Our adventure for this late October edition of Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap begins in the middle of one recent night.
I realized that our dog Porche was not in her usual place. That is, she was NOT smack in the big middle of the bed shoving two humans out on either side with her sharp elbows and pointy toenails while, inexplicably, still managing to hog the covers.
I mention all that “dogly presence” so you’ll know why I would miss a 44-pound dog who snores.
So I went looking for her -- you never know about a clever dog. Could have locked herself in Martha’s bathroom -- again. Could be at the computer writing her memoirs - but she wasn’t.
I found her on the couch in the darkened living room in the glow of a TV and curled up with The Senator, who, apparently, while in Washington, learned to “work both sides of the aisle.” Yes, as the saying going, "Politics makes strange bedfellows."
Oddly, those are two beings that had not acknowledged each other for years. Maybe a hiss or a growl now and again, but not one sign of acceptance or affection.
A day or so later, I walked into the living room and, there, balanced on the back of the couch were Porche Noel and The Senator, backside to backside. If you didn’t know any better, you’d look at that picture and think, “Odd set of twins.”
Or, if you’ve ever been married, you’d look at that photo and think, “Ah, been married a while.”
