SECOND EDITION OF FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2017] Here’s our second edition for Friday the 13th and the purpose is to bring good luck and homes to the current residents of the Red Oak and Wilmer animal shelters.
Red Oak is on I-35 south of Dallas by about 10 minutes and Wilmer is south of Dallas on I-45 by about 8 minutes -- if nothing gets in in your way when you wheel off of I-20. And while both cities have small animal shelters, both also have limited foot traffic.
That’s where Laura Macias and Leighann Hayden come in -- they’re publicizing the animals in those shelters in an attempt to get people into the places and animals out. That’s the way it works, you know. A human comes in empty-handed and walks out with a full heart.
Well, except these days, the people walking in are bring animals and leaving them.
Here is the important contract info for both shelters: Call or text Laura at 214-949-2726 or email [email protected]. Laura is the authorized go-between for both shelters because the ACOs in each place are staying busy outside the shelter.
Doesn’t that photo of Willow in Red Oak tell a story -- most of a story. We still need to pin down that happy ending when someone says, “I want that dog.”
THE RED OAK ADORABLE ADOPTABLES
Laura sent a note Thursday evening that explains, “We need to get some dogs out of Red Oak before they fill up again!!! We have not gotten one dog out and it is scary!!!”
These cats are some of the 5 kittens (a boy and his four sisters) -- their coloring has inspired the description “they look like beautiful watercolors.” As you can see, they’re old enough to adopt for a long life in a good home.
There are more dogs in the Red Oak Shelter than we display here, but here are brief descriptions of these:
Willow, maybe 5 months old, is affectionate and cute, Leighanne’s summary reads, “He just so very much wants to be loved. Someone apparently could not care for him and just moved and left him - what is wrong with people?”
Beth is a Pittie mix and “the sweetest little girl you can imagine - everyone adores her. She is cute and sweet and lots of fun. Has the cutest ‘goober’ ear. Silly and a complete love. Loves to give kisses!”
Pittie boy Zachary is 2 or 3 and loves to play. He’s also adept at being a passenger. Leighann wrote, “Look how cute riding in the truck headed to the shelter. Loves everyone and everything!”
CECIL, a 7-month-old Lab/Shepherd mix, was found at the Red Oak Wal-Mart. He wasn’t interested in coming to anyone who called him, so ACO Amy Abernathy had set up a trap and saved him from his own clever behavior. Turns out he’s a sweet guy. And, the bio reads, “He loves Amy and is really coming around and she feels he would be perfect for someone really wanting that young dog that will truly just love you forever and ever - he someone seems to know she saved him and he is SO HOPING for a home ... This is a really special pup.”
THE WILMER ADORABLE ADOPTABLES
Laura had a good note, too. You may recall that week before last we told the story of two pairs of dogs in the Wilmer shelter. One from each pair was rescued quickly, leaving behind these two dogs, Kimmie and Kia. But Laura reports that now “we have gotten both the dogs out. They are leaving this weekend! YAY!”
Let me give you a moment to celebrate those two. One, two, three. Wow, what a coincidence, Wilmer now has three new ones.
“They are small so hoping someone can help! Two black Chihuahuas and one larger dog but only 20 pounds," Laura wrote.
Yep, a girl and a boy: Juliette and Jasper. Leighann's description of Juliette is “looks like a little Chi/Doxie or even a Chi/MinPin mix, and Jasper looks like a Chi/Corgi or Chi/Schipperke mix."
They may be 3 or 4 years old and they were picked up in the same area -- may belong together. But nobody's been looking for them.
And there’s Kensie, a medium-sized Lab/Shepherd mix. Blame the shelter lighting for the photo.
The dog, no matter what the lighting, is a sweet, cute girl who needs a human.
Again, for any of these animal, the contact is Laura. Call or text her at 214-949-2726 or email [email protected].
LARRY REMINDER: Don’t forget to scroll down on www.readlarrypowell.com and read our first edition for Friday the 13th -- it has everything from Kelly Haferkamp’s forwarded tip on this guy Chester who needs a home (his human died!) to a poem from the files of our late companion Inky, The Cocker Laureate of the State of Texas. And, for crying out loud, spread the word about the great animals on the clock in small shelters in North Texas. As we’ve noted before, there are millions of homes around here -- some of them still need dogs and cats.
