That is Tipper. She’s a dog who deserves the spotlight of “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap” because of her personal experiences and her “volunteer” history!
It was a privilege to hear last week from one of our longtime rescue pals, the great Toni Liguori who, a couple of years ago, retired from Austin to what she describes as “my little piece of dirt in the middle of nowhere.” Right away some of you well say, "Hmm, she must be living in Mississippi!" [LARRY QUICK ASIDE: Relax! I'm kidding Mississippi. Look at that photo! I thought it was my beloved Northeast Texas with all the pines at first, but it is a photo of a recent sunrise at Toni’s place in Summit, Miss., which she describes as “about 90 miles north of Baton Rouge.”]
As the guiding light of Katy’s Promise Rottweiler Rescue in Austin, she’d spent two decades helping animals. Now she’s living where people may not quite understand the heartfelt emotion in the motto “Keep Austin Weird.” But, she declares, “I can survive as long as I still can have The Longhorn Network.”
Clearly, Tipper has made the transition.
And Tipper has a story.
Toni writes, “Back in the spring of 2011, a tiny, 12-week-old pup was found wandering the streets of Garland with a dangling, broken leg. Long story short, this little NOTweiler became a KPRR dog.
“We weren't able to save her leg, but potential adopters were always amazed at her spirit, her beauty, and most of all, her mobility...and then they’d choose a different dog.
“Well, I finally realized Tipper already HAD a home...mine. I think she's settled in, don't you?”
Absolutely.
Toni sent an “upright” photo of this glorious sleeper.
“Here's my gorgeous girl! She doesn't bark, she has a lovely ‘‘Rooooooo’ so at about 75 pounds, my guess is she's a Black and Tan Coonhound/Pit Bull mix.
“I can't tell you how many KPRR puppies she nurtured back in the day. She's the light of my life!
“BTW, big kudos to the Garland shelter for their tenacity and determination in getting her out alive, even to the extent of finding a volunteer to drive her most of the way to Austin for me.”
Is that not a wonderful story of how a Rottie Rescue opened its heart for a “NOTweiler” and the dog turned out to be more than just another project for a rescue group! Tipper has made a difference. Continues to charm, obviously.
And that is why the spotlight of Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap justifiably illuminates the life of a great dog for the long weekend of National Dog Day, August 26.
[REMINDER: Tell us the story of your dogs and cats and send us the photos and inphos, er, info. Email it all to [email protected]. We love telling people about the joy of having a critter who senses human love so wonderfully that he or she can sleep upside-down on a couch or bed. Our long-running feature at readlarrypowell.com, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap, exists to inspire (a) people to share their homes with animals and (b) insomniacs to have faith that they, too, can get some sleep if they can just find the right home, the right position, the right couch, bed, bookshelf, TV table or rug. Insomniacs: Nod off with a dog or cat or dog and cat or two dogs and a couple of cats. Whatever it takes for you to follow their example. Wear a collar, get a microchip, have yourself dipped for ticks -- don’t try to tell me you haven’t wondered if that’ll help you sleep. I’ve been there on the Wide Awake Highway of Life.]
AS WEEKEND ARRIVES,
SOME ANIMALS IN NEED
FROM THE BURNS FLAT REGION OF OKLAHOMA
Terry Lynn Fisher, usually focused on Burns Flat, Okla., sent out a Friday appeal for this guy. Here email subject line read “WATER IS GETTING IN HIS KENNEL: URGENT.”
He’s nowhere near Hurricane Harvey. “This boy is in a pound south of me,” Terry Lynn writes. i have been helping them for over a year now. His outdoor pen is right next to a creek. We’ve had over 5 inches of rain very suddenly and the creek is rising. We need a safe place for him to go. I cannot afford to board another one. I have too many there already with no clue when they will be leaving.”
To help save this guy, email Terry Lynn at [email protected] or call her at 580-330-1459.
THE CURTIS UPDATE
According to a note from people monitoring this guy Curtis, he’s got $765 in pledges that will go with him when a responsible rescue group tags him and pulls him from the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Shelter.
You may recall the 3-year-old, 67-pound Pittie boy was struck by a car and brought into the shelter. According to the monitors, the shelter’s vet amputated his horribly injured leg and now Curtis awaits recovery and care that will make him adoptable. Here’s the email address: [email protected]
CLEO: ‘TERRIFIED IN GARLAND’
Both Patty Turner and Kimberly Jones sent notes about this girl Cleo, currently waiting for help in the Garland Animal Shelter. Patty’s note reads, “She is terrified. She wouldn't move from under her bed. I thought the kennel was empty at first.”
Cleo went “off-hold” Friday. That mean she’s available until her clock runs out. Tag at [email protected]. Garland Animal Services is at 600 Tower St., Garland, 75040.
[LARRY ASIDE: And here, in one edition of Readlarrypowell.com, you have examples of an animal who can sleep comfortably upside-down on the couch and, in contrast, animals at peril because the right loving human has yet to come along. These aren’t animals threatened by a hurricane, they’re threatened by indifference.]
