EDITION OF MONDAY, MARCH 14, 2022 [PetPowellPress] While wandering through the unoccupied areas of my mind and they are vast, I discovered on the Holiday Insights online calendar page that today is National Pi Day, celebrating the math concept 3.14. I’m lousy with math but i can promise you that I will gladly celebrate National Pie Day the other 363 or 364 days of the year. Leap Year Pie? The next leap year is 2024. Perhaps I’ll have 2 slices on Feb. 28, 2023. That is my rescuespouse Martha’s dog Wendy. She is a fan of pie. Sunday afternoon I thought, “I’d like some pie” and she must have been reading my mind. Look at those hopeful eyes.
THIS IS AN ONGOING SITUATION:
GLENN HEIGHTS’ DOGS AT PERIL
Small shelter. Full population of dogs. The note from 4-Legged Helpers, the non-profit that monitors small facilities, has, in red ink, this note: “ALL DOGS FROM GLENN HEIGHTS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED **CODE RED - CODE RED!** NEXT IN LINE FOR EUTH…"
This is Troy, apparently, next in line this dreary day in North Texas. What’s the story on Troy?
The Helpers note reads, “TROY, Neutered Male, Cur Mix, AVAILABLE NOW …Sweetest most
wonderful boy you could meet. He is a complete love! Looks like a Teddy Bear with round beautiful button brown eyes. He loves other dogs … Adores all people of all sizes. Walks great on a leash.”
We’ve mentioned this girl before — Precious. Her story is “she is very bashful here and was brought into the shelter by someone who could no longer care for her. Very sweet girl that desperately needs someone.” And the shelter has made her “RESCUE ONLY.”
We don’t know who the kid is but the dog is Cece, a former stray. Likes kids. Likes other dogs. “She is a very pretty girl and extremely sweet dog who follows the ACO around. … Incredibly deserving and would make someone a great dog since she is so loving.
We’ve mentioned this dog with an aura before.
He’s Canelo, a 2-year-old Lab mix who adores people — turned over to the shelter “by someone who could no longer care for him.”

MITCH ‘WAITING PATIENTLY’
TO SHARE HIS PERSONALITY
These volunteer dog biographers at Mesquite Animal Services don’t just do one visit and move on. For example, our pal Judi Brown has sent a following up on Mitch because nobody’s been looking at him. She writes, “Mitch has been waiting patiently for ONE MONTH. He’s a very active boy and he really needs to be out of the kennel. He would well with an active family with a fairly large-sized yard and a secure fence. He’s so happy and playful and loves to play with toys. He entertains himself with them. If you’re willing to spend time loving and playing with this beautiful boy please come to Mesquite Animal Shelter. If you cannot adopt or tag please network Mitch. He wants and needs to be out of the shelter!”
The story is the 1 1/2-year-old Alaskan Husky, Shepherd mix, came in on Jan. 21 as a stray. Judi wrote, “He’s a beautiful boy with striking markings and eyes that look like they’re lined with eye-liner. He is also unique in that he has two bottom canines that stick out at odd angles. These do not appear to bother him, b t rather make him even ‘more unique.’ …
“He went to the gate several times looking out and whimpering. I feel like he was missing his owners. He also spent time standing by the door indicating he wanted to go in. He is very alert.”
To ask about Mitch, use his ID #49454476 when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email [email protected]. See Mitch and more animals in the Mesquite Shelter by clicking HERE.
Among the available adorables is Grace (#49721665), a 10-month old girl with a great coat. She arrived on March 7. And she’s in The Cat Room.
CONTEMPLATIONS
MONDAY, MOVIES & SPORTS
The time change continues to kick my brain around. I was up at 4:50 a.m. Central Standard Time for the 6 a.m. Daylight Saving Time cat and dog feeding. All cats showed up. The dogs were reluctant to join in with the time-change confusion. ….
Another guy I forgot to write a thank-you note to has died. William Hurt, 71, the actor. I first saw him in The Big Chill. So, I recommend that film to anybody born after it hit the BIG screens in Oct. 1983 — if you were born In Oct./Nov./Dec. ’83, you’re old enough to see The Big Chill (39). Mr. Hurt was in so many things — I’ll recommend two: The Accidental Tourist and a wacky but engaging film, A History of Violence directed by David Cronenberg and staring Viggo Mortensen. Oh, and Body Heat — I missed it when it was hot in Aug. 1981 — Kathleen Turner’s first film. Martha got me to watch it year before last on the big screen TV. May big movie screens live forever. And may ticket and concession prices drop responsibly instead of making it look like the concession stands are run by 2022 gasoline companies. …
AND IN SPORTS… Tom Brady ISN’T retiring — no Dallas Cowboys schedule yet, but online sites say the schedule includes a game against Brady and Tampa Bay — I guess if he’s still with Tampa Bay and not somewhere else. Things change swiftly in pro sports: See next note. … Speaking of somewhere else, before the weekend arrived, the Texas Rangers traded starting 3rd baseman Isiah Kiner-Falepa to Minneapolis and before Monday arrived he’d been swapped to the New York Yankees. While this was quick as a cat, some sports things are slow: Dallas getting to a Super Bowl and the Texas Rangers getting to the World Series. Arlington oughta change its motto to “THE CITY WHERE IT’S ALWAYS A REBUILDING YEAR.”
