EDITION OF THURSDAY, FEB. 19, 2015 (PetPowellPress)-- Usually when our Northeast Bureau Chief Andrew Fisher sends a photo it has to do with Bella the Dog or Peaches the Cat or an incredibly beautiful scene at Indian Lake in Denville, N.J. He sent this one Wednesday after shooting it “at the pool-table store on U.S. 46 in Denville.”
Andy’s a longstanding member of the media -- print and broadcast, including writing for NBC’s Today Show. He can’t pass up a good story -- even if it freezes his newshound toes off. Yes, he understands that it is spring in Texas and we are suffering with each unexpected dip into the high 30s or low 40s. (Anyone needs any of this snow, let us know. It was 15 degrees there when I was writing this Wednesday night. That snow will hold until you drive the pickup up there and claim it.)
Now, on to our daily report.
THE IRVING CRUNCH
This note came the relentless Russell Posch, the photo-taking shelter walker who saves Irving animal lives with his camera. He says, “The staff has added 11 dogs to the ‘code red’ list for this week. They are considered ‘special needs’ due to physical or behavior issues. The dogs on the list need to be tagged by 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, and must be out of the shelter by 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21.”
Special needs? See that Chihuahua on the upper left? Neck puncture wounds. That special enough for you?
Some of these are stray and some are owner surrenders -- usual reason. Not enough time, too many animals, didn’t win lottery.
Read about these animals in need HERE.
The rescue hotline is 972-721-3597 and follow up the call with emails to [email protected] and [email protected]. The shelter numbers are 972-721-2256 or 972-721-2257.
MEANWHILE IN GARLAND
Patty Turner forwarded two notes about dogs in the Garland Animal Shelter. Both notes originated from the shelter’s animal-friendly Hugo Espinoza who reaches out to rescues.
This first dog, Ulysses (A198673), is an owner-surrender who, the owner claimed (on his way out the door, I assume), is a Clumber Spaniel mix.
TIME OUT: WE HAVE AN UPDATE as of nearly 10 p.m. Wednesday -- the "Clumber" has been adopted. Focus on another dog or cat!
(LARRY ASIDE: Readlarrypowell.com’s opinion is the guy wouldn’t know a Clumber from a Plumber and probably just accidentally heard the term Clumber Spaniel when he inadvertently walked through a bar that was showing Westminster competition to the local Dog Show Fantasy League.)
The sad thing is, Hugo’s note describes this pup as “not an adoptable dog -- he was noting to be trembling in the corner. But was able to be petted and handled and teeth looked at. He was noted to be hyperactive to nose. He is rescue-only and has no tags. He will need to be pulled no later than the end of day [Thursday]. He is about 1-2 years old. He has no rescue interest and if we do not hear back from an approved rescue we cannot extend him."
Fortunately someone saved the pup. But there is a tough case still waiting. Keep reading.
Hugo is the Community Resource/Rescue Coordinator for Garland Animal Services.
He has a handle on this next dog, too. She’s A198801 and she’s been struck by a car, it seems. The Pittie girl “was picked up by one of our officers, who responded to a call about a dog being hit by a car. Our vet evaluated, and noted that the dog has trouble walking on rear legs, so is suspecting a pelvic injury. She also has chronic-looking dermatitis of underside of body and legs and feet. Could be mange, could be allergies. Our vet is estimating she is 4 years old. She is currently on hold until the 21st, and we need her to be pulled ASAP.”
You know what happens if this dog doesn’t get help.

NEEDING HELP IN WEATHERFORD
Stacey Carney, the animal rescuer known as Stacey the Stylist, sent this note about serious needs in the Weatherford-Parker County Animal Shelter. The plea for help originated with the shelters’s Cheryl Tanferno.
These dogs are all regarded as “special needs dogs.” I’ve batched them for you. Two are heartworm positive, two have skin issues and one has an awful curse -- she’s a wonderfully beautiful Pit girl.
Stacey’s note reads, “These dogs will be the first on the EU list at the Weatherford shelter unless we can get them to safety.”
Email [email protected] or [email protected] or call the shelter at 817-598-4111. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by 403 Hickory Lane in Weatherford.
CARROLLTON ANIMALS WAITING -- AGAIN
Here's one of several dogs at the Carrollton Animal Services Shelter. The note that arrived with the link to the "urgent" photos reads "Even though our space is very tight and kennel runs are very full, we have decided to give the dogs on last week's Urgent List one more week, but this is the best we can give them. If they are not place we will not be able to hold them again. ... We know they are moslty Pits but they deserve a chance, too."

There must be a program called Idiots Without Borders. Because there are, indeed, idiots across the state lines from sea to shining sea.
CONTEMPLATIONS: Say it ain’t so, Vanilla! Word to your bailbondsman. Vanilla Ice, Carrollton's own Robbie Van Winkle, was nailed in a theft investigation. See the story HERE and hear the big hit HERE. ... Didn’t see the Downtown Banjo Man (see yesterday's report) Wednesday morning, but sitting on the sidewalk in front of the 7-Eleven next to the Bryan St. DART station at noon was a harmonica-playing guitar picker. Wasn’t that much warmer at noon in the shade. Couldn’t understand the song he was playing. But I’m wondering now if maybe there could be a Musician Flash Mob in the works somewhere downtown. Not sure people still do Flash Mobs. Maybe I can get these people together and get them organized for the upcoming Texas Rangers World Series Victory Parade this fall. We’ve got a banjo and a guitar. What we need now is a xylophone, a tuba, six or seven clarinets and a portable Theremin. And someone who can sing while marching. See how inspirational a single sight in downtown Dallas can be? Dallas, Big Things Happen Near. ... Theremin? My fellow Trekkers know what that is. We started with New Jersey landscape today and we’ll end with New Jersey soundscape -- the New Jersey Symphony.
