EDITION OF WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 2022 [PetPowellPress] Has the wind subside? Oh, my. Day after day. Ah, but just 21 days from now — at 4:30 a.m. Texas time, on Tuesday the 21st -- summer will arrive in the Lone Star Sweat, er, State. Make you miss February? Nope.
Welcoming readers to this edition is the former Oak Cliff feral, Stevie Ray Treeboy, a pink-nosed yowling rascal I lifted off the flimsy limb of a mimosa tree when he was about 5 weeks old.
No idea how he got there, but he’s been our companion ever since. In honor of your companions and our’s, we salute June, 2022, and promise on a stack of Old Farmer’s Almanacs that you will not need snow chains in Texas for the next 90 days. Except, maybe, on July 4 — anything can happen on the Fourth of July.
Ask the British.
THE DOGS WHO KEEP
SHOWING UP ONLINE
My theory is nobody reading this is surprised when some dogs just keep showing up on the adoption lists and in heartfelt pleas for rescue. We don’t know why some face a tough fight to get adopted and we sure can’t understand why some are not loved enough to still have a home. We’ve got examples of animals that need a place to go right now.
Maybe, if the needle is quicker than the heart, they will have been sent on already. But, at mid-afternoon on the last day of May, we’re going to try to get some attention for these dogs.
DESPERATE EXAMPLES I
These three dogs have spent more time on the 4-Legged Helpers’ Unwanted List than just about any dogs in recent memory. We’ve posted them before — the little dog Precious now and then for months. The Helpers, as is the case of so many shelter and non-shelter people, just keep trying.
These three — Chad, Ranger and Precious — are described as “extremely urgent” by the 4-Legged Helpers. The are all from areas with either small rarely-visited shelters or no shelters at all. To ask about helping them, call or text 214-949-2726 or email [email protected].
[LARRY ASIDE: Humans got them into this damnable predicament and only the good humans can pull them to safety. Are you a good human? Do you know a good human? Some humans have more cats and dogs than the law allows — risking fines and evictions to help save lives of animals so innocent that they will still love the person who says, “Euthanize this one” and loads the needle. This healthy, loveable dog. Euthanize this one. Isn’t there enough killing on this planet already?]
Chad is about 11 months old, probably as big as he’s going to get. He’s neutered — a bull Terrier/Boxer Mix. The Helpers say, "He is just as sweet as sweet can be and absolutely adores every person and every dog he meets. Cutest thing ever. Very happy — EXTREMELY lovable.”
Ranger is a German shepherd mix who was found as a stray near a gun range and is now in the Ferris Animal Shelter. “At the time this sweet boy was found,” the Helpers report, “he had an injured leg that turned out to be broken. Fortunately, he is now well and is so deserving of a forever home. He does great with other dogs and truly adores people….”
This dog’s predicament may indicate how tough rescue groups and shelters have it right now — too darned many dogs and cats — betrayed by humans — take up all the space in shelters and rescue groups. Why? Because humans have limited problem-solving capabilities and massive problem- creating tendencies and abilities. I’m not kidding. Look around.
The 501c3 rescue that takes in Precious will get a $400 donation. This has been available for weeks — rescues are just too full.
Precious is a young female Bull Terrier mix described as a “little cutie pie.” She’s “great on the leash,” the Helpers report. “Listens well — we had a dog trainer evaluate her and we can fill you in. she truly needs someone. Adores — and we mean ADORES people.”
DESPERATE EXAMPLES II
The opening notes from Fort Worth Animal Care & Control veteran Ginger Leach read, “They just can’t die!!! They are on borrowed time!!!! IMMEDIATE RESCUE NEEDED - I AM BEGGING!!!!!!! I begged for more time so they are living day to day on borrowed time!”
June 1 might be THE DAY. Could be the day they get the needle or the day Cookie (right) and Ginger Elle find homes. Cookie is #48911036 and Ginger Elle is #46184800, according to the appeal we got from Ginger Leach.
As a recent “deadline” approached, Ginger wrote, “It will really suck if these girls die tomorrow… They have been patiently waiting since October 20th and have not gotten cage crazy. They are last call for showing signs of animal aggression.”
These two are at the FWACC Chuck Silcox/South Campus facility, 4900 Martin St., in southeast Fort Worth. Email rescue tags to [email protected].

CONTEMPLATIONS
COMPUTERS AND ANIMALS;
PAPERBACK WRITERS & 1966
We’ll make these contemplations quick. Household computers and the internet are the greatest developments in animal rescue since the telephone. True or false?…
Is it difficult, as June arrives, to think of anything that is cheerful and upbeat? Yes, it is. You may disagree. Wait. The existence of air-conditioning cheers my poor boy's heart -- grew up without it at home and didn't have it at school, either. Went to church several times a week. The church had air-conditioning. Hallelujah and amen. ...
How about a summer song? Oddly, it’s a summer song released in the spring — on May 30, 1966 — a year of great high school classes and musical classics. Click HERE. Yep, Paperback Writer. Things were so simple back then — oh, wait. There was the Vietnam War, the Cold War, "Race Riots" in pursuit of the rights of a citizen, the lack of mandatory seat belts in vehicles (became mandatory in ’68) and Star Trek debuts on NBC. And to show the wide range of American literature, Truman Capote published In Cold Blood and Jacqueline Susann published Valley of the Dolls.
As British writer Samuel Johnson said, “No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money.” That was said on April 5, 1776. Two hundred years later there was all that red, white and blue partying in 1976 —The year of the American Bicentennial.
See how everything fits together?
Sincerely, Your Blockhead.
