EDITION OF FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 2017 [PetPowellPress] -- Let’s dive right into things. We’re going to get to some mangy Pugs in a second.
FYI: Pugs are not supposed to look like Yoda. Read on.
IS DALLAS DEVELOPING TENDERNESS?
Teresa Gubbins, my former colleague at The Big Paper Downtown who serves on the city’s animal commission, had a pretty nice piece on Culturemap.com headlined “Dallas' animal shelter will finally become its own department.”
And she has this splendidly expressed passage: “Removing shelters out from the code department — home to complaints about spare tires and overgrown grass — also gives subtle acknowledgement to the perspective that pets occupy a role in people's quality of life rather than being viewed as a nuisance.”
[LARRY ASIDE: Dallas with a tender notion? Well, I’ll be darned. Let's see. We're going to test the Dallas tenderness by showing three critters that need a way out. That big dog is A09997784 -- a big ol’ Pittie and what are the chances? Lousy photo, too, but it does demonstrate the dreaded "Big Black Dog Syndrome" -- such dogs tend to become invisible and tough to define in a shelter. Coco is the dog who said, “It’s Dallas -- tether me next to the fan.” Yep, avoid the heat for A0994395. And that majestic cat face -- it belongs to A0994150, i.e., Kitteh. Yep, Kitteh. If you go to dallasanimalservices.org and it’s working (wasn’t up to steam as this was being written) you can see FIVE pages of unwanted Dallas animals. Dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, etc. Come on, neglectful Dallas people, do better, you rat bast...wait, I’m trying to get kinder in the spirit of Dallas. You rather beastly neglectful people. Wasn’t that kinder?]
NEEDLESS TORTURE
Readlarrypowell.com has long been on record as opposing mange as the most needless of animal curses -- some people blame tiny bugs but the reality is neglectful people are to blame for situations likes this.
Having completed our political declaration, we’ll move onto Timothy Reynold’s Thursday PM post from Fort Worth. It was an appeal. You see the photos.
Here’s how the Veteran Pugfan’s post reads: “Guys I need help to take care of these guys. We cannot tell if they are fawn or black. We do know they have Sarcoptic mange and will need lots of treatment. These guys were living in a back yard -- no shelter, no water or food. There was also a poodle which I took as well. She is with K9 Mill Rescue.”
[LARRY ASIDE: We’re pausing here to suggest that someone needs to get a medal ready to give to a police officer. I’m serious.]
Tim continues, “A local police officer spotted these dogs and informed them [the humans] they would either surrender them on the spot or they were going to jail. Bless her for doing that and calling us. Anyway if you can spare any cash to help go to our website www.dfwpugs.com and choose any donate button. Put for pug family with mange. Every dime will go for their care and rehabilitation. Please don't ask about adopting yet as they will have months of treatment. The pugs thank you in advance for helping.” (Keep up with Tim’s work on Facebook HERE.)
THE KINDNESS OF BARKLEYWORLD.COM
Karen Lee’s heart has been dedicated to critters since Hector was a pup (FYI: Old saying for you youngsters).
Here are two stories and three animals that have arrived under her charitable outlook.
See that big fluffy dog? Karen, who reports doing her “due diligence” on the background of this appeal, writes, “Barkleyworld is hoping to raise $1, 500 towards Bear’s eye removal surgery!! Calling on 150 of my closest friends to donate $10 each!’'
This puppy appeared to have a cataract at first, but upon further exams, it turns out to be some pretty hideous glaucoma and the dog’s human, Silvie, needs to raise $3,500 for pre-surgery bills and surgery bills, Karen's note explains.
Karen writes, “I have a copy of the estimate and I also have copies of other vet bills that Sylvie has incurred. As always, thank you for your kindness and generosity in reaching out to help strangers in need of catastrophic vet care.”
And then there are these two cats. Karen says, “I received this plea for help from one of our long time rescuers/networkers, Mary, who has fallen on some really hard times lately. She can no longer afford to take care of all the pets she has and with things changing very rapidly in her life, she is worried about securing a good home for Sam Sam and Garfield.”
To ask about adopting or rescuing these 5-year-old fixed cats, email [email protected].
Mary says she wants the pair -- formerly feral -- to be indoor cats.
HOW ABOUT THIS BEAUTY!
Tami Beck Fowler tagged us to a Facebook post about a dog with an astounding face and fur. [LARRY ASIDE: Oh, who am I kidding. Fur? It’s “dog hair.” Proudly “dog hair.” We’ve got two vacuum cleaners -- it’s DOG HAIR!]
TBF’s tag reads, “I got to meet this girl on Saturday. She's stunning and loving. Her markings are so unusually beautiful. She just wants to please you and love you. Please share her someone you know may be looking for a new family member. She's available for adoption through DFW FurGotten Friends. ...
“Bijou was dumped in a country area and thanks to a former Dallas rescuer she is safe for now. This girl is not only uniquely beautiful but she is smart and super lovey.
"She's around 9 months old and appears to be house-trained. We need to get this girl to a foster in Dallas as soon as possible so she can find her forever home.”
Here’s the adoption LINK.
CONTEMPLATION: Ever look at the Dowdy Ferry Animal Commission Facebook page? Worth a look. Click HERE ... We’re approaching the last weekend of spring. Won’t you hate to see the cool vanish? I didn’t direct that question to anyone sweating between the Red River and the Gulf of Mexico. Do we need to remind people not to leaver critters or kids in the car? Seriously? ... Readlarrypowell.com can’t stop celebrating the triumph of Sawyer, the dog who was “dumped because he was too sick to run away” in Houston. Cathie Desell sent this photo she’d gotten from her daughter who is fostering Sawyer for Red Collar Rescue. Cathie wrote, “Sawyer has gleefully wormed his way onto the sofa next to Kim!” Thanks to Red Collar and some loving fostering, Sawyer is becoming the dog he was meant to be.
