EDITION OF FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 2017 (PetPowellPress) -- As we enter the long Labor Day Weekend, we continue to marvel at the Rescue Hearts at work for humans and animals in the Great State of Texas. We also marvel at the hearts involved in determining the price of gasoline at the pump. We like to think there are hearts involved in the pricing, of course. Maybe they'll show up next week.
So, moving along, now and then a longshot works out.
Remember this guy Levi from our previous edition? He’s the fellow who was carried out of a flooded area -- Cinco Ranch (mandatory evacs on Thursday!) at Katy, on the brink of Houston. Remember, his humans “were evacuated in waste deep water carrying Levis with them for three miles.” They were all sate at Pine Mill Ranch in Katy when frightened and disoriented Levi ran to daylight through an open door.”
He was found, our Houston tipster Alexandra Kelsey told us Thursday. The note forwarded from Red Collar Rescue (from which he’d been adopted 7 years ago), read, “He finally was too exhausted to run anymore and let a guy out walking dogs approach him. He was about a mile from where his family is staying. They are overjoyed. Levi is safely in their car and on the way to ER. His pads are raw and he is dehydrated and hungry, but does not seem to be seriously hurt. Please pass on our thanks to everyone for their help in posting his story!”
MEANWHILE IN DALLAS
Lots of dogs that used to live somewhere else have been transported to Dallas -- Harvey changed more than the weather records. But there already were dogs in the Dallas Animal Services Shelter and we’d be remiss if we did not mention that those animals are still available for adoption. You can see the dogs and cats online at dallasanimalservices.org.
There are
three dogs named Bo. Yep. Same spelling, but as you can see, the three Bo’s are not alike. That beautiful white Bo is a “Pittie mix” listed as A1005445; that clearly entertaining and puzzled Chihuahua Bo is A1006161 and the gorgeous Pit Bo is A1006414. We couldn’t find any cats named Bo, but we did find “Boy Cat” (A1006202) and (right) “Girl Cat” (A1006200) on the DAS listings at dallasanimalservices.org.
SOME BEST WISHES
FOR A RESCUE ATTEMPT
We’ve been monitoring Sandra Luhring’s efforts to bring “Buddy” into a safe spot. She’s the director at the Humane Society of Dallas County’s Dog & Kitty City Shelter, but her heart is clearly not devoted exclusively to administrative work!
She’s been socializing this formerly “starving” dog in Dallas for a while now -- you can tell he's wagging his tail in this photo. And when Sandra posted this video of Buddy on her Facebook page, she wrote, “It has taken a long time to get to this point. He won't go near the car and will run off when I try. [The great rescuer] Pat Rodriguez has offered to help trap him. Will try this weekend.”
[LARRY ASIDE: As a veteran of the Dallas rescue community and a guy whose couch is owned by formerly skittish rescued dogs, let me just suggest that we aim some prayers for safety and success toward Sandra, Pat and Buddy this weekend. There ought to be some rescue prayer that doesn’t begin, “Oh, God, don’t let him get away!” or “Oh, God, don’t make me have to crawl under that house to get him.” How about “God bless the rescuers and the animals -- keep them all safe and happy.”]
RENO IN EULESS
Two towns in one headline, but just one cat. (Who’d name a cat Euless? Bound to have happened, of course.) This handsome guy is Reno and we learned about him from Karen Lee, the Barkleyworld.com animal advocate who is also a determined supporter and worker for Euless Trinity GAP Rescue, founded 2012. That’s the non-profit that evolved from the Euless Trinity High School Girl’s Awareness Program -- the GAP Club, founded in 2003.
The high school students and advisors from GAP Rescue work in partnership with the Euless Animal Shelter where Reno is currently #17545.
The big challenge is Reno is FIV positive.
Karen’s note about him reads, “This poor cat came in with a limp and a hair-do I’d never seen the likes before on a cat. But after a little grooming and a trip to the vet, he was cleared for the adoptable side at the Euless shelter. And he was so friendly on Clear the Shelter Day---he won the hearts of a couple early in the day---but since he had not been tested for certain things, the couple took him immediately to a vet where he tested positive for FIV and he was promptly returned. We don’t blame them—we get it---but it was so sad. At the end of the day, ALL of the kennels were empty on the dog AND cat side---well, all but one—Reno’s kennel was occupied. Broke our hearts.”
Additional bio info about Reno reads, “He's had a hard life-- This two year old was hit by a car, but the good news is he should make a full recovery. X-rays show no broken bones, and two vets have agreed he just needs time to heal. Otherwise, he is one big loving baby who adores people and will make a great indoor-only companion.”
The guy just needs a home where people understand the rules -- can’t go outside and spread the virus, can’t live with another uninfected cat, can be an affectionate, happy and comforting companion in an enlightened home. How tough is that? Not very.

That dog? Why that is Merle Dixon, formerly Bobo (# 17626), a handsome Staffie now at Euless after being dumped at the Jacksboro shelter because his family was too busy working. He went from being an indoor fellow with a home to being unwanted without one and on the clock. He’s one of many that GAP and Euless are trying to save. Dogs and cats -- they all deserve a good break for a change.

KEEPING UP WITH HARVEY NEEDS
There are lots of rescues and shelters involved in saving animals from the Harvey Zone. Here’s one with info and photos and a mission. Dallas animal lovers are notorious for helping humans.
CONTEMPLATIONS OF THE THIRD KIND, A BIRTHDAY AND A PIG-NOSED FROG?
Do you still catch the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind on TV now and then? Holy smoke, released in 1977 -- 40 years ago. It occurs to me that many of you may not even have been born when young Richard Dreyfuss was starring in this blockbuster. But, surely you’ve heard of UFOs. Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming has a pivotal role in the film because of, yes, UFOs (on the right, that's from the film, honest) and coming up in mid-September there’s a UFO enthusiasts gathering at Devil’s Tower. Of course, some of you already knew this from your personal contacts. What? With UFOs? Not necessarily. There is the DFW MUFON chapter. It’s not a crime to be curious. Until right now some of you may not even know that there is really a Purple Pig-Nose Frog. Here’s another story with video. Also, you may not know that scientists have discovered 381 new species of plants and animals in the Amazon in the past two years. We’d be pretty arrogant to think that we know about the apparently endless universe when we don’t even know about our own planet. ... Speaking of Purple-Nosed Frogs, my grandson, the incomparable Connor “Crash” Powell, turns 14 today. It would not surprise me to find him exploring space some day. Or maybe inventing something that the world needs. Or playing in a rock band. Multi-talented lad and the baby brother of the fabulous fabs, Hannah Rose and Emily Grace. Bless my son Bart and my daughter-in-law Erinn. Three teenagers in the house and two sane dogs to balance things out. That’s my Granddog Bixby tending to the ginger-haired-at-the-time Connor. One of my favorite photos. I love that dog. Oh, and the kid, too. Happy birthday, Crash! ... Oh, ladies and gentlemen, be sure to wave at Florence as she finishes her drive-by.
