EDITION OF TUESDAY, MAY 31, 2022 [PetPowellPress] In celebration of a return to our offices after a holiday, let’s get right into the day’s report.
The wind was relentless in our neighborhood. Just about all weekend. Our bedroom cat, my personal feline Deputy Chief Kittie Leigh Johnson, a relentless observer, frequently positions herself between the curtains and the window and stares at something.
When I went outside to check the tree limbs Monday afternoon, I glanced back at the house and saw this individual handing off the wall at the window! I believe this to be a Texas Spotted Weathervane Lizard — basing that on the fact that it was out in the wind and its tail was demonstrating which way the wind was blowing. BACK INSIDE, I ASKED Kittie Leigh to show me the face the lizard might see through the window and she jumped up on me and glared!
Kittie Leigh only lived “in the wild” for about 5 weeks, then I opened the front door and she walked in from the feral buffet area on the porch and stayed. A little cross-eyed kitten. Never seen a lizard up close and personal — to my knowledge. We haven’t named the lizard. I left a note by the window asking if he — or she — already has a name. I'll let you know.
THREE YOUNGSTERS
ALL READY FOR A HOME
We got the tips on this feline trio from the veteran animal advocate Mary Sullivan who is the contact point for folks who’d like to audition to adopt these darlings.
She writes, “We have three adorable, healthy kitties – all a year old or younger – who need forever homes! Fully-vetted, litterbox-trained, great personalities...wonderful companions.”
The story is Toby and Tux are the 8-month-old bonded brothers who have “lots of kitten engery but when the tumbling and tussling is over, they can’t wait to curl up together. They love to be snuggled by their people, too.”
That brings us to Hunnybunny, maybe year old and, Mary writes, “definitely a lap kitty (she’s only 7 pounds so she’s easy to accommodate). Very affectionate and curious, and such a pretty girl! We believe that she’d enjoy a playmate so if you have a lonely kitty who’d like a pal, please consider this little beauty.”

AS LONG AS WE’RE TALKIN’
ABOUT ANIMALS AND EYES…
This guy is Dexter and we heard about him from the volunteer dog biographers at Mesquite Animal Services. Judi Brown met Dexter and learned all about him.
She writes that he “is a handsome boy with soft brown, tan and black fur and bi-colored eyes. He is a 3-year-old, 76-pound German Shepherd mix that came to Mesquite Animal Shelter on 5/23 as a stray. He is not fixed. He’s friendly and yet not overly so. He’s gentle and very well mannered. He doesn’t jump on you. He even came when I called him!”
And Judi also reports, “He sits for treats and takes them gently. He especially likes to have his ears scratched and wags his tail constantly when you’re doing that. He’s very alert and wanted to know what was going on beyond the gate and yet did not try to escape. He seemed to enjoy the freedom of the yard and romped happily around. When I threw a ball he would chase it but didn’t retrieve it. I bet you could teach him to do that.”
And, there’s this from Judy: “When I took him back to his kennel for some reason he chose that time to give me lots of kisses. He’s such a sweet boy seeking love and has lots of love to give. Since he’s gentle he would probably do well with young children. Since he’s a bigger boy he would do well with a nice-size yard to play in, but yet he told me he would like to spend most of his time curled up inside next to his new loving family.”
When you contact the shelter to ask about Dexter, use his ID #50253700 when you call the shelter at 972-216-6283 or email rescues@city- ofmesquite.com.

And that’s Baby 2 (#49954180), one of a double-armload of lookalike orange month-and-a-half-old kittens. They’re in the cat room. This batch came in on April 12, so they’re probably a little bigger than they are in their photos. [LARRY ASIDE: Cat fans will probably tell you these babies are just about the right size to adopt. Of course, all cats are the right size for cat fans? We cite Milo (#48498400), nearly 4 years old and a ward of the shelter since March 18. You'd think a handsome guy like Milo would have potential adopters lined up waiting to finish the paperwork!]
CONTEMPLATIONS
ASSORTED MUSINGS
Saw a story recently that about the Old Mill Inn, a fixture at Dallas’s Fair Park since the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, i.e., shorthanded as “the 1936 Fair.” The Big Paper Downtown reported that the restaurant is being renovated. Be great if it could be ready for the opening of the 2022 State Fair of Texas on Sept. 23. That’s the colorful State Fair poster announcing the 2022 theme: “TREATS OF TEXAS.” That oughta set off some pre-fair cravings! …
I took three days in a row off for the first time in years. May do it again sometime. So, join me in re-establishing a work pattern. If you’re reading this before 8 a.m., enjoy that coffee.
If you’re reading this after 8 a.m., call your boss and gleefully explain, “I can’t come in today. I’ve got tickets to Top Gun: Maverick.” The boss will understand. …
Thinking point: When’s the last time any of us actually planned to go to a theater and see a blockbuster film? I think it was back when tickets were 5 bucks and a box of popcorn didn’t require filling out loan papers. Theaters — going the way of daily papers?
