EDITION OF FRIDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2017 (PetPowellPress) Weekend is arriving. Here’s a question: Would you take your dog to a movie? Probably not. Not sure there’s a service dog category for Movie Date. Unless the service is the dog jumps up and gives a silencing growl people who are either talking back to the film or having a conversation. That’s a GOOD DOG! Now, some real challenges:
AND THE MOOD IS ‘GRRR’
Anytime we get a note that has “Grrr” in the subject line, we know someone has a challenge. This note came to us from Sydney Busch of Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake, the operators of the world’s most successful spay/neuter clinic at Gun Barrel City, Texas. The subject line read “2 small dogs/9 puppies (grrr) need homes NOW!”
The note to Sydney originated with Michelle Ashley of C.L.A.W. (Citizens League for Animal Welfare), based in Van in East Texas. It reads, “This is little runt & her 9 puppies she had w/ Teddy that y'all neutered yesterday [TUESDAY]. Probably the most desperate to get out of that house w/ the amount of fleas that Teddy had!! She is 1 yr & 2 mo old, around 15-20#'s, small breed, supposedly current on vaccines (owner claims to have papers that say so) obviously not spayed.. Not on any heartworm or flea treatment.. also the other small dog they have - PLEASE SOMEONE HELP GET THESE DOGS AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE!!!”
To help, email Michelle at [email protected].
BUT IT’S NOT THE ONLY GRRR IN THE INBOX!
Sydney also sent a note about this dog.
She wrote, “This beautiful very sweet 10-year old (grrr) Yellow Lab needs her last forever home. She's been an outside dog (grrr) and is great with other dogs, cats and kids. She is spayed and is on hw preventative. Owner has moved to FW (seems they don't allow dogs in FW) and dog is now on her own with automatic food/water thing (grrr)...I will be the contact - please call, text or email me.”

THE RED OAK ADORABLES
Holy smoke, how can one small shelter in the splash zone of Big D wind up with so many adorable adoptables. But that is the case, as we have learned from the small shelter mission team of Laura Macias and Leighann Hayden.
Laura, a volunteer animal advocate working as a shelter contact on behalf of the busy Red Oak ACO, can be reached at [email protected] or CALL OR TEXT 214-949-2726. If you’re rescuing, tell her and ask about transport help. If you’re adopting, she’ll help you, too.
That beautiful cat is Daria. Her description reads, “This very, very sweet and loving girl is a kitty princess and she is beautiful and loving and as sweet as a kitty could be. She has long flowing gorgeous fur that is very soft and she absolutely adores being petted and loved and held.”
Then there are these three kittens -- the girls Gianna and Gabrielle on the left and the boy Grayson on the right. They’re on the feral side, but at this age entirely workable.
More dogs? Yes, Buddy is a 10-month-old Aussie Shepherd or Border Collie mix.
[LARRY ASIDE: Be ready to be miffed. His family adopted him when he was a puppy but, son of a gun, he grew up! They dumped him because he got too big. I hope their kids don’t get too big.]
Bear, the Tri-Color Border Collie, or maybe an Aussie, is 7 months old, neutered, house-trained and doesn’t really want to share a home with another dog. He’s food and toy protective. But, heck, people, he’s a WORKING DOG. Give him something to do and love him, too. How hard is that? [LARRY ASIDE: Sorry for my outburst, but today I am impatient with humans.]
Then there is Zach, short for Zachary, a 2- or 3-year-old Pittie mix who is housetrained. Leighann’s bio for this boy reads, “Every now and then, the absolutely BEST dog comes along and this is your boy if you are looking for the best bully dog ever. We are completely serious! HE IS SO SWEET and just the most awesome friendly and lovable guy. We let him play with a female dog that was here and he was fine with sharing his toys with her and loved playing. Zach ADORES playing fetch - he will honestly play ball all day with you if you let him. Cute as cute can be!!!! PLEASE - - BULLY BREED DOGS LIKE THIS JUST DO NOT COME ALONG EVERY DAY ... Friendly, goofy, lovable, cuddly, and CUTE!!!! Even housetrained! And he's past the puppy stage so he's very well behaved and just so lovable. PLS - HELP SAVE HIS LIFE!!”
That, my friends, is an appeal from Leighann based on a human’s heart being touched by a dog’s heart.
Again, these are Laura’s contact points: [email protected] or CALL OR TEXT 214-949-2726.
MEANWHILE IN MESQUITE
Two very different dogs with one real goal: Find a home.
They’re both in the Mesquite Animal Shelter and we learned about them from the animal advocate and volunteer shelter monitor Judi Brown who meets the dogs, then writes about them.
Mango is a maybe 7-year-old Dachshund who was surrendered. Judi writes, “The reason given: She doesn’t get along with other pets. However, she is sharing her kennel with another small dog now without a problem. She also went nose to nose with other small dogs in the bay without a problem. Mango is a sweet, affectionate, friendly little girl that wants on your lap. She’s a social butterfly! She is very alert. She investigated volunteer room thoroughly.. Her nails are too long. Her frame is bony. She only weighs 7 pounds! She needs to be an inside dog that receives lots of love and more groceries. She walks well on a leash. She’s an all-around great dog!” (Her number is 36837693.)
Mopsy, may be about 4, and is a Shih Tzu mix who, Judi says, “came in as a stray.” There’s more to her story. Judy writes, “She is uncomfortable with the shelter noises. Because she is so easily scared, she can be unpredictable. For this reason that Shelter is recommending she only go to a rescue that will give her time to chill out and build trust. Once you spend time with her she is really sweet. She even let me bathe her face. She liked snuggling on my lap. But once she got back into the noisy kennels sudden movements frightened her again.”
Mopsy is #36816551. She weighs 14 pounds, walks well on a leash and “is frisky.”
To ask about these or any dogs in the Mesquite shelter, call 972–216-6283 or email [email protected]. Always include the dog’s number in the subject line.
A BURNS FLAT TRIUMPH
Terry Lynn Fisher, our longtime rescue contact in Burns Flat, way out in the western end of the Sooner State, started her email with a sentiment she gets to use now and then but is always reason to smile. She titled this email:
“WONDERFUL ENDING... A NEW BEGINNING.”
(Check out the momma dog's "Exclamation Eyes!")
Here’s the story: “Earlier this week, I received a message about a very skinny dog hanging out at a house here in town. We searched for the owner, for you could tell the dog was nursing babies. When we found the sister to the owner, I learned this was the sibling to another dog I have been working on. This poor momma was frantic. Her babies were locked in the house (9 days old) while she was left out. Owners were at work, so they were separated all day. I was sickened at how skinny she was.. but the brother to her is just as bad..
“I finally convinced the owners to let me take them. I found a foster so went straight there and took them that night. Saturday, they leave for rescue.
“So many bad stories, I just wanted to share this happy one.”
Now, Terry Lynn does have three in the Burns Flat shelter that need some help. The three are Josie (came in the old broken jaw and the rescues backed out 2 months ago); Rosie whose people tried to dump her in another town and wee rebuffed so, Terry Lynn took her in to save her life; and Pup Pup, less then a year old, a skinny and neglected dog. “Earlier this week, I took his sister and her 8 newborn pups. He is urgent. I do not have room for him at the pound so he is still at the owner’s house.”
To help any of these dogs, email Terry Lynn at [email protected]. Or call her at 580-330-1459.
[LARRY ASIDE: Animal-related idiocy is not limited to the Lone Star State. Creeps and villains can cross state lines without having to apply a bumper sticker that reads DO NOT LET ME HAVE AN ANIMAL.]
CONTEMPLATIONS: Speaking of service dogs, I once sat at play next to a recent military veteran who had a service dog with him -- the dog helped him with anxieties in crowds and dark places and sudden noises. The dog watched the production on stage and I watched the dog -- frequently having to keep myself from reaching down and helping him into my lap out of habit. At our home, dogs watch entertainment from the couches and the recliner. And, I think that, at home, that service dog was a couch dog, too! God bless those service dogs -- they are angels on Earth. ... Anybody else still puzzled about the cereal company that uses Werewolves of London as the music for its commercial -- guy and his daughter fishing on a dock to the sound of Werewolves of London? Can’t figure out the cereal connection. ... For those of you who don’t read poetry, here’s a brief one from the master of short verse, Ogden Nash.
The Dog
The truth I do not stretch or shove
When I state that the dog is full of love.
I’ve also found, by actual test,
A wet dog is the lovingest.
