Will Rogers, Patti Page, a cat, pups, old dogs, people and a 'possum

EDITION OF TUESDAY, JULY 26, 2016 (PetPowellPress) -- Aren’t you glad there aren’t THREE major parties? Now, let’s dive into this edition.

THE PUPPIES WAIT
Dallas Animal Services is still waiting for help with these four pups found in a shed at an abandoned house Saturday night AFTER Clear the Shelters ended. 
Nobody stepped up right away, but, DAS reports, “Dallas Pets Alive would be happy to help out, but their current foster homes are full, so they need someone willing to care for them for a few weeks. If you think you can help, here's what you need to know. http://dallaspetsalive.org/foster/.”
And, you can also email [email protected] to volunteer to help with any animal situation at the shelter.

THE OLDER DOGS REPORT

This combination comes from Dinesha Schmidt at A Different Breed Rescue. She used “It’s raining seniors” in her subject line. 

Sara Back got in touch with her about these two Lab mixes. “Their owner was an old friend of mine who committed suicide recently.  As her husband was an injured firefighter who had died several years prior, she left two boys and two dogs.  The boys have homes but the dogs do not. ... Her final request was not to kill her beloved dogs.  The dogs are 9-10-year-old old littermates, one male/one female.  The female is spayed, the male is not neutered.  They are inside/outside animals.  They have not been around other dogs too much but are very good, very loving w/people.  The female has cataracts and doesn't see well.   The male does pee in the house sometimes (a recent occurrence).” 
The female is in the background of the photo. Sara writes, “The family has given me until Friday and then the dogs will be turned over to a kill shelter if I haven't been able to help by then.”

Susie is 10 and the note reads “Housebroken gets along with everything. Shaved down for the summer. Long-haired. Still playful. Being fostered but cant stay there long.”

[LARRY ASIDE: There is no end to the ways dogs wind up living long lives, then falling victim to the human condition. Beyond sad.]

THE OKLAHOMA REPORT


We have two stories from Oklahoma. One is from “out west” at Burns Flat and the other is Claremore in the northeastern corner of the state.
FROM BURNS FLAT: The calls keep coming to Terry Lynn Fisher at Burns Flat., Okla. She reported Monday, “I just got a call from someone that found this kitten laying in the highway. Leg is hanging by a thread. I have three animals at vet and still paying on several. There is no way I can take this on at this time. Anyone available to save baby?”
 "Will this cat survive?"I asked Terry Lynn who replied, “Yes. Just minus a leg. You know me. I like the misfits.”

Indeed, Terry Lynn is accustomed to having three-legged dogs and cats around. She finds homes for them. To ask how you can help Terry Lynn save this cat, email [email protected]. Looking back over Terry Lynn’s stories of saving animals, she may hold the Oklahoma record for three-legged critters.

MEANWHILE THERE ARE THESE FOUR DOGS needing rescue or adoption from the city shelter in Claremore, Okla., birthplace of “The Singin’ Rage, Miss Patti Page” [see tribute in Contemplations] and the town that claims humorist/philosopher Will Rogers who was born on nearby Dog Iron Ranch when Oklahoma was Indian Territory. 
You remember Will Rogers. He said, “I never met a dog I didn’t like.” Wait, sorry. “I never met a man I didn’t like,” is what he said, though, of course, he never met anyone who came to prominence in the 21st Century.
Besides, his best dog quote is this one: “If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die, I want to go where they went.” 
Can I get an “Amen!”?
But back to these dogs in need, who we learned about from our mid-Oklahoma tipster we lovingly ID as Karen Brighterstar. She got this appeal from Jean Hurst, Claremore Animal Control Supervisor. These dogs are urgent, Jean says. Call her at 918-341-1260 to help them or email her at [email protected].
The dogs are Benji who, indeed, looks like the movie dog. “Benji is a great companion dog, but does not like to have other animals around,” Jean reports.

“Loki [the big black dog] is a big active guy that is running out of time.

 “Sunny [the white dog] has tested positive for HW.

“Snoopy [the Beagle mix] is a sweet guy. Needs a home that will give him a good week to relax. He is just scared, and harmless. He was adopted and brought back after 24 hours because all he did was sit there and shake." 



CONTEMPLATIONS: This popped up on the Angie’s Friends Facebook site after the local hero Angie Manriquez began recovering from heart surgery. It’s a relief to see her smiling and hugging that big red heart that coronary patients get to hug! The report on the Angie’s Friends page read, “The woman, the myth, the legend, the Fairy Dogmother of Dallas is doing great! 48 hours in and she's already been on some walks!”  Then, longtime Angie friend and volunteer Beverly Fyfe wrote, “Angie's heart really is this big.” Just to make certain Angie knows that Readlarrypowell.com continues to support her mission while she’s recuperating, here’s a photo of Brock, a 3- to 4-month=old Shepherd mix who is looking for a home. How did he come to be available for adoption? The Fairy Dogmother of Dallas found him on the street! Here’s that Facebook LINK. ...   And, now, a tribute to Miss Patti Page. Enjoy one of her most famous numbers and it’s appropriate for an item about dogs: How Much Is That (CLICK HERE for the answer). ... Found this photo on the Claremont, Okla., Animal Shelter Facebook page. Not funny, really, but there’s a good ending followed by a punchline county music fans will appreciate. The story from Claremont Animal Services is “This poor little baby got stranded on swimming pool tubes. We got him all dried off and he will be on his way to WildHeart Ranch for some TLC.” Then, a reader named Mark Miller, clearly a country fan, wrote, “That's old George Jones.”
