EDITION OF WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30, 2017 [PetPowellPress] Anybody who’s been around a while knows that “aftermath” is synonymous with horrible. One of the Merriam-Webster online definitions reads “the period immediately following a usually ruinous event.”
Harvey is a “ruinous event.”
We’ll get to Harvey in a moment but first some animal news from the Metrosprawl.
JR, A GUNSHOT VICTIM
The Dallas Animal Services Facebook page posted this guy’s photo and, based on the cropping at the top of the picture, we’re confident in declaring that he is an Earhound. But that’s not why he’s in the DAS shelter and on the clock.
The story reads, JR (A1004519) was brought to DAS with a gunshot wound in his foot. Our vets treated him, and he's not let it slow him down at all! This handsome guy is playful and loves to give hugs and kisses. He's been here for a while now, and keeps getting overlooked.”
JR, the gunshot victim, is at the DAS’s Mothership Shelter at I-30 and Westmoreland.
Now, if you happen to want a dog named JR who hasn’t been shot, there is this JR, described as “Collie, adult, male, large.” JR is a Descending Earhound, as you can tell by the ears that don’t point up.
Both JRs are at the DAS shelter. Call 214-671-0240, stop by or email [email protected].
HARVEY NOTE: DALLAS
The SPCA of Texas got a boost from TV star Ellen Degeneres. Here’s the VIDEO. And here is the note of gratitude from SPCA of Texas President James Bias: “Thank you Ellen. Your support allows the SPCA of Texas to say yes to the animals of Corpus Christi and to the evacuees from the Gulf Coast.”
The SPCA was getting cats out of Corpus Christi before Harvey had even soaked the coast.
And, fyi, you may think of Ellen Degeneres as one of those Hollywood stars, but she’s got a history with Texas. And Louisiana. She was born in Metairie, just west of New Orleans. And in our Bicentennial Year, 1976, she graduated from Atlanta High School in Atlanta, Texas, just west of the Louisiana border and just south of Texarkana. Yep, she was an Atlanta Rabbit.
DUKE SAVED, DUKE 2, TOO
;
LANCASTER TRIUMPHS
Our pal Tomi Ortiz who first tipped us to the plight of Duke, the long-time Lancaster Animal Shelter resident, was elated Tuesday to tell us that Duke has been claimed.
There’s the photo (right) off the Furbabies of Lancaster Facebook Page.
The report begins with “WAHOO!” and reads that Duke is safe in the hands of Paws of Love Animal Rescue.
But that’s not all. Also posted by the Furbabies was a “Double Wahoo” note involving this same rescue group.
That note reads, “WAHOO!! WAHOO!! PAWS OF LOVE ANIMAL RESCUE HAS ALSO JUST SAVED Duke2, Frank, Princess, Tucker, and Hank. PLEASE PLEASE DONATE TO THIS RESCUE that is saving so many at the Lancaster Texas Animal Shelter by clicking on THIS LINK.
Here are the photos of several of the saved animals, including Duke2, the dog with the great blaze on his chest.
Someone with Furbabies wrote, “So glad that many rescues are saving doggies from Hurricane Harvey..., but PLEASE DON'T IGNORE the doggies in the the local shelters.”
We’re echoing that thought -- any animal out of a shelter makes a space where another animal can be saved.
HARVEY NOTE (OAK CLIFF): Anybody else stunned by the skyrocketing gasoline prices? At some places, they seem to be exceeding the “gouging” level. Feel free to comment on that observation.
FROM OUT AT THE LAKE
These two kittens look innocent. And they probably are. But here’s what their email subject line said: “Kittens need trapping/fostering--Can you help?”
The note came from Sydney Busch of Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake. She’s trying to help Pam Jenkins get some assistance in trapping two rascally youngsters.
[LARRY ASIDE: Anyone who has experience with little feral or near- feral kittens knows it’s a lot easier to photograph ‘em than it is to nab ‘em.]
FYI, these kittens, after being trapped, will need fostering (that’ll come after surgery) and a home. Yes, you may suspect correctly that the Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake Spay/Neuter Clinic, the world’s most successful spay/neuter clinic at Gun Barrel City, Texas, may have a hand in the future of these two kittens.
Get in touch with Pam at [email protected] to help with the trapping.
To help the Friends with their mission, call 903-451-4701. Visit www.friendsoftheanimals.org or write to (i.e., send a “tax-deductible donation”) to P.O. Box 5455, Mabank, Tx., 75147. They’re on Facebook HERE.
PRAYERS & PASSAGES
Our friends, the longtime rescuers Della and David Wallace, have saved many, many animals. When they lose two dogs within days, the shock evolves quickly into “sad.” Read the tribute to Millie and Blue on our Prayers & Passages page by clicking the link in the upper right corner of our homepage.
A HARVEY CONTEMPLATION
The playwright John C. Davenport and his wife Rhona Schwartz are former colleagues of mine at The Big Paper in Downtown Dallas. They now live in Seattle. But Texas is still in their hearts -- especially Houston.
On Facebook Tuesday, John wrote,
“Rhona and I consider Houston our hometown, where we grew up, went to school, got married, had kids, established our careers. We left there for New York in 1989. The worst storm we saw together was Alicia in '83. Our house didn't flood, but no power for five days. That's practically a vacation compared to what Harvey is doing to thousands of people.
“Though we've lived far from the area for years, there's always been that little sense of dread in late summer when they start naming storms in the Gulf of Mexico.
“We knew what that could mean, but Harvey appears to have exceeded everyone's worst fears. The images hit home, literally, as we recognize street signs that now have water lapping at them. That much water that high, covering that large an area -- the adjectives haven't been invented.
“Do what you will to help: donate, pray, volunteer. But Harvey has put our hometown and everything around it at the start of a very long road.”
Readlarrypowell.com just thought Houston would like to know that it has a place in distant hearts.
