EDITION OF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2017 (PetPowellPress) -- I keep hearing all this noise about the Affordable Care Act and while I want medical care to be affordable, circumstances have made me concerned about the Affordable Cat Act. Who is sponsoring that bill? All cats are affordable -- see that cat above with the fantastically artful face! But Is there any way we could establish a minimum wage/maximum benefits for housecats? I’m just asking on behalf of my personal cat, The Senator (right, a veteran danseur in the Ballet of Life). He is always asking for a raise. (He's a wander-up cat -- arrived sans boy equipment, so he was practically free. Has been known to cuddle.)
How about the face on Cali (A1010784)? She’s a genuine Affordable Cat -- they’re running specials on cats and dogs at Dallas Animal Services through the end of the month.
And in case you wonder how likely it is that a cat gets the needle in Dallas, click HERE to see the DAS daily report for Tuesday. Come right back -- we have more animal stories.
A WOOHOO MOMENT FROM AMY POSKEY
From this angle, the subject in that photo is almost unrecognizable.
Pretty alarming photos of a dog. Happens all the time in North Texas. This is Gina, maybe as young as 5 or as old as 8. Definitely emaciated. She came into the Denton McNatt Animal Services Shelter as a starving stray. “She is a very sweet and loving,” our Denton volunteer shelter tipster Amy Poskey wrote. “She seems to be housebroken and has a cataract on one of her eyes.”
Her stray hold would have been up Friday and she would have been a candidate for the needle, but, Amy typed Wednesday, “I AM BEYOND THRILLED TO REPORT THAT GINA HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!!! CANE ROSSO RESCUE IN DALLAS, TX PULLED HER...AGO!!!
"WOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOO AND YEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAWWWWW!!! ; THANK YOU CANE Rosso RESCUE!!!”
Cane Rosso Rescue, the inspiration of the folks at Cane Rosso, the famed pizza place in Deep Ellum, can be reached online at canerossorescue.com if you want to ask about helping with Gina’s bills or adopting this dog.
And, remember: Gina’s not the last dog in Denton.
HOW ABOUT THAT SMILE!!!
This is Betsy, a 2-year-old Retriever mix currently on the clock in the Mesquite Animal Shelter. We learned of her from Judi Brown, the volunteer monitor of shelter situations. She wrote, “I fell in love with her sweet face the first time I saw her. You will too! She is just as sweet and gentle as she looks. She is bashful but warms up quickly. It’s obvious when you spend time with her that she is starving for love. There’s no doubt she will be a loyal, devoted companion. She is obedient and looks to please. Since she is so calm, she would probably do best in a quiet, slower paced household. She walks well on a leash. She appears to be house-trained.”
To ask about this 30-pound dog whose shelter ID is 36656147, call 927-216-6283 or email [email protected]. To tag her, be sure to mention her number in the email subject line and the phone call.
CONTEMPLATIONS:
LOVE, POETRY AND LIFE
I read a story in the British newspaper The Mirror about a 52-year-old chip who was dying and got a visit from the human who had cared for her for years. Maybe I’m a willing believer that animals have souls -- I know they have hearts. I’ve seen it. This is a story about heart and I hope you’ll take time to read it. Click HERE and come back for our Poetry tribute that follows the theme of the day in Contemplations. The great American poet Richard Wilbur, a two-time Pulitzer Prize for Poetry winner, died on October 14. He was 96. And he’d been published for decades. I first saw him in a literature textbook back in junior high or high school. Then along the way, I’d run into his work in The New Yorker. Some of it is long poetry, some of it is short. One, “Because He Swings,” is a perfect fit:
Because he swings so neatly through the trees
An ape feels natural in the word trapeze.
Richard Wilbur, thank you. And now we’ll turn to appropriate mammals for some music. Click HERE, dear animal-lovin’ daydream believers.
