EDITION OF THURSDAY, JULY 21, 2016 (PetPowellPress) -- This may be the favorite of all the photographs I have snapped in downtown Dallas over the past decades.
I was exiting the underground parking garage on the north side of Republic Center when, across the DART tracks I saw this dog walker being stretched by two dogs interested in separate trees. Click on the art to make it larger.
It's worth the click. For years, nobody walked a dog in downtown Dallas -- few people lived there. Nowadays, why, heck, Dallas is just like a real city. Bless the dogs of Downtown Dallas.
LIKE A REAL CITY?
Yes, indeed. For example, the folks at Dallas Animal Services are trying to find some help for this dog and her TEN tiny puppies.
Here’s the story from Danielle Fry and the DAS transfer (and the problem may have been solved by the time you read this, but, just in case, read on): “This loving momma and her puppies are in need of transfer at Dallas Animal Services. This sweet momma pitty came into the shelter super pregnant! She gave birth to 10 of the tiniest babies ever! She is a great mom and is very sweet.
“She has no qualms about you handling her babies, as long as she gets some love, too.
“Our vets are very worried about her capabilities of feeding 10 growing babies. She ... could use a lot of nutrition herself. Most of the babies are fat and happy. We are worried about one of the little pups that wants to nurse but seems weaker than the rest.
“Mom also doesn’t seem too interested in her. This family needs out of the shelter ASAP so they can be in a home that can watch and help this mom and her pups thrive. Because of mom’s condition and our worry for these pups, our vet staff is asking that this family be transferred by close of business tomorrow (7/21/16).”

MEANWHILE, IN FERRIS, STILL WAITING
Laura Macias, who has been working to get more attention to the Ferris Animal Shelter, just minutes south of Dallas on I-45, says, “Several weeks ago we posted out Ferris and sadly there has been hardly anything that has changed. All still hoping, still waiting ... They could desperately use your help.”
Not much foot traffic; lots of paw traffic. First off, the contact point at Ferris is the ACO -- email [email protected] and/or call 972-877-4180. Leave a message because Chelcee is the only employee and she may be out chasing dogs or cats. The police department -- call the main number -- will page her if they’re not busy, Laura says.
These are some examples of the animals waiting at Ferris.
Nana is a Bully mix whose babies, once photographed in a U.S. Mail containers, are now about 8 weeks old.
Then, that Earhound momma is Allie, a small, young Shepherd type, who gave birth to those two white puppies. Puppies are about a month older now and approaching adoptable age.
That cat is Muffins, a half-year-old girl who is “loving and cuddly and purrs all the time.”
She is currently the only cat in the shelter. So, somewhere there’s a someone for this green-eyed cat-in-a-basket.
Then there’s there story of Yappers, a 12-pound, young, adorable Terrier mix. Here’s her story: “This super cute little girl was left at the shelter gate one morning with just a crate and a note. Sweet baby!!! She is just as precious as she can be and absolutely adores anyone who give her treats.”
Now, on the surface, it sounds really mean to leave a little dog in a crate at a shelter. But, think about it. People in North Texas have dumped animals in a lot worse places -- three words: Dowdy Ferry Road.
In cased you missed it in an earlier paragraph, the contact points at the Ferris Animal Shelter are: [email protected] and/or 972-877-4180.
CONTEMPLATIONS: Here’s a visual reminder of Clear the Shelters Day. If anyone reading this has a friend who doesn’t already have a dog or cat, I will be stunned. Still, you can clip and send that artwork to people you don’t even know. (Click on it to make it grow like a Rottie puppy!) Those people may not yet realize that they need a dog or cat hanging around the house. What good is a dog or cat around the house? They offer more comfort than a recliner, though, of course, some are actually classified as “recliners.” ... How far apart will the Texas Rangers fall in the second half of the season? Ignore that question. You gotta have faith. THIS is the year we get to attend a World Series Parade and, of course, later in the fall I’ll be high-kicking with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.
... Did Duncanville have a visit from the world’s most optimistic bank robber on Monday? A guy with a white eye patch and gold teeth robbed a bank and escaped on a bicycle. This is a good time to quote Willie Sutton who, when asked why he robbed banks, was said to have replied, “That’s where the money is.” Where was Willie? Jail. Here’s a SONG FROM THE GREAT JIMMIE RODGERS that I’m dedicating this to every hold-up artist, every burglar, every thief currently walking free. Not for long I hope. That’s a photo of The Singing Brakeman, AKA The Blue Yodeler, performing for folks in a cell back in the ‘20s and to put a Dallas note on this, one of his biggest fans was a local girl, Bonnie Parker. You can look it up.
