EDITION OF THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 2017 (PetPowellPress) -- This may be one of the greatest recommendations for a dog that I’ve run across. “She is a great dog outside of the peeing issue, great on walks, loves to cuddle and just lay around like an old dog most of the day, kennel trained...”
Half the women reading this wish their husbands were that good. Here’s today’s report and, yes, you’ll read about that “great dog” -- she needs a home.
NEW DALLAS ANIMAL RULES
Here’s a LINK to NBC5’s story on the new Dallas animal laws. Lots of changes, including mandatory microchips instead of registration.
THE RED OAK CHALLENGE
For those who never drive south of downtown Dallas, there’s a little town called Red Oak on I-35 -- takes just a few minutes to get there. So, apparently you can jump in your car and be there getting a new friend or rescuing some animals within a half-hour if you’ll take any road in the Metrosprawl that isn’t under construction. That narrows it a bit, doesn’t it.
Anyway, Laura Macias, whose mission is to be a magnet attracting attention for small shelters, has pinpointed the crowd of animals needing help at the Red Oak shelter. (To help her, email [email protected] or call or text 214-949-2726. She reports, “This is a great shelter to help. Very clean and some of the cutest dogs and cats you can imagine.” The ACO gets high grades, too, according to Laura.
That cat Ginger? Here’s the story: She might be pregnant. So she’ll need an understanding person.
That great dog Piper? What a face. She’s “possibly: a Berger Picard/Shepherd mix. [LARRY ASIDE: I’ve never seen or heard of a Berger Picard . The breed is named in honor of Jean Luc Picard. I’m kidding. Wish I could make it so.]
THE HUSKY CHALLENGE
Karen Lee, the Barkleyworld.com animal advocate and Euless Trinity GAP Rescue organization, forwarded a note from Roberta Womack, who usually works with Chihuahuas.
She’s trying to find a Husky rescue to take care of this dog -- he’s two and a little too much for smaller kids. Probably going to a pound on Saturday if no one comes forward to help him find a home.
Email [email protected] or call 817-714-0990.
THE MADDY CHALLENGE
This is the dog who got the great reference in our opening paragraph. She is Maddy. And Chris Lynn is trying to find a home for this two-year-old Border Collie-Aussie Shepherd mix.
She’d been rescued by someone who couldn’t keep her because of apartment restrictions.
So Chris and family took her in five months ago. “Outside of our not being able to break her of urinating on carpet/rugs she is a very good and loving dog that listens very well and is very good with our 7- and 8-year-old girls."
The family loves the dog, but all realize they need to find her a place where she can have a better “NEED TO GO” situation. Call 214-551-7051 or email [email protected].
Maddy is healthy and loving. And needs a real break.
Remember the great recommendation: “She is a great dog outside of the peeing issue, great on walks, loves to cuddle and just lay around like an old dog most of the day, kennel trained...”
AN ALLEY CAT IN BURNS FLAT
Terry Lynn Fisher, the resilient animal rescuer in Burns Flat, out in western Oklahoma, is trying to get some help for this cat. She got a message “about this baby being found in an alley way. Her little back paw is BADLY infected and nearly ripped off. My vet is out of town until Monday. He is the only one that lets me charge. Of course the local actual RESCUES said they cannot help.”
She’s hoping to get some help to get this dog into an alternative vet before “the infection can kill her or the paw will fall off.”
Offer to help by emailing Terry Lynn at [email protected].
CONTEMPLATING A CORSICANA CANINE
Alexandra Kelsey, our reliable tipster in Houston, looks far beyond the Bayou City’s big sprawl. This time she has come in contact with an appeal for a dog in Corsicana, on I-45, about an hour from Dallas, and a little longer from Fort Worth.
That’s the dog in question.
AK wrote, “A homeless man in Corsicana died last fall, leaving behind his long-time dog buddy. The dog is an old guy himself, and he just walks up and down the streets, looking for food and I’m sure looking for his person. The shelter there cannot help and Tabitha has a full inn. Is there anyone who might help this handsome old guy? Corsicana is not a town where compassion for strays is part of the culture. He looks like a Newfie mix, perhaps.”
Tabitha is Tabitha Wilkes who issued the appeal for the big ol’ dawg. He’s been wandering the streets for at least 2 1/2 years, she says. Email [email protected] to see about helping the poor, wandering dog.
When AK wrote that “Tabitha has a full inn,” here’s what that means: Tabitha explains, "I do cat rescue and have taken over 240 cats into my home over the past 10 years. Every cat I take in I pick up directly off the street. With the vast number of cats, birds and turtles) in my home I cannot bring a dog in and don't have a secure yard.”
So our contemplation, I guess, is not only the challenge of considering what to do for the ol’ dog, but marveling at Tabitha’s energy for rescuing cats, birds and turtles. You just never consider Corsicana as the Turtle Rescue Capital of Inland Texas. But you do hope that the ol’ street dog gets some help.
