Check out the beauty of this napping cat. How’s that for a comfy curl-up and getting some Kitty Zzzzs for a photograph?
That is the oh-so-adorable adorable Mia — she is a “Legacy Napper” for this edition of our weekend feature Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap. And, perhaps more significantly, she is a long-running wonderfully adored “Foster Failure.”
See that second photo? That is the first time we presented Mia as the star of “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap.” It’s a photo of being-fostered Momma MIa with her three kittens in our June 7, 2013 edition. (Keep reading; you may see one of those kittens again.)
So, yep, Patty was fostering them for Mazie’s Mission and Patty is a renowned successful foster, i.e., she socializes and charms the animals and they move on to their next home all sweetened up and ready to love and be loved.
The next time we posted a Mia story was on March 24, 2017. That’s the third photo with headline and caption from "way back then."
We were noting a shocking moment in the Animal Advocacy Universe. Legendary Foster Mom Patty had failed — and she NEVER fails. Ask any of the many people who now have family members whose four paws passed through the Patty and Steve household.
Mia’s Power of Affection was too strong to be ignored.
And, now, here we are in 2022 and Mia is still the cat’s meow.
Patty sent the 2022 pictures during the week and lovingly recalls the Mia story and Mia’s kids, including Jaxx. “I fostered Mia for Mazie’s Mission nine years ago. She was found as a stray with her kittens. She was on stray hold because, per her chip information, someone had adopted her from another shelter. They obviously didn’t follow through with the spay requirement, and voila!”
[LARRY NOTE: In the case of that preceding sentence, “voila” is French for “HOLY SMOKE! NEWBORN KITTENS! HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?” Well, we all know about the birds and bees and cats. Back to Patty’s note.]
Patty wrote, “Luckily for me, they never claimed her or replied to the city’s letters. She was a great mama, and that’s why I named her Mama Mia. The kittens were all adopted, and I keep in touch with one of the adopters [Karel]. She adopted Jaxx, a little tabby boy. Jaxx is living the life now, and I must say, so is Mia.”
You see, of course, the photos of what can happen when you foster a momma cat and her kittens. You wind up snapping pictures, sharing furniture with a cat named Jaxx, building great memories of feline affection! Maybe even contemplating fostering dogs and puppies, cats and kittens and any other species that needs help from someone whose heart is dedicated to giving the critters a decent break in life!
We’re checking to see if Mia teaches an online seminar titled “How To Become A Beloved Foster Failure.” Clearly she knows the way to human hearts.
How wonderful is it to think that an unwanted cat and her three kittens found themselves bunking with the right person with the right connections to get them into homes where they’re adored companions and members of the family. [LARRY ASIDE: Just about every rescue organization in the known universe needs foster help. In honor of Mia her kids, here’s the link to MAZIE’S MISSION There’s a button on the page that you can click to reach the foster program — click on “How To Help.” And fostering is genuinely a helping situation.]
And, by the way, readlarrypowell.com dedicates this edition with Mama Mia and her boy Jaxx to everyone who has ever loved a cat by accident or on purpose.
[DEAR READERS: Please send photos and bios of your slumbering critters to [email protected] and we’ll post ‘em proudly in our long-running weekend feature Let Sleeping Dogs Lie & Napping Cats Nap. You’ll be inspiring other people to open their homes to animals — maybe inspiring some of them to foster AND others to adopt. And you’ll be helping the nation’s insomniacs have faith that they, too, can get some sleep if they can just figure out how to curl up in a circle or determine how many cuddling kittens it takes to put an insomniac out like a light!]
