EDITION OF THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2018 (PetPowellPress) -- That is one ultra-cute dog in an ultra-intense pickle -- and we have his story in this edition. His name is Hurley. Keep reading.
Oh, and, astonishingly, we have arrived at Groundhog Day Eve. Is it too early in the 2018 Christmas season to go wassailing? That odd note aside, let’s move on.
SPAY/NEUTER STATISTICS
Whoa. We got a note from the folks with the Spay Neuter Network declaring that 2017 was “our most impactful year ever.”
The list of “impacts” included “fixing” more than 23,500 North Texas animals. The organization’s goal for 2018 is “fix more than 30,000 pets in need.” And the organization needs money to achieve that. Go to spayneuternet.org and click on the “HELP SAVE LIVES” button to donate in several ways.
Other 2017 achievements: Opened a Southern Dallas clinic and “fixed more than 6,500 pets for free”; fixed more than 3,500 feral cats in the Trap-Neuter-Return program (largest provider of feral cat surgeries in North Texas, the organization says) ...The list includes many other things.
[LARRY ASIDE: I mention all this because Dallas is the MOST FERTILE CITY IN THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE. Anybody want to dispute that? ]
RINGWORM CHALLENGE IN DENTON
Well, heck, look at these babies. They are facing a bad fate if someone doesn’t rescue them.
We learned about them, of course, from Amy Poskey, the volunteer who monitors the Denton McNatt Shelter’s challenging situations.
She wrote, “OK, everyone, these two little angels need our help! As you can see, they are PRECIOUS!!!
"Both pups came in on Monday, 1/29, and Grace, the Husky mix, tested positive for ringworm with only ONE LESION on the inside top of her rear leg next to her belly.
"Frankie, the Pibble mix, has no lesions but has been exposed since they have been in the kennel together.
"That being said, Grace and Frankie are RESCUE ONLY.”

SOME HOUSTON STORIES
Oh, how about these tales of animals in an unexpected spot!
We got them from our Houston tipster Alexandra Kelsey.
Of this first pup, she writes, “This dog is adorable. Hurley is blind and you can tell he needs a spa day, but how cute is he?? He needs a rescue ...”
And here is the important information for people who need to help this dog:
Contact [email protected])
The story from BARC is this: “Hurley’s owner died and her daughter surrendered him to us. He is blind, has dermatitis. He walks on a loose leash and responds to name ‘Hurley.’ Walks towards the sound of his name.”
He’s said to be 17, so he’ll need a special rescue that understands a loyal, ol’ dog. Click on that kennel card to make it grow.
THEN THERE’S HEIDI, described as a “shelter fave” at the Bay City Animal Shelter. Our tipster Alexandra writes, “Heidi is HW negative, vetted and well-cared for. If her owner weren’t 84 and frail, Heidi would still be at her home. But, she’s not and the shelter is frantic to find help for her.”
Here are Heidi’s helpers: Nancy Sharp at [email protected]) and, at the Bay City Animal Impound, Mick White at [email protected] or DeLana Blalock at [email protected]
Mick says the dog was adopted 3 years ago, is now 5 and is a great dog that certainly does not deserve to die.” And, she was returned earlier this week “through no fault of her own.” Just needs a good heart to match up with her.
MORE NEWS FROM RED OAK:
THE ANIMALS KEEP ON ARRIVIN’
We’ve made the point for weeks now that the Red Oak Animal Shelter is full and needs help getting animals to safety. On Wednesday, Laura Macias, who has joined with Leighann Hayden to try to help the shelter get human traffic, reports,
“We have FIVE new dogs ... and there are 13 MORE CATS COMING IN SOON!”
To help save the animals, email Laura at [email protected] or CALL OR TEXT 214-949-2726.
THE EBONY STORY
Judi Brown, the volunteer who keeps up with animals in the Mesquite Animal Shelter, sent a note Wednesday that began “I am so sorry to say that Ebony is on the code red list for 9 o’clock Thursday!”
So there’s your sense of urgency for Ebony, the 6-month-old Lab mix who arrived as a stray on the 18th.
Judi writes, “She is absolutely precious but obviously depressed and lays in her kennel not presenting herself well. If she wasn’t so down and out she would get up and people see how beautiful she is.” Outside of the kennel, she is a lively, dear, sweet, entertaining, 40-pound dog. Her ID number is 37639947 -- use it when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected]
CONTEMPLATIONS: We get a lot of newsletters and emails from animal people and animal organizations. There are many stories worth repeating and contemplating -- we do our best. In our Wednesday email we opened the newsletter from our pals at Paws In The City. The headline read “ARCHER, FROM RESCUE TO THERAPY DOG.” The attached prose is a wonderfully sweet history of this dog with the ID badge. I found it a bit inspiring and thought it needed to be shared with as many animal-fans as possible. Here’s how it reads, “Hello Paws In The City, I wanted to send you an update on Archer (formerly Cowboy) as today we are celebrating 6 years with our handsome guy. |
“We've moved all over Texas since adopting him - from Dallas to Austin to Houston over the past 6 years - and Archer has been a champ every step of the way. We estimate him to be around 9 years old and although that is considered old, this guy isn't slowing down.
“He has recently begun volunteering as a therapy dog with Caring Critters, a Houston-based animal assisted therapy group. We are currently volunteering at Texas Children's Hospital and Archer couldn't be more suited to the task -- he gives the best hugs. We want to thank you for saving his life and for your continued dedication to the animals of Dallas. Our family wouldn't be the same without him. Sincerely, Laura, James, Archer and Molly" [LARRY CONTEMPLATION ASIDE: Honestly, doesn’t that make you want to hug Archer the Dog! And that line “Our family wouldn’t be the same without him.” -- That line touches the heart -- Who among us “animal nuts” has not encountered that same emotion with a dog or cat or dogs or cats or dogs and cats. Bless Archer and his family and Paws In The City and all organizations working to give people and animals a wonderful relationship.]
