EXTRA EDITION, SATURDAY, MAY 16, 2020 [PetPowellPress] We awoke Saturday morning to the continuing rainstorm over the metroplex, clicked open the inbox and found an email with a bit of a surprising note regarding the City of Mabank on the eastern shore of Cedar Creek Lake.
The city announced a puppy giveaway on its Facebook page HERE. This is from the post on the page:
"*****Free****Come to City Hall and claim a sweet fur baby. Dogs have first round of shots and have been de-wormed."
[SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE: The puppy giveaway notice has been removed from the City of Mabank's Facebook page.]
We got our tip on this from a veteran of animal issues in the Mabank area, Sydney Busch of the Friends of the Animals at Cedar Creek Lake. She wrote, "Instead of having a contract with a local shelter to take animals they pick up, they are doing this...ARE THEY HAVING POTENTIAL ADOPTERS FILL OUT INFO PAPERWORK?
"ARE THEY REQUIRING (THEN FOLLOWING UP!!) TO MAKE SURE THE PUPPIES ARE SPAYED/NEUTERED?"
And Sydney also offered this opinion, an opinion that is shared by many in animal rescue who are experienced observers of the way animals can be treated. Sydney wrote, "we all know who takes FREE puppies/kittens: Dog fighters looking for free bait for their fighting dogs and snake-owners looking for free food for their snakes."
It is time, she closed, "for Mabank to take a little responsibility."
And when you go to the Mabank Facebook page, you'll see that there has been substantial backlash to this Mabank decision.
These photographs are from the Mabank Facebook page. Visit it, read the comments and you'll see that many veterans of animal advocacy are concerned.
