EDITION OF FRIDAY, AUGUST 21, 2015 (PetPowellPress) --
A FRIDAY EVENING UPDATE REGARDING TWO DOGS IN THE GARLAND ANIMAL SHELTER. The info comes from our reliable tipster Deborah Verner who tells us that the little pitty with the nasal discharge, James Dean, was rescued Friday afternoon -- we're working on seeing which group so we can direct donations to vet care and adoption-minded people.
The other dog in trouble -- an emaciated Pit girl, is, Deborah writes, "still at the shelter as of tonight.
"She is scheduled for EU if a rescue tag isn't received by 7 a.m This one is really getting to me. ... She deserves to at least know what love is."
To offer to help this dog, email (quickly!) this address: rescue@garlandtx.gov.
NOW BACK TO OUR EARLIER FRIDAY REPORT.
Are we are entering the final weekend before school starts? I can’t keep up, but I’m pretty sure I still owe someone some homework from the mid-‘60s. All that aside, let’s focus on animals and other things that make Dallas/Fort Worth such a special place -- like DART’s plan to destroy part of First Presbyterian Church downtown to lay down a new train route Is nothing sacred in this town?
Forget I asked that. I know better. If a wrecking ball can hit it, it’s in danger in Dallas. If you build it, the wrecking ball will come -- eventually.
TWO DOGS NEEDING SPOTS
That has nothing to do with their coats; it has to do with their lives.
One we’ve mentioned before. Gabriela Pataro is hustling on behalf of Buster (A903-632). You may recall he was rescued in southern Dallas after living in a park until people got nervous about his health. Gabriela had been trying to get him to safety when he wound up in the hands of Dallas Animal Services. I asked Gabriela, “Anybody get that dog out of DAS yet?” and she replied, “Nope. I’m getting
desperate.”
MORNING UPDATE: Gabriela sent an early morning note and photo announcing, "Buster can SIT and has been moved into the adoption area of DAS. ... He still needs a good home. Drop into Adoptions Kennel 26 and ask about Buster Red A903632. Free heartworm greatment by DAS. His heartworm count is faint. Let's get him out and into a good famiy, please."
In the meantime, Louanne Smith sent a note about this dog on the right.
She wrote, “I’m only crossposting to help save this sweet soul.”
His name is Martin -- he’s A902229 and he’s about a year old, came in as a stray and was “so excited for company.”
Ask about either of these dogs at dasrescue@dallascityhall.com.
MORE THAN A DOZEN AT DENTON
Amy Poskey, the famous Denton animal advocate, sent a note saying that there are at least 13 dogs available at Denton’s McNatt Animal Care and Adoption Center as the weekend arrives. . Among the most handsome is Hank, a youngish fellow “who is just the sweetest boy.” He is an owner-surrender.
The story reads: "HANK is a 2-5 yr young male Labby/Coonhound mix who is just the sweetest boy!!! This handsome boy is friendly with people(including children), gets along with other pooches, and is housebroken!!! What a great boy who will make a nice addition to your family!

A CHUCKLE AND CATS GALORE
Take Me Home Pet Rescue’s great newsletter arrived Thursday afternoon and had a note about two adoption events (10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the rescue’s adoption center at 361 W. Campbell Road, Suite 303 in Richardson) and 1 pm.-4 p.m. Sunday at Hollywood Feed, 10720 Preston Road in Dallas. [LARRY ASIDE: Hollywood Feed? I don’t get around much. Thought it was a restaurant. It’s a pet store. Several of them in town.]
Then, there was this riotous artwork. Just look at that quote.
Congratulations to TMHPR for bringing some funny notions to the rescue world. And, may all your animals find homes this weekend.
Oh, yeah, the group’s Cat of the Week is that one above: Itty Bitty Kitty. A petite cat with a big presence. Dog of the week? Beau. Rescued out of the middle of a busy street. Shepherd mix. Learning manners.
So, yep, go to www.takemehomepetrescue.com for all the adoption information you'll need.
CONTEMPLATIONS: Saw a story about a discovery of a malfunctioning human obesity gene. Quoted a doctor as saying, “It’s a big deal. Could have been a little more sensitive -- synonyms for “big” being “important” or “significant.” At least he didn’t say, “It’s a ginormous development!” or “This is one big bite out of a big-ass problem.” [LARRY ASIDE: I write that on behalf of my fellow Orthodox Heftarians -- we’re people who believe in a donut that make your genes shout, “Holy glaze, fatman, that’s a great donut!”] ... Saw another story about how the post-Katrina response has turned out to be a good thing for humans and their animals. Written by AP’s great reporter Sue Manning. A lot of that rescuing and matching up post-Katrina and Rita was handled by big-hearted people from Dallas/Fort Worth, as some of you will recall. That was an astounding time. Here’s the LA CBS STORY and here’s the AP site that shows Sue’s range and her animal work. ... In the meantime, an email arrived with this subject line: “Home Depot & Others are now offering Free Window Quotes.” So, yep, it made me think of store employees standing outside windows and shouting free quotes for the shoppers’ pleasure. There might be this one from Stella in Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window. “Intelligence. Nothing has caused the human race so much trouble as intelligence.” Then there’s a great quote by the former North Texas congressman Dick Armey: ““Three groups spend other people’s money: children, thieves, politicians. All three need supervision.” And, finally, this is a good window quote: The great Will Rogers who pegged the 21st century before anybody was halfway done with the 20th. “Everything is changing,” Will said. “People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.” [That one’s dedicated to all you people who thought The Daily Show was journalism.]
