EDITION OF Thursday, JUNE 2, 2017 (PetPowellPress) -- We’re opening this edition with a letter from a dog. Normally we don’t print letters purportedly written by a dog. But in this case, it may just be possible that this dog actually did write a letter. He is Sawyer and he is, indeed, a miracle dog. The letter was apparently facilitated by someone with Red Collar Rescue, the Houston outfit that has been taking care of him.
You remember his story -- dumped sicker than a dog (no better way to say it) at a truck stop.
Here’s how the letter reads:
“I hope everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend. I wanted to give you a quick update on my life! Yes ... life’ ... what a great word!
“I have had quite the journey since being rescued on the brink of death on April 9th. Those of you following my story know that with my serious medical condition, my odds of survival at time of rescue were pretty slim. The cruelty that my little body endured was almost too much to bear. I was about to give up, but then along came Red Collar Rescue and all of you wonderful people who so lovingly sent prayers and notes of encouragement and donations for my medical care.
“On May 14, after 37 days in Critical Care, I was finally able to walk out of the hospital and go to a fantastic foster home. I had no idea how wonderful it could be to live in a home with a soft bed to lie in, toys to play with, nutritious food to eat, and lots and lots of love...it is pure bliss! The memories of the past are starting to fade, and I only look forward to great things in my future.
“My colon surgery was a success. Now the plan is for me to gain weight and get a little stronger, and then visit the orthopedic surgeon to see about the best plan for my fractured pelvis and hips.
“I would never have made it this far, if it had not have been for all of your support!
“As you can imagine, my medical bills have been tremendous and are far from finished. Donations can be made [at youcaring] HERE or on our website or by mailing a check to Red Collar Rescue, 945 McKinney Street #424, Houston, TX 77002.
“Till later my friends....
“Lots of Love,
“Sawyer and The RED COLLAR RESCUE team.”
Here are two BEFORE photos followed by a cheer for the foster!
[LARRY ASIDE: We’ve been able to keep up with Sawyer’s Foster Home triumphs because he’s in the care of Kim Desell, a second-generation Dear Reader/Tipster of readlarrypowell.com -- her mom Cathie is “first-generation.” You know how Readlarrypowell.com regards the label “animal nut” as a genuine term of endearment. So you’ll understand it when I say admirably, “In this case, the Animal Nut does not fall far from the family tree!” Isn’t it great to know your kid is carrying on the tradition on behalf of animals!]
COMPETING ADOPTION EVENTS?
LOTS OF ANIMALS MAY WIN!
Wednesday’s Dallas Animal Services Facebook page had this artwork for Adopt-a-Cat Month.
And the DAS page also offered up these three nameless kittens -- siblings -- as adoptable. They’re at the DAS Big Shelter at I-30 and Westmoreland. Ask to see A0992790, A0992794 and A0992797.
Just FYI: These are not the only kittens or cats in the Dallas Animal Services Shelter and Adoption Center. But you probably guessed that already. This is, after all, Dallas, the Most Fertile City in the World.
While that cat special is going on at DAS, just down the street (more like, just down I-30), the SPCA of Texas continues its campaign, “Celebrate 100 Days of Summer." Through September 3, at the SPCA of Texas, “all dog and cat adoptions” are just $25 each.
CONTEMPLATIONS: Some people I know say they’ll now be able to watch the CNN New Year’s Eve Show -- not political, just judgmental about comic timing and content. ... I drove to my hometown of Texarkana, Texas, Wednesday (Mom’s birthday, you may recall). Some idle thoughts: Lots of memories on the ride with me. You don’t work the police beat for the city newspaper without chalking up some memories. Some of you will appreciate this recollection. When I started at the paper, every reporter had some kind of upright manual typewriter: Remington, Underwood, etc. What nobody told a cub reporter until after the fact was “You shouldn’t put your Coke on the right side of your desk right in the path
of the typewriter carriage you’re going to throw vigorously. You can type furiously to the end of the line with both hands, reach up with your left, throw the carriage and send a rocket ship of spewing soda pop drenching the newsroom and everybody in range. Another reason to like computers -- the word processing isn’t as wet. ... Those photos? Mom keeps a wedding book from 1991 next to the TV set -- I have no idea who the guy is but the girl seems to be familiar. And that first photo is looking north down State Line Avenue -- left of that line is Texas and right of it is Arkansas. Hence, State Line Avenue. Runs right smack through the middle of that U.S. Post Office and out the other side. FYI: There’s a street sign at State Line Avenue and College Drive that identifies the road as Stateline Avenue. Must have been contracted to an out-of-towner. Probably from Arkansas -- just kidding the crosstown rivals.
