EXTRA EDITION OF LATE TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2019 [PetPowellPress] An informational aside: Yep, we’re posting a Tuesday news story after we posted the Wednesday report. Why? Because the wrote the Wednesday edition before we got this latest news from the SPCA of Texas:
Karen Froehlich, who has been the interim President/CEO since earlier in the year, has won the job. She is the new President and CEO “effective immediately,” the organization announced Tuesday.
In a news release, the SPCA Board Chair Patricia Villareal was quoted as saying, “Over the past months, it has become increasingly clear that Karen is the right person to lead the SPCA of Texas as we continue in our mission to provide every animal exceptional care an a loving home.”
And President Froehlich said, “The SPCA of Texas has had a great year so far, and the successes continue. I’m excited to lead this organization into the future.”
There are also three new board members: Stephanie Carreon-Elliot, Executive Vice President, McClure Ventures, LLC; Sonja McGill, Attorney; and Mandy Strauss, Partner, RSM US LLP.
The news release also reported that so far this year, the SPCA has “found homes for more than 3,000 pets, has provided spay/neuter surgeries for over 15,000 animals, has rescued more than 1,800 pets from cruelty and so much more.”
[LARRY ASIDE: The SPCA of Texas is “nearly 81” years old, the news release said. readlarrypowell.com is checking, but is it possible that Karen Froehlich is the first FEMALE President/CEO of the SPCA of Texas? I can list her predecessor James Bias and his, Warren Cox, but prior to that distant memory, I’m just not certain and online research yields zip.]
President Froehlich came to the SPCA in 2016 after serving as Director of Grants and Programs at PetSmart Charities. She’s a certified Animal Welfare Administrator.
Rather than run another “business photo” of people in charge of a shelter or serving on the board, Readlarrypowell.com is shamelessly kissing up to the new boss and the board by running photographs of some of the animals that we’re sure management would like to see adopted!
For example, that Earhound is Rusty (42195043), a 44-pound full grown dog who needs some help learning how to behave — he’s only a year old and he’s got a history. He arrived at the SPCA in July, coming from a “hoarding situation” with more than 50 other dogs. Yep, short on socialization. But he’s needing a foster home, the bio says. And, of course, a forever home.
That very sincere cat face belongs to 6-year-old Lila (41474875), a mixed-breed who is spayed and has a tendency to be quiet and, according to a quote in her biography, “I’m happy chillin’ with my human and looking gorgeous.” A volunteer said she has “the prettiest fur I’ve ever seen.”
Oh, one other thing that’ll make the new president happy: I’ll mention that you can donate to the SPCA of Texas at spca.org and, on North Texas Giving Day on Thursday, you can donate to the SPCA of Texas HERE.
