EDITION OF SEPTEMBER 1, 2016 (PetPowellPress) -- Why is this date important? My grandson Connor “Crash” Powell, the boy who belongs to Bixby the Dog, turns 13. My son’s kids are now all teenagers. He is really old and I am not. We’ll get to the birthday boy in Contemplations, but first we have to do something he would want to do: Try to save some animals.
We use that photo of the Dallas Animal Services available adoptable Senisa to grab your attention. The dog, clearly, is performing one of her great bar tricks: tying a cherry stem into a knot with her tongue.
THE LANCASTER MOVEMENT
Our reliable Lancaster Furbabies tipster Tomi Ortiz sent us a heads-up on what she described as the shelter rescuers deciding “to rise and let their voices be heard!”
There’s a movement by Lancaster Furbabies to get hours changed and staff increased and other things changed that will help animals escape a terrible face in the City of Lancaster Animal Shelter. (The addresses they’re pointing their polite requests to belong to the city manager, [email protected] , and the assistant, [email protected].)
and the other email listed below would be to her assistant.
A note on the Furbabies Facebook page reads, “Many of you have voiced concerns over the hours at the Lancaster Texas Animal Shelter. The number one complaint is that the hours make it most difficult to adopt an animal, especially for those that work. Also often times there is simply not enough staff, when the Animal Control Officers are called to the field. Thus, state the city needs to hire more staff. This does DIRECTLY IMPACT whether an animal is adopted or not, as some do not wait or are unable to take off work to adopt. As our goal is to adopt all of the precious and sweet animals, now is your time to complain. Maybe if many do this, the hours will officially be changed. But know many will need to act, not just a few.”
See the Furbabies site HERE.
Those two dogs? They’re in a desperate state and need to get out of the Lancaster shelter. There are pledges for both of them. The shelter (call 972-218-1210) is at 690 E. Main St. in Lancaster. It’s open 8 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Only unemployed people or lotto winners may have the ability to drop by and pick up either Rosco or Hunter or any dog or cat.

TWO FUNDRAISING APPEALS
These two organizations have been working hard all summer to rescue animals. The numbers and the costs mount up.
FIRST, THE SPCA OF TEXAS is in need of money to handle scores of animals that have come in through cruelty seizures. One of the dogs is this girl Gwen. Sad, sad photo, isn’t it.
You may recall that the SPCA rescued 14 dogs from a Kaufman County property and that included 10 adults and four puppies. See how to donate to help pay for the vet bills and day-to-day care at spca.org. And you can see a pretty sweet appeal on behalf of the animals when you click HERE,
THE SMITH COUNTY PETS ALIVE folks have been trying to help the smaller shelters in East Texas cut down on euthanizing animals. How fierce is the problem?
These dedicated rescuers with SC Pets Alive were elated that they could report “only five dogs euthanized at Panola Carthage Pound!” Only five.
Sad, but maybe it’s the beginning of a genuinely euthanize-free autumn.
Marie Garza of SC Pets Alive of SCPA wrote, “We have fostered, transported, tagged and helped [rescue] 28 dogs and cats from high-kill shelters. ....
"We have helped Smith County, Carthage, Tyler and Mineola shelters this month.
"We have several animals that we would like to sponsor this coming week/month that are very short on time due to the Labor Day holiday. We cannot do this without funds.”
Here’s the donation link,To get involved with volunteering and in any other way, email [email protected]. The SC Pets Alive Facebook page is HERE
And that riot of a pre-spoil post came off the Facebook site!
MEANWHILE AT DAS
We’re posting these photos to remind people that Dallas Animal Services, the center of the municipal storm, continues to save animals and promote adoption thanks to help from dedicated staffers and volunteers. Remember, politics aside, we’re all in this to save the animals. It is a noble and wonderful thing for people to do. It raises the humanity level in this goofball town.
As you can see, it’s still puppy season in Dallas. That’s a Mommy and her litter. She’s one of several with the kids in a cage with a lot of puppies and not much hope.
That cat is 5-year-old Billy. He and his set of championship whiskers have been in DAS for 18 days. He’s neutered, loves to play and is a sweet and loving cat.
To offer to help any of these, email [email protected]. Tell your friends, tell your acquaintances. Preach the Gospel of Shelter Critters on downtown sidewalks. but let’s get the job done so the city can save money by not having to buy as much euthanasia “fluid” and needless.
CONTEMPLATIONS: Did you see the story earlier in the week that says a study at
Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest confirmed that dogs understand what we say. Please, allow me to quote the late, great Inky, the Cocker Laureate of the State of Texas, who would frequently looked up at me from the book he was reading and say, “Yeah, I understand you, I just think you’re wrong.” Something he taught to other animals and shared with my AlwaysRightSpouse Martha. ... How about those sweepin' Rangers! ... And, in honor of Connor “Crash” Powell, we wish him Happy Birthday and post these photos of The Boy and His Dog and Some Nuns.
Of the photo of Connor on a Hoverboard with Bixby leading the way, Connor’s dad Bart said, “That appears to be how to walk a dog in 2016.”
Then, of course, that’s Connor and Bixby sharing a moment on the family couch. Finally, a while back we took Connor to see a Pegasus Theatre Living Black & White Production and while he could have had his photo made with the star of the show and its writer, the great Kurt Kleinmann, my grandson chose to be photographed with the Living Black & White Nuns from Death Is a Bad Habit. So, Crash, Happy Birthday and I hope your father enjoys your teenage years as much as I enjoyed his. And a special hello to Crash’s older sisters, first-born Hannah Rose and middle-kid Emily Grace. Bart and Erinn are my heroes. The kids are all smart and mannerly. And they love animals.
