There is a certain invigorating joy to having a dog as a friend and companion.
There also is a certain amusement when you catch your otherwise lively and cuddly dog out like a light!
Yep, out like a light — that’s how Birdie represents the canine side of our long-running weekend feature, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap.
You see that first sleeping dog photo — we think she’s dreaming of a day at the lake. Maybe listening to Beach Boys songs.
She is the companion of Shane Allison and his wife Mindy. They live in Little Elm on Lake Lewisville.
And that’s Birdie on the wakeboard with Shane. And if you want to see the real action, click on THIS LINK for about a half-minute of a very happy dog.
Shane explains,
“We adopted Birdie from another couple in 2016. She is now 6 years old and was 13 months at adoption. a
“We have two other dogs, Shadow, a retriever, and Chica a long-haired ‘weenier’.”
They add to the happiness of the household without a ride on the board!
[LARRY TIME-OUT: Don’t you wonder how a dog winds up on a wakeboard behind a boat on a Texas lake? Yeah, I asked. Shane fills us in in this next passage.]
This dog does more than hang 20 or so on the board. Shane says, “Birdie speaks, shakes left and right, sits and lays down.
She is very smart but stubborn at the same time.
“When the surfing video was made we lived in a very dog friendly neighborhood and she ran free with a doggy door.
“Everytime we left in the boat she would either cry or chase us down the shore line and swim out to try to catch us.
“Literally all I had to do was call for her while I was in the water, she swam out, I grabbed her/ got up on the board and then set her back down.
“She’s more my dog, but loves my wife Mindy as well.” [LARRY NOTE: Yes, that’s Birdie smooching with Mindy at the Lakeside House of Canine Happiness.]
And, yes, that is Birdie on that ladder just off shore. What's she doing? “Waiting for the boat,” Shane explained.
Yes, and spring arrives at 10:33 a.m. Central Daylight Time on Sunday. Birdie probably senses that it’s not long until the lake is warm enough for boarding! Here’s a virtual hug for a happily wet dog!
[DEAR READERS: Please send photos and bios of your slumbering dogs, cats, etc., to [email protected] and we’ll feature them in our weekend edition of Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap. (That's Birdie smiling during a car ride. Happy dog, you know!) We love showing off your critters! You influence other people to adopt animals as companions for their lives. And you help insomniacs realize they, too, can get some sleep if they can just be strapped to a board and towed behind a high-speed boat or 20 or 30 miles on a comfortable afternoon.]
