EDITION OF WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25, 2018 (PetPowellPress) This is a rewrite of the midweek edition. How do we know? Because as near as we can tell, at a critical moment, The Senator, my walk-up cat, padded across the keyboard and the entire original file vanished like Bigfoot into a forest at an Arkansas bachelor party. Nothing I clicked could bring it back. So, here we go again. And pay attention to the look on that puppy’s face.
HOLY SMOKE! CAN TIME MOVE SO FAST?
THE 2018 WINE ON THE ROOF IS #17? WOW!
Yes, the SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL East Lake Pet Orphanage Wine on the Roof fundraiser is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 12 atop ELPO, 10101 E. Northwest Highway.
That animal artwork?
It represents the theme “Wine on the Roof 2018: Pets Just Wanna Have Fun.” There’ll be a Pet Fashion Show, “the Parade of Orphans with fashion inspired by The Blues Brothers, Prince, Cindy Lauper, David Bowie, Boy George, J.R. and Sue Ellen Ewing.”
And there’ll be wines, gourmet food, a raffle and live and online auctions.
ELPO’s guiding light, Dr. Karen Fling, says, ““What began as a backyard gathering has grown into the rooftop event we enjoy today. Proceeds from Wine on the Roof help East Lake Pet Orphanage continue our primary mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and find loving, permanent homes for stray and abandoned dogs, cats, and other animals.”
Tickets are $95 and available online at wineontheroof.com or at East Lake Veterinary Hospital (at the ELPO address) and by calling 214-42-3100.
That second photo? Here’s the caption ELPO sent: “Karen Fling, DVM and president of East Lake Pet Orphanage, Shelia Flores Bustos, working with East Lake since 2002, and her ELPO-adopted dog Jalapeño as Prince – ready for some fun at the 17th Annual Wine on the Roof Event.”
There you have it -- Jalapeño as Prince! Makes me smile! Worth the price of admission!
THE SMALL SHELTER CHALLENGES
ARE AS CONSTANT AS THE BIG SHELTER’S!
Laura Macias and Leighann Hayden continue to beat the drums on behalf of animals in the smaller shelters, particular these two on the southern side of Dallas: Wilmer and Red Oak.
This girl Lindy, a young female Pittie mix is in Red Oak where she’s described as a “medical emergency.” The note about her reads, “Cuddly sweetie pie with a terrible neck injury - apparently she was attacked by another dog. She adores other dogs and all people. Super cute little girl dog that DESPERATELY needs a vet and to be pulled by a foster/rescue or adopter.”
Contact cat_girl_71@yahoo.com or call or text 214-949-2726. Use that info to help the next dog, Jordi, too
Among the many dogs at Wilmer is Jordi, a neutered boy thought to be a Pharaoh Hound. HIs bio reads, “Jordi is the loveliest, sweetest dog! We are guessing Pharaoh Hound or mix based on the ears and markings. Neutered, walks great on a leash, well-behaved, adores everyone, he's the best boy ever.”
THE GARLAND LIST
IS LONG AND SAD
We got a couple of notes about the long, long Garland Animal Services “Urgent List.” There are so many on the list that we don’t have room for them all here. There are more dogs and cats on that list than you’ll want to think about -- it’ll keep you up at night. Karen Lee of Barkleyworld.com managed to summarize and inspire with these paragraphs about specific animals:
“This is such a heartbreaking list. There's a mom kitty whose babies died and she is raising another baby that needed a momma and
they are scheduled to be euth'd ...
“They have a 3-month-old baby puppy marked as fear aggressive ...
“Lots and lots of sweet dogs .... Check out the long ears on Carmella - that is NOT a pit bull mix with those long ears - she's marked incorrectly in all likelihood ...
“If anyone can help ANY of these dogs or this sweet little mom cat and her adoptive baby, please, please, contact ASAP ...
“All inquiries, all replies, and all rescue tags must be sent to the following email account: rescue@garlandtx.gov. “
You see above the Mama cat photo. And that picture of the long ears that Carmella has.
You also see the photo of the “fear-aggressive” puppy known as Bambi. She’s an Aussie Heeler, according to the shelter.
[LARRY ASIDE: Remember that puppy photo in the opening paragraph? Yep, my dog Annie. She's one of those Aussie Heelers. Look how her "mask" matches that of Bambi, the scared little girl in Garland. My dog is the enduring Annie, now 15 years old and a testy, tough ol’ girl. We got her when she was a puppy, born under a neighbor’s shed to the dog Calamity whose photo tops this website everyday. Calamity was a free-roaming
stray. I tried to catch for a couple of years -- she finally gave up when she had the puppies. What I’m saying is this: Bambi deserves a chance. She’ll come around and be a loyal dog. It just take some human love and trust. Respect. You know? Annie has been an interesting companion -- her congeniality has limits these days, but she's earned every warning growl she gives other dogs and cats. And, now and then, a human! I am really praying that Bambi gets a break and becomes someone's longtime companion.]
CONTEMPLATIONS
The Missing; The Leonberger; Being Honest About The Coffee
Maybe you’ve seen this. Two missing French Bulldogs from Dallas. They ran out a front door on April 20 when the wind blew the door open. Channel 33 has done a story outlining all the efforts the humans have made to find their beloved dogs, Mia and Avery-Kate. See it HERE. There’s genuine misery in these situations -- you’d think that someone knows the whereabouts of these two and would get in touch with their humans. If you know someone who suddenly has a really cute pair of French Bulldogs, speak gently to them about doing the right thing. Or, if that fails, call the
police -- they can speak convincingly. This is not a “finder’s keepers, loser’s weepers” situation. .... On Tuesday we mentioned Flutterby, a beautiful Leonberger girl who was in the care of the Humane Society of Central Texas in Waco. Our traditional Houston tipster Alexandra Kelsey sent this upbeat note Tuesday afternoon, “A wonderful couple who adopted one of my foster dogs several years ago sprung this pretty Leonberger mix from the shelter... Miss Dog is at the vet today [Tuesday] getting a check-up.” Here’s a sentence I never thought I’d type: “Hooray for Flutterby the Leonberger.” Not the “hooray” part -- I just never thought I’d type these words together: “Flutterby the Leonberger.” ... Lately I’ve been laying off my usual coffee to try to nudge my blood pressure down. So, here’s a personal question: Is there anyone in the world who can honestly say they enjoy drinking no-caffeine coffee? Seriously.
