EDITION OF MONDAY, JULY 3, 2017 (PetPowellPress) -- We’re going to work on behalf of animals in need today and also have a contemplation about the state of humanity -- it’s inspired by the awful case of a kidnapped child.
THE FOUNDING FATHERS
& DALLAS ANIMALS AT $17.76
Wonder what the Founding Fathers were doing this day in 1776? Well, it was a Wednesday. They may have been relaxing at the Philadelphia Founding Keglers Hall. Relax. That’s a bowling joke. But the pins were falling as America was rising. You can look it up.
I bring this up to note that through July 4, you can adopt dogs and cats from Dallas Animal Services for $17.76. We learned it from the DAS Facebook site.
That’s where we also saw this cute picture of one of the little pups at DAS enjoying some TV while waiting to be moved into a foster home, the shelter’s site reported. A volunteer set this up and, thus, drew some attention for a dog who's going to need a home. [LARRY ASIDE: Anybody else remember how hard it was to get the city to set up a volunteer program at a one time? Things change. Thank heaves. See adoptables at dallasanimalservices.org. Pass it on to people who need dogs and cats. After all, there are dogs and cats who need people! Or else.]
SOME FACES FROM BURNS FLAT
Our determined rescue contact in Burns Flat., Okla., the really tough Terry Lynn Fisher, sent a weekend note about "the faces of the innocent creatures that others just threw away like trash.
" Here’s what she wrote:
“The two females..... They came in skin and bones... The owner said they would come bail them out, but never showed... They are both under a year... very sweet and friendly... Since they went without food, they are guarded when fed.. not really aggressive, just making sure they get their food...
“WHITE FACE... Look at this baby... I love this dog... he is so unique looking... He has been in jail and now boarding for MONTHS... Rescue said if I got him totally vetted, they would take him... THEN THEY BAILED... 3 DIFFERENT TIMES... He needs out asap....
“KITTEN.... This little guy took a ride under the hood of a car. The lady was freaked, thinking she hurt him... We got him out and he was fine... He is very loving and so precious... He needs a safe place...
“LITTLE GUY.... This boy is so adorable... he was scared when he first came in, but now he is a love bug... housebroke and loves to cuddle...
“YELLOW BOY.... This boy was found in the middle of nowhere. the lady was afraid to leave him there so she brought him to town.. he is very well behaved and friendly LOVES KIDS AND ALL ANIMALS....
“LUKE... This one breaks my heart... seriously... I took his entire litter back late last year.. they kept him because they LOVED HIM SO MUCH... this is a family I have taken two Dobies from.. both skeletons and near death... I have taken a pig and chicken from them as well... they never stop...He has now turned 11 months and guess what??? THEY THREW HIM AWAY..... He cries a pitiful cry.. he doesn't understand where his kids are.. where his bed is... he wants out so bad.
“I have others that have places to go... need to get them to New Mexico and Iowa.... Working on raising funds for that.”

A DENTON PROJECT
Debra Myers tipped us to this effort to save the leg of this dog Charles.
Charles is, according to his protectors/advocates, a “Blue Lacy,” regarded as a Texas-bred dog. In fact, in 2005, the Texas Legislature declared the Texas Lacy to be the Offical State Dog Breed of Texas.
And there’s Charles, with a badly broken leg. I Am Dog Rescue and the Denton Animal Support Foundation are trying to collect enough money to pay for the $2,800 surgery that will save Charles’ leg.
A note from IADR Prez Mike Frazier says that about “$1,000 have been pledged or donated already! We’re optimistic that we will reach our goal! However, if perchance we do not raise enough for Charles’ corrective surgery, all funds raised for Charles will be transferred to DASF for his continued care. If you would like to donate, please click the donate button on our facebook page or our website, www.iamdogrescue.org The online donations are processed through PayPal who retains a small part of each contribution. If you prefer to send a check, please mail your contribution to IADR at our Cross Roads mailing address on our website.”
And if you want to take over loving care of Charles the Blue Lacy when he’s adoptable, email [email protected].
AS LONG AS WE’RE TALKING DENTON DOGS, Amy Poskey is working on saving this dog. She reports, “I’ve been networking, begging, and pleading for this precious girl but Bunny is still waiting for a miracle. Since she attacked the neighbor’s cat, she is RESCUE ONLY even though the cat was in Bunny’s yard. Bunny is being kept in the stray hold area so she doesn’t get any foot traffic and she only gets to go out once or twice a day for potty breaks and play time. Bunny is extremely depressed and constantly shakes and drools in her kennel. It’s beyond heartbreaking. However, she perks up and is very outgoing when she gets to go outside and she loves her humans. Bunny has played just fine with a few of the shelter pooches who play as roughly as she does, but she won’t back down if challenged. Therefore, we think she would do best as an only dog unless she can be perfectly matched. She’s too rough for small dogs and no cats for this girl.”
For Bunny’s sake, email [email protected], [email protected], paul.o’[email protected], [email protected], and/or [email protected]. The shelter phone is 940-349-7594. T
MEANWHILE, IN ROWLETT
Dawna Carabajal, our longtime tipster and president of Friends of Rowlett Animals, is looking for at least $150 in pledges to save Alphie.
What’s the story?
“Alphie is just a puppy at 8 mos old and he needs a rescue to save his life! Alphie has a birth defect; a grade 4/6 heart murmur. We had 2 vets verify the murmur and they both recommend he be seen by a Cardiologist. PLEASE HELP! WE MUST FIND ALPHIE A RESCUE! Alphie is not available for adoption due to his diagnosis so the only way he will get out alive is by a rescue group pulling him. PLEASE SHARE! Alphie needs rescue, foster, pledges for rescue!”
Here’s a video of this lively little guy and here’s an email address for the Friends of Rowlett

CONTEMPLATIONS: We see enough cruelty in the animal world. Humans being mean to animals -- it’s nothing new. It’s always upsetting. And, I’m certain 100 percent of the animal people who are upset by these awful things involving animals are depressed and sickened by the death of 13-year-old Shavon Randle, the Lancaster child kidnapped Wednesday. She was found dead Sunday and so was an as yet unidentified man. Why do humans kill children? Why do they kill each other -- whether in bar fights or in ridiculous international disputes? For some reason, the Shavon Randle case is a heartbreaker. Could be her picture. Could be kids I know trying to navigate this world without running into the villains. We don’t know Shavon or her family. But, in a career in journalism that exceeds 50 years, we’ve seen a lot of cruelty from humans. There has to be some way to get people to cherish life. For now, we’ll just pray that some comforting peace finds its way into the hearts of those who are weeping. And may those who are guilty of this affront to humanity face justice. Goodness, how can these things happen?
