EDITION OF TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2019 [PetPowellPress] We have a collection of animals and appeals for this edition. This, by the way, is our spotlight cat for the day. Clearly, he is a black an white cat with championshp whiskers. That is Michael (41487041) a 3 year-old available at the SPCA of Texas. Readlarrypowell.com endorses black and white cats, along with all other cats in the world. But, as you can tell by Michael's pose, the Black & White variety has an understanding of how to work the camera lens to capture the pink nose and the careful crossing of the paws. Now, please read on about some dogs and people.
MARLEY — THE CLOCK TICKS
Last week’s appeal for Lancaster Animal Shelter’s population has produced this week’s appeal and it reads, “No one is pulling or adopting….” We got the story from the people who are advocating for small shelters. Lancaster is currently working without the net of a reliable, dedicated rescue group, we’ve been told by people previously involved with the shelter.
All that politics aside, the pro-animal advocates say Marley is due to be the first of the crowd of animals to be euthanized. The appeal reads, “His face and sweet sad eyes tell us he knows. It is breaking our hearts. He is the sweetest, best dog. He just so much wants to be loved.”

COULD PUPPUP BE WAITING?
I’m going to gamble on this one. I couldn’t find his photo listed on the Dallas Animal Services website as the 10 p.m. hour approached Monday. Perhaps he has been adopted. His story is a bit unsettling.
The story was forwarded to us by animalfan Karen Lee with barkley- world.com. Read it and you’ll see how it could easily affect anyone with a heart. This note was written by the person who first took in the dog. She explains: “We have given a neighbor’s dog to the Dallas Animal Services following him getting loose. He’s had a tough start to life but is a very sweet boy. We want to adopt him but cannot as we have 2 dogs at home.
“The officer that picked him up today advised I should reach out to every non-kill shelter/rescue before the 20th of this month to attempt to find an alternative space for him for future adoption. We would have fostered him, however, we lost our fence last week due to the wind storm. My young daughter and I have grown close to him and she was devastated when she heard the officer say he would more than likely be euthanized following his 3-day quarantine. I promised her I would find something.”
Marleen, the person who wrote that and is contacting people in an attempt to save him, says, “I believe he is an English Mastiff. They put him in their system as a tricolor Mastiff. He is roughly 2 years old. We have been giving him extra love, food, water and treats, as his previous owners kept him pen in a small yard behind our alleyway without attention since he was a puppy.
“He is at Dallas Animal Services on Westmoreland Road, listed with the nickname we gave him ‘PupPup,’ case number A1072019. It broke our hearts but I have faith we can find him a good home before his clock runs out.”
[LARRY ASIDE: If anyone knows of this dog’s whereabouts, let us know. It could be that he’s simply not on the DAS adoptables list online. Whatever the case, he doesn’t deserve to die just because the damned wind blew down a fence. Pardon my entirely heartfelt and appropriate French.]
BENNY’S WORKING
ON HIS FUTURE
No doubt you remember this guy Benny — Stephen Foster of DFW’s Furgotten Friends got him when he “was a minute from being dead.”
He’d been rescued when a woman saw the harnessed dog tied up in bushes next to a local road. He has his toy rabbit with him. Clearly he was not just lost. He’d been tethered out and abandoned.
He went to Dallas Animal Services. His rabbit was taken from him — could have been necessary if he was aggressive about his toy or if it was too “soiled” to be cleansed. Whatever the case, the only thing he could trust was taken from him.
But DFW’s Furgotten Friends is working on rebuilding this dog’s life and ability to trust.
Stephen posted this message
Monday: “Heading out on Wednesday to pay some more for Benny's training and see his progress. He's also getting a new bunny that Kimberly Jones [noted advocate/rescuer] ordered for him to replace the one he was found with but got tossed at the shelter. That will be a new training toy for him.
“We've raised $1,000 of the $3,000 we need for his full training. I've been covering the shortage but my credit cards are running thin with all the repairs I've needed to make at my own home after the storms and the rescue van that needed a new fuel pump. So today I'm pleading for help with Benny's training fund. Please share and donate to the rescue. Go to our website and click on the donate button: http://dfwfgf.org/."
CONTEMPLATIONS
AN ASSORTMENT FOR TUESDAY
Thanks to Kimberly Jones, our frequent tipster, we learned that this girl Jewel was on the list of due-to-be- euthanized dogs at the Waco Animal Shelter. So we posted her mugshot and a link to save her. We have no idea if what we posted helped this dog find a home, but we are quite happy to post the message we got from KJones: “LOOK WHO GOT ADOPTED!!!” Yep, this great dog Jewel was adopted. On the “Waco’s Urgents” Facebook page, the report from late in the week read, “Grab a tissue. … Number 3 Urgent, Mama Dog Jewel, has left the building and she’s on her way home with her family.” You see the photos. One of the
commenters, Janet Bonanno, wrote, “Prayers answered. Please keep her. No ‘adoption return.’ She needs adjustment time. She’s been to hell and back….Please give this beautiful soul her 4ever loving home. U both will be 4ever blessed.” … Read more about Jewel and see other dogs that need homes on the Facebook site HERE. …
Shelby Bobosky, one of the mainstays of the Texas Humane Legislation Network, cited a quote from Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson’s inaugural speech. He said, “We can attack problems without attacking people. As Mayor, that is exactly what I am asking our city leaders to do, whether we are dealing with each other, city staff, or the public. The challenges facing this city are simply too big for us to act small. So, to the members of our new City Council—my door is open. And so is my mind." … The NBA season is over. The National Hockey season is over. The American tax season is recognized as from January 1 through April 15. Yep, the basketball and hockey seasons last longer than tax season. Got to be some wisecrack there. Maybe there was no season as taxing as the Dallas Mavericks’.
