EDITION OF WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 2018 [PetPowellPress] I'll explain this handsome dog in just a second. About 2 minutes until 1 p.m. Tuesday, our house was hit by a one-second power failure. Lights went off, the TV shut down, the computer went dark and -- to my personal horror -- the air-conditioner stopped. I had a lot of thoughts in that one second -- didn’t occur to me that the power failure might have been a reaction to a national computer power drain caused by vigorous reactions to Roseanne's unfortunate tweet. [LARRY ASIDE: Did anybody run her through concussion protocols before they let her tweet?]
Fortunately, at our house, everything electric was quickly operating again -- but don’t think I didn’t rush to an A/C vent to make sure it was still “blowing cold.”
I’m writing this while wearing a favorite winter hoodie. Not to jinx our AC.
That dog? Well, just because Roseanne and some folks at ABC might have had a bad day, that doesn’t mean Bruce the Rottweiler (1021243) should have one. He’s available at Dallas Animal Services -- see him online HERE. He’s about 3 and has been at the shelter since May 14. [LARRY ASIDE: We have a Rottie and because of our boy Earl, I’m endorsing Bruce. If he’s only slightly like Earl, he’ll be a great family companion.]
ONE CAT WITH ALLURE
While doing some Tuesday research, I ran across a posting on the Dallas Animal Services Facebook page about this cat Kishan (1029824). When you watch his video, which I hope you’ll do, you’ll think at first that the staffer who's petting him may think she’s the one who is charming the other. But anybody whose been around a cat knows that this 4-year-old guy is not being charmed, he’s doing the charming! He’s set the tone, set the trap and sprung it by pretending to hide in a corner. You can see him at the big city shelter at Westmoreland and I-30. Call the shelter at 214-670-6800. Here’s Kishan’s VIDEO OF AFFECTION.
GREYHOUND PEOPLE STAY BUSY
Whoa. Two things coming up for people who adore Greyhounds and also for people who might want to adopt one of these great dogs.
(1) On June 9 (6 p.m.-10p.m.) Greyhound Adoption League of Texas present its Havana Nights Summer Gala at the Magnolia Terrace in Frisco. Tickets are $75 (click HERE to reserve a spot and see the event’s auction attractions and other features.)
(2) The next day -- yep, early on the 10th -- GALT will be participating in the annual Great Global Greyhound Walk, the annual dog-walking event that, the news release reads, “brings together Greyhounds, lurchers, other sighthounds and their owners to raise awareness of the breeds and show the public just what wonderful pets they make.” Gather at the Botanical Gardens in Grapevine between 9:30 a.m. and 10 a.m.
GALT’s Austin Walkers will be at Lake Pflugerville Park and in Albuquerque, the walkers and the dogs gather at Hyder Park between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. New Mexico time. [LARRY ASIDE: No Greyhound has ever successfully pronounced or spelled Plugerville or Albuquerque.]
Read more about GALT and it’s events and it’s dogs by going to the eNews! HERE. And you can see how many Greyhound Walks there are around the world by going to this site and seeing it’s map.
And, if you need a Greyhound to accompany you to the Walk, you can go to galtx.org and see this beautiful brindle dog and many others who are available. This girl is a retired racing dog, Impala, named after a really swift African antelope, but, relax, Impala's not going to drag you through the botanical gardens -- remember, she's RETIRED.
A FAMILY FIGHT GETS
2 DOGS ON DEATH ROW
We get the story on these sibling Blue Healer/Retriever mixes from Judi Brown, our Mesquite Animal Shelter tipster. They’re both “in bite quarantine,” Judi reports
“Here’s the story,” she writes, “The owners put their food bowls down too close to each other. They got into a fight and when the daughter tried to break it up, she got bit. Since the owners didn’t know which one was the culprit, both were brought in and neither were reclaimed.”
There you have it. Human error.
Hershey(left) is (38507566). Both of these two-year-old dogs are skittish in the shelter situation, Judi says. But they are both also well-mannered and “offer their paws.” Hershey weighs 45 pounds and Domino (38507556) weighs 50 pounds.
The bottom line is that no matter how mannerly they are or how well they get along when they aren’t served improperly or no matter how beautiful they are, they’re still two big dogs on the clock at the Mesquite shelter.

CONTEMPLATIONS
FOODS AND DECLARATIONS
The “PB&J” is interpreted as “peanut butter and jelly” but how many of you’d rather have peanut butter and preserves? Strawberry, for example, or apricot. Maybe even peach. And do you want smooth or crunchy peanut butter. On what kind of bread. At the start of this note, you thought “PB&J” was an easy thing. Decisions, decisions. I like smooth peanut butter on a salt-free cracker with a half-spoon of sugar-free orange marmalade. Mmmmmm. ... As long as we’re on food, anybody reading this ever eat at Gonzalez on Jefferson in Oak Cliff? The warm salsa is great; the “salsa fresca” is magnificent. We're declaring that the best french fries in Dallas can be had at Gonzalez. Hand-sliced, not factory machine-created. ... Speaking of food, in which of these Texas cities is it more difficult to diet: Dallas, Fort Worth or Brenham (home of Blue Bell). I’d add Arlington, but the prices at the ball park and the football field, nobody’s puttin’ on weight but the owners.
