EDITION OF WEDNESDAY, June 14, 2017 (PetPowellPress) That is Annie --- and how about that pose! Nearly regal. Yep, not a free cat, but you can have her for $10 because it’s “Adopt-a-Cat Month” at Dallas Animal Services. Ask about #A0993867 if she’ll agree to see you.
And how about that dog?
And how about that Dallas Animal Services dog! Hypnotic, eh?
That is Batman (A0996024). Eyes of two different colors. Heterochromia. It is easier to explain eyes of two different colors than to explain why this big ol’ dog is called “Batman.” But, it kind of fits and he’s available at DAS -- stop by the big shelter at I-30 and Westmoreland. Bring a few friends and increase the adoption stats!
Monday’s DAS Daily Report Card show HERE shows that the city killed 26 dogs and 33 cats. [LARRY ASIDE: Maybe the new City Council will consider paying attention to finding a way to keep Dallas from being such a fatal stop for dogs and cats. Ought to be some way to get the attention of the uncaring public. Time to get our patent lawyer working overtime on the 2017 Suregrip Swinghard Make a Difference Model of the Readlarrypowell.com Two-by-Four of Enlightenment. Doesn’t it hurt your heart to think about either of those animals being made lifeless because of a city policy and a population afflicted with don’t-care-SOBs. Pardon my entirely appropriate French.]
NO BUSINESS LIKE PUPPY SHOW BUSINESS
We got a note from Pup Squad Animal Rescue in Houston about the joy of fostering animals and it included these photos with the headline “Big Bang Theory Litter -- Temp Foster Needed.”
Ellie is the mom.
The pups are Sheldon, Penny, Amy, Bernie and Leonard. Yep, just like the characters on The Big Bang Theory.
They need a place to stay from June 29 through July 12 -- their regular foster is going on vacation. Read the appeal HERE and see how to help.
THE TWEETIE TALE
This started earlier in the week and kept developing.
We’ve monitored the aftermath on Marina Tarashevska’s local Facebook page. The story begins in Hutchins in East Texas where, according to an early post, Tweetie, suffering from a horrible head wound, wandered up to a home. It was her second visit to the home. She’d apparently had a run in with wild hogs.
And she’d also had puppies.
It seems uncertain that she got this awful wound from a battle with pigs, but you never know. It is Texas and the hogs can be rough.
Tweetie is now under a doc’s care and the pups are being fostered and, as Marina reported, “Tweetie's 5 little sweeties got to visit with their mama and made it just in time for last call at the milk bar. Tweetie was super happy to see the kids and now she can rest peacefully and get some much needed 'me' time for herself. Tweetie is such a good mama and although she is skin and bones her pups are all fed and loved.”
See the video of their meeting HERE

On her page you can see how to donate to the injured animals and how to help in other ways, too.
BIG TEX, ‘OVER THERE’
& AN ARTIST'S WISECRACK
Never mind all the food on a stick at the State Fair of Texas, how about praising the way it’s living up to its theme: CELEBRATING TEXANS. We got a note from the great Karissa Condoianis of the State Fair’s PR department about two fantastic exhibits, both in the Hall of State on the grounds of Fair Park during the great annual event. One has to do with the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I -- holy smoke, a century since the “War To End All Wars.” How can that be?
And the other is close to my ol’ newshound’s heart. It’s an exhibit called “Drawing Power: The Editorial Art of John Knott.” He was a cartoonist at The Big Paper Downtown -- died in 1963 -- I didn’t get there until 1975. But his artwork was still legendary. The Handbook Of Texas has an entry about him HERE and you can see some of his work in a slideshow on the website of The Big Paper Downtown HERE. When he died, his obit included one of his quotes: “Every child at some period of life has the imitative instinct and wants to draw. Some of them grow up and get over it. They become normal people. The others turn into artists.” Got a smile out of me with that one and he didn’t have to lift a pencil.
Just thinking about the State Fair puts me into a good mood. Of course, we still have to get through summer. But you can start your shopping early for posters (that's this year's) and shirts at bigtex.com. Nothing on a stick, however.
CONTEMPLATION: HEAT WAVE
We’ve got summer feelings here in North Texas -- at 6 p.m. the temp was 91 and humidity was 55%. So? At 6 p.m. Dallas time in Denville, N.J., the temp was 80 and humidity was 46%. What does this mean? It means the earth is off its axis, as demonstrated in this photo of Chloe, the cat the runs the Andy and Annie Fisher Household on Indian Lake. Andy explained the pose thusly: “Miss Chloe, coping with the heat wave.” She’s coping better than humans in Dallas.
