet Lil' Bit...the one I spent 4-1/2 months trying to rescue over by work at Mountain View College. She lived on the Dallas National Golf Course, just north of the college, after being dumped with 3 of her puppy siblings that we caught quickly. Two, Neko and Bella, now live with Stephen Pyler in New Mexico and Stephen found a home for Arianna. Lil' Bit was the lone holdout...I provided food, water, toys, heart worm preventative and lots of love for her during those long months before she let me catch her. Now she lives THE LIFE! At 14 pounds she thinks she's as big as the three Lab mixes that are now her fur siblings!
“She's been with us for just a little over 3 years now and still ‘just tolerates’ Mike. LOL! She is MY dog. She has more to do with Mike when I'm not home, but the minute I walk in the door he no longer exists and she will actually bark and growl at him.
“Several weeks ago he was sick and she actually went to him and got in his lap several times that day while I was home. We think she must have realized he was sick and tried to make him feel better, but she hasn't had much to do with him since.”
[LARRY ASIDE: So, dear readers, you see by reading this that, indeed, the key to a happy life for an animal is not just a human, but a human heart. It’s the essential element. That’s why readlarrypowell.com celebrates the people who rescue animals. You may have the first good heart that animal has ever encountered. Yes, indeed, bless those hearts!]
REMEMBER: To nominate your slumbering critter -- dog, cat, ferret, emu, mule, emule, e-tcetera -- for the spotlight of internationally-read Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap, send photos and info to [email protected]. We publish these photos of safe and happy animals to help insomniacs find inspiration to nod off -- and, of course, some insomniacs have just rushed out to a pet store to buy a big dog bed to hang their heads off and try to assume the effective “Sleep Like Lady Head-drooping Position.” Good luck, my fellow turners-n-tossers.
