EDITION OF WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2, 2022 [PetPowellPress] Here we are, only tip-toe-deep in the month of June and happy to see it. The reality is, of course, that if we’re anywhere near normal, we’re all already into an Alice Cooper “school’s out tor summer” mood. Such a feeling of freedom all those years ago. More on that later. Now, let’s talk critters.
GOOD NEWS FOR TWO DOGS
ON ‘THE LIST’ — A NEW CHANCE!
If you happened to read our June 1 edition, you saw Ginger Leach’s appeal for a couple of dogs who’d
managed to avoid the needle for months, but, suddenly were faced with a June 1 appointment with a bad event. The dogs are Cookie (right) and Ginger Elle.
The folks at Fort Worth Animal Care and Control found a way to invalidate that needle appointment. Ginger’s update explains, “My girls just left with a shelter foster!!! They will get to decompress and will go to the Mega adoption event if not tagged for rescue by then. Thank you to the Holleys for opening their home and hearts to my girls.”
That's a photo of the girls getting ready to move on outta there with their foster.
Cookie is #48911036 and Ginger Elle is #46184800. Those ID numbers can be used with their names when tagging or adopting via the shelter at FWACCtag@fortworthtexas.gov. And you can follow Fort Worth’s Cookie and Ginger Elle and other animals on Ginger’s Facebook page HERE.
That Mega Adoption Event is scheduled June 11-12 at the Carter Exhibits Hall at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth. The event, a joint-effort of the Humane Society of North Texas and the City of Fort Worth, has the goal of placing more than 1,000 dogs, cats and other animals in good homes. The $10 adoption fee includes spaying/neutering, microchips and rabies and “core vaccinations.”
The organizers say pets can’t be “reserved in advance” and are available on a first-come/first-choice system. Ah, but there’s a way to beat the rules. For $50, you can get an Early Bird Fast Pass that lets you into the adoption area early on June 11 (9 a.m.) Here’s a LINK TO THE MEGA ADOPTION. It’ll show you how to register for the special.
MAZIE’S MISSION EXTENDS
FUNDRAISER; SHOWS OFF SOPHIE;
SEEKS FOSTERS; SAVES CATS!!!
That 3-line headline shows a lot of things the great Mazie’s Mission is involved in right now.
There’s the Pampered Chef Virtual Fundraiser HERE, extended through June 6.
And Mazie’s is seeking volunteers who’ll help with events and also transporters who “pick up rescued animals from area shelters and bring them to Mazie’s Mission Rescue Clinic for evaluation and treatment…” You might also have the privilege of bringing animals “from foster homes to adoption events and back home.”
That brings us to Sophie, the dog spotlighted in the Mazie’s email. She’s described as “a 1-year-old , 10-
pound little sweetie who is house/crate trained and gets along with other dogs. She’s low energy and would love to just cuddle on the couch and watch TV with you. She is available for adoption; she will need heart medication but that does not prevent her from being the perfect roommate.” (The adoption application is on the Mazie’s Mission site HERE.
And one more Mazie’s Mission Moment: This clearly is a box of kittens.
[LARRY ASIDE: Don’t see those every day…
Oh, wait.
This is the Dallas/Fort Worth MetroMadnessSprawl and you may actually see a box of unwanted kittens every darned day.]
These are, according to Mazie’s Mission, 33 kittens who were surrendered to Collin County Animal Service by the same person and CCAS reached out for help in saving “these kittens who were sick with upper respiratory illness. Thanks to fosters who stepped up, we got 15 from this pile of kitties. As much as we wanted to take them all, we need fosters so they have a place to go and recover.”
Here’s the LINK to that Mazie’s Mission application to be a foster.
And if you go to the Mazie’s Mission home page, you can read about the organization, its founding and its inspiration — that’s founder, Dr. Erin Shultz’s first shelter dog, Mazie. Love powers lots of animal rescue and advocacy organizations — it’s fuel for the heart.
CONTEMPLATIONS
COPING WITH AC FEARS; SUMMERTIME & SONG
This is the time of the year when you may develop ACS, i.e., air-conditioning sensitivity. Like a week or so ago, when the temp was edging through the 90s. I was typing in my luxurious home office and I heard from a distance a repetitive squeak. A stream of metallic squeaks — the kind you get when your outside A/C unit is about to go vents up. I rose from my aging desk chair, put a hand over the ac vent (still very cool) and stepped into the hall where I realized the sound was coming from the living room. I walked down the hall and turned into the “viewing area” where the big TV was showing the episode of Monk in which the title character is simultaneously solving a murder and serving as an assistant high school basketball coach and won’t quit tweeting his whistle.
You can imagine the relief at finding a TV whistle and not an AC squeak. I hope everyone reading this enjoys that sensation of relief throughout the summer sizzling season. …
Let’s talk summer vacation: Remember when you’d wake up in June and realize you didn’t have to go back to school for about 3 months? You’d feel like a Corvette Stingray with a full tank of 35-cents-a-gallon 1966 East Texas gasoline and a wide open Interstate Highway toward the cooling mountains of New Mexico. Or maybe you’d just think, “I’m going to Six Flags Over Texas.” Of course, tickets were only about $3.50 for adults and under $3 for kids in 1966. Don’t remember what parking cost. But in 2022, the Six Flags online site says “general parking” is “Now only: $35.00/ea.” Ticket prices now involve a complicated selection-of-attractions process and a higher price than I can add up when I use my fingers and take off my socks. I’m going to convince my kids to take me. Maybe. They’re all grown up and I am not.…
So, my fellow graduates of organized education, here’s a great “School’s out” song from 1972. Please click on ALICE COOPER.
