EDITION OF WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 24, 2016 (PetPowellPress) -- Pardon me if these early keystrokes seem sleepy. It’s been difficult to sleep ever since it quit raining in Dallas. Rain, the great slumber aid. And so are a purring cat and a gently snoring dog. OK, here’s the report for the middle of the week. Can you believe August is almost done?
THE PANIC IN FERRIS
And, heck, who can blame the folks who are working with the Ferris Animal Shelter for getting miffed and antsy at the way things are going -- it’s clear there’s trouble in this note forwarded to us by the animal advocate Karen Lee of barkleyworld.com. She got it from Dana Perkins (email [email protected]).
On Tuesday, Dana wrote, “It's been SOOOO quiet at the Ferris Animal Shelter...no visits, no calls, no applications in over 3 weeks... As of yesterday (8/22), our shelter accepted 2 additional pups (not pictured yet) and now our shelter is full and cannot take any other pets in need. We have no other options. We have only 10 kennels and now we have no empty cages. We have paired up as much as we can. We are beyond capacity. We have 9 adults (3 not pictured yet) and 9 puppies and 1 kitty.
“We can't help any other pets, until we help these. Will you please help network our shelter and these little ones?
“Our shelter faces the incredible challenge of our extremely rural location with ZERO walk-ins. Zero. So we rely heavily on networking and sharing to help these sweet little furries. AND, so we can help other little ones in need too! There are so many that need help, and we know times are difficult for lots of shelters and rescues, but we are desperately asking for help from any and all to help us save these precious pets and find their happy tails!
“If you see a little face that tugs at your heart, please don't wait...give our ACO, Chelcee, a call and set up a visit or tag for rescue today! These sweet faces desperately need your help!”

The photos? That dog Nana had 9 puppies. She’s been rescued. The offspring are waiting -- they don’t mind being photographed in little red wagons. That cat, Muffins, is the “1 kitty” in the shelter.
No photos of people in the shelter. Nobody’s doing walk-throughs and posing.
A DISTASTEFUL NOTE
I hate to even bring this up, but the judges in the veterinarian’s bow-and-arrow cat-killing case have recommended license suspension. License termination might make more people happier. You can see the Veterinary News story HERE.
And, from KAGS-TV’s report on the hearing this week, we have a quote from Misty Christo, the lead attorney for Alley Cat Allies which has taken up the cause of Tiger, the victim.
She said, "Alley Cat Allies has stated from the beginning of this case that Kristen Lindsey's veterinary license should be revoked and she should never again care for cats or other animals. Animal owners who may not know about her history have a right to be protected from mistakenly entrusting their own animals into her care."
[LARRY ASIDE: Disgusting case. Disgusting behavior. Horrifying. What thought process had been activated?]

YES! IT’S DARLING MR. BIG EARS!
The email that came from our Houston tipster Alexandra Kelsey had this subject line:
“Darling Mr. Big Ears! Fully vetted, Soon to Be Homeless (Houston, TX_”
Alexandra wrote, “The owners’ parents will pay the pet deposit for their Yorkie, but for whatever reason, they don’t want to pay for this little mixed-breed guy. Cheryl [Lang of No Pets Left Behind] said the owner sincerely wants to keep Banzi, and there is about a week and a half to raise the pet deposit. The dog is Banzi -- a Basenji-Shepherd mix. He’s 8 months old, neutered, chipped and up to date on shots. Also, he’s house-trained, gets along with kids and pets. “Likes to go to the dog park and [take] walks. Banzi’s family is moving and can’t afford the pet deposit of $500 for him, so he needs to be rehomed.”
CONTEMPLATIONS: Are you missing the Olympics? Coming home at any hour and finding Olympic competition on TV? Our cable on-air guide rarely got the program description right. You’d tune in for beach volleyball and find two guys in funny helmets trying to kick the stuffing out of each other. They’ve got two years to get the schedules in order before the games open in PyeongChang. I think that’s in the Davis Mountains in West Texas. Wait, sorry. It’s PyeongChang 2018 is the way the games are being marketed -- they’re going to be hosted in the Taebaek Mountains of Gangwon Province in South Korea -- Pyeongchang County is the actual area. Marketing capped the “C.”. ... Favorite place in West Texas? Santa Fe -- sorry, I was looking at an old map. On the new map, I’m a fan of Alpine. ... I bring up the Winter Olympics so you’ll know that it’s two years until the curling competition.
